It is an animated science-fiction detective noir about a private investigator, murder, aliens and corruption. The clearest published warnings are regional: the BFI London Film Festival listing gives it a UK BBFC PG certificate and warns of flashing images and graphic violence or injury, while Consumer Protection BC classifies it Parental Guidance because several scenes involve weapons, physical assault and/or injury.
Those classifications are local guidance, not a universal age recommendation. Parents should check the rating where they live and decide whether their child can handle crime-noir themes, weapons, assault, injury imagery and flashing images. More detailed information about language, sexual content, substance use, and the frequency or intensity of violence has not been established in the published sources currently available.

Quick answer for parents
Ray Gunn may be appropriate for some older children who are comfortable with darker animated mysteries, but the available evidence does not support treating it as a young-children’s adventure. Its story is built around a murder investigation in a corrupt future city, and official classification records identify violence-related material. The animation style should not be used as a substitute for checking the rating and warnings.
- UK festival listing: BBFC PG, with warnings for flashing images and scenes of graphic violence or injury.
- British Columbia: Parental Guidance, with a decision summary citing weapons, physical assault and/or injury in several scenes.
- Other content categories: published sources reviewed for this guide do not establish a complete account of language, sexual content, substance use, or detailed violence frequency and intensity.
- Release plan: a limited theatrical release is announced for December 4, 2026, followed by Netflix streaming on December 18, 2026. These are scheduled dates and may change.
Use the classification issued in your own territory first. Then compare the specific warnings with your child’s sensitivities rather than treating “PG” or “Parental Guidance” as a precise age threshold.

What Ray Gunn is about
An animated detective noir
Netflix describes Ray Gunn as Brad Bird’s animated detective noir. The story takes place in Metropia, a giant alternate-future city viewed through the visual language of 1939. Private eye Raymond Gunn becomes involved in a case connected to aliens, murder and the pop star Venus Nova. The city’s Art Deco-inspired surface conceals a darker underworld, giving the film a crime-mystery structure rather than the straightforward quest format associated with many children’s cartoons.
Bird described the intended blend this way: “It was always meant to be a blend of sci-fi and classic detective movies from the ’40s.” That statement explains the genre and period influence; it is not an age recommendation.
Why the premise matters to a child-suitability decision
A detective story involving murder and corruption can create tension even when the characters and setting are stylized. The premise tells parents to expect investigation, danger and a morally complicated city. It does not, by itself, prove how often violence appears or how intensely it is shown, so those details should be taken from the classification warnings rather than guessed from the synopsis.

Runtime and format
The BFI London Film Festival listing gives the film a 119-minute runtime. It is an animated feature, but the format does not determine its intended audience. A nearly two-hour noir mystery may also be demanding for younger viewers who have difficulty following investigations, unfamiliar world-building or a sustained dark mood.

Published classifications and warnings
The two authoritative records currently available use different regional systems. They should be read as separate decisions, not converted into a single worldwide age label.
| Territory and source | Classification | Published content advice | What the record establishes |
|---|---|---|---|
| United Kingdom, BFI London Film Festival listing | BBFC PG | “Contains flashing images.” “Contains scenes of graphic violence or injury.” | The festival listing presents a UK BBFC certificate and these specific warnings. |
| British Columbia, Consumer Protection BC classification dated September 21, 2026 | Parental Guidance | Violence; several scenes depict weapons, physical assault and/or injury. | The provincial decision identifies the cited violence elements and also indicates classification in Manitoba. |
A BBFC PG certificate and a British Columbia Parental Guidance classification are not interchangeable labels. Each belongs to a local system with its own standards and wording. Neither should be presented as a universal minimum age, and neither predicts exactly how another country’s authority will classify the film.
What content is confirmed
Flashing images
The BFI listing specifically warns that the film contains flashing images. That warning is relevant to viewers who are sensitive to rapidly changing light or who have been advised to avoid such visual effects. The listing does not describe the duration, frequency or exact scenes, so parents should not assume that the warning indicates a particular medical risk for their child. If your child has a known photosensitivity concern, seek advice appropriate to that child and consider waiting for more detailed guidance.
Weapons, assault and injury
Consumer Protection BC’s decision summary says that several scenes depict weapons, physical assault and/or injury. The BFI listing separately uses the phrase “graphic violence or injury.” Together, these records establish that violence-related imagery is a material part of the classification decision. They do not provide a scene-by-scene account, a body-count estimate, a list of weapons, or a measure of how long each sequence lasts.

Crime, murder and corruption
The official premise identifies murder and corruption as central story elements. Even where the screen depiction is not described in detail, those subjects can affect children who are unsettled by crime narratives, threatened characters or bleak social settings. The film’s noir identity also suggests a more shadowed atmosphere than a conventional light comedy, although the available sources do not assign a formal “scary” or “disturbing” warning.
What has not been established
Parents often need information beyond the headline rating. The currently published records do not provide a comprehensive guide for the following categories:
- Language: no verified scene-by-scene or category-specific description is available in the reviewed records.
- Sexual content or romance: the available classification summaries do not establish what is shown or discussed.
- Substance use: no verified description is supplied.
- Violence intensity and frequency: weapons, assault, injury and graphic violence or injury are confirmed as warning subjects, but the sources do not quantify how often they occur or describe every depiction.
- Other frightening material: the published records do not provide a complete list of creatures, shocks, threats or emotionally difficult scenes.
“Not established” does not mean “absent.” It means a parent should not claim that a category is harmless or missing based only on the short classification wording.

- Find the local classification. Check the rating displayed by the cinema, local classification authority or streaming service in your country. Do not substitute the UK festival listing or British Columbia record for your own territory’s decision.
- Read the accompanying warning. Look specifically for references to flashing images, violence, weapons, assault or injury. A label without its explanatory warning leaves out the information most relevant to this film.
- Match the warnings to your child. Consider previous reactions to animated peril, realistic injury, crime stories, sudden flashes and scenes in which characters are attacked. A child who is comfortable with fantasy battles may still find a murder investigation or noir atmosphere upsetting.
- Consider the story structure. The film follows a private investigator through aliens, murder and corruption. Ask whether your child can follow a mystery and tolerate uncertainty rather than assuming that animation makes the story simple.
- Choose the viewing setting. If you are uncertain, watch with your child rather than sending them alone. A shared viewing lets you pause, explain a confusing plot point or stop if the material is distressing.
- Plan for the runtime. At 119 minutes, the feature requires sustained attention. A tired or very young viewer may struggle with the length even if the content itself is manageable.
- Recheck closer to release. The film had not yet reached its announced release dates when these records were reviewed. Classification advice can be supplemented or revised, so check the final local listing before booking or pressing play.
Questions to ask about your child’s sensitivities
How does your child react to injury imagery?
The strongest content signal is violence involving weapons, assault and injury, with the UK listing using the additional term “graphic.” If your child becomes distressed by visible injuries, attacks or implied harm, this is the issue to prioritize. The available records do not tell parents whether the most intense moments are brief, repeated or concentrated near the climax.
Are flashing visuals a concern?
The UK listing carries a flashing-images warning. Families who already manage photosensitivity or who avoid flashing effects should treat that notice as relevant and obtain more specific information before viewing.
Does your child find crime themes upsetting?
Murder and corruption are part of the premise, and the protagonist is a private eye working in a city with a criminal underworld. Some children may be more affected by the idea of a crime, investigation or compromised society than by the animation style itself.

Can your child handle ambiguity?
Noir mysteries often reveal information gradually and may involve suspicious characters, hidden motives and morally uncertain choices. The available descriptions establish the detective-noir format but do not offer a complete plot synopsis. If your child prefers clear heroes, simple goals and immediate explanations, the format may require more support.

How the regional ratings should be used
UK: BBFC PG on the festival listing
The BFI London Film Festival listing is useful evidence for the UK presentation of the film: it records a BBFC PG certificate, a 119-minute runtime and the two warnings about flashing images and graphic violence or injury. It is a festival listing, so parents should still check the final cinema or streaming information available for the screening they plan to use.
British Columbia: Parental Guidance
Consumer Protection BC’s classification record, dated September 21, 2026, gives the film a Parental Guidance classification and explains that several scenes depict weapons, physical assault and/or injury. The record also indicates classification in Manitoba. This is a provincial classification decision, not a worldwide rating and not a statement that every child above a particular age will be comfortable.
Why a direct ranking would mislead
It would be inaccurate to say that one of these labels is “stricter” or “safer” for children without comparing the underlying standards and the final local cuts. The useful comparison is the warning language: both records point parents toward violence-related material, while the UK listing additionally calls out flashing images.
Release timing and where families may watch
Netflix announced a limited theatrical release beginning December 4, 2026, with streaming on Netflix on December 18, 2026. These are announced schedule dates rather than a guarantee that every country will receive the same theatrical availability or that the dates cannot change. Local cinema listings and the Netflix title page should be checked for the final release information in your region.
The streaming destination is useful for families who prefer to watch at home, because a parent can control the timing and stop the film if needed. It does not remove the need to review the local content label or account for the warnings already published.
Common mistakes parents should avoid
- Assuming animation means preschool content. Ray Gunn’s official description places it in detective noir, with murder, aliens and corruption.
- Treating PG as a universal age number. The BBFC certificate belongs to the UK listing; British Columbia uses its own Parental Guidance system.
- Calling unlisted categories absent. The available records do not verify language, sexual content, substance use or a complete violence breakdown.
- Estimating intensity from the trailer or artwork. Promotional material cannot replace a classification authority’s warning, and it cannot establish what happens in every scene.
- Ignoring flashing images because the film is animated. The UK listing names flashing images specifically.
- Assuming the release schedule is final everywhere. December 4 and December 18, 2026 are announced dates that may change by market or over time.
A practical family viewing plan
Before viewing
- Locate the classification and warning on the local cinema or streaming listing.
- Explain to your child that the film is a mystery involving a private investigator, danger and a criminal underworld.
- Decide whether flashing images, weapons, assault or injury are likely to be upsetting.
- Choose a time when an adult can watch and respond to questions.
During viewing
- Watch for signs of distress such as covering the eyes, repeated requests to stop, agitation or withdrawal.
- Pause if your child needs an explanation of the investigation or a break from a violent sequence.
- Do not insist that a child finish a film simply because the local classification permits it.
After viewing
- Ask which scenes felt frightening or confusing without suggesting that a particular reaction is expected.
- Clarify the difference between a fictional animated setting and real-world violence.
- If the film caused persistent distress, avoid using the rating as evidence that the child should watch similar material immediately.
Bottom line for parents
Ray Gunn is best approached as an animated noir mystery, not as an automatically child-directed cartoon. The verified UK listing warns of flashing images and graphic violence or injury, and the British Columbia record cites weapons, physical assault and/or injury in several scenes. Check the classification in your own territory, consider your child’s response to those specific elements and the film’s murder-and-corruption premise, and watch together if you are unsure. Because detailed guidance for several other content categories is not yet available, leave room for the final local classification and any later official advisories.
