How to Troubleshoot ReSkate Connection and Launch Problems on Steam Deck

Separate Steam Deck, build-mismatch, network, and Proton multiplayer problems with a practical ReSkate troubleshooting flow.

Start by identifying where the failure occurs: the ReSkate launcher, the game after you press PLAY, Steam connectivity, or a multiplayer action such as hosting. Then check SteamOS and Proton, confirm that ReSkate supports your installed skate. build, and test your network. These checks separate ordinary Deck or Wi-Fi trouble from a reported Linux/Proton lobby-hosting limitation.

Identify what is failing

Before changing settings, note the exact point where the problem starts. A launcher that will not open, a game that fails after PLAY, and a lobby that will not host can have different causes.

  • Launcher: Does ReSkateLauncher.exe open, update, and reach its main screen?
  • Game launch: Does the launcher start the game, or does the failure occur after you press PLAY?
  • Steam connection: Can Steam sign in and connect to its services, apart from ReSkate?
  • Multiplayer: Can you join a lobby, host one, or neither? Record the full error text, including “Multiplayer is off” if it appears.

For a useful support report, record whether your Deck is LCD or OLED, SteamOS version, selected Proton tool, ReSkate version, game build, and which multiplayer actions work. These details help distinguish a Deck-wide issue from one particular launch or lobby behavior.

Apply Steam Deck and Proton checks

Valve’s general first steps for Steam Deck software instability are to install available system updates, restart, and retest with third-party applications installed through Desktop Mode exited or disabled. See Valve’s Steam Deck troubleshooting guidance.

  1. Install any available SteamOS update, then restart the Deck.
  2. Exit third-party applications installed through Desktop Mode, or disable them temporarily, and retry ReSkate.
  3. If you are launching a Steam app, check its Deck compatibility status. Where appropriate, try the latest Proton compatibility tool from the app’s Properties > Compatibility menu; labels can change between Steam versions. Valve describes the compatibility options as Verified, Playable, Unsupported, and Unknown. Verified means the game works well out of the box; Playable may need user adjustments; Unsupported is currently not functional on Deck; Unknown means it has not been checked. The criteria include input, display, seamlessness, and system support, including Proton and middleware. See Valve’s Steam Deck compatibility program.

Do not assume ReSkate has a particular compatibility rating: the rating was not established here. ReSkate is a fan project, not affiliated with or endorsed by Electronic Arts or Full Circle, and its README says users need their own Steam copy of skate. See the official ReSkate project README.

Check ReSkate’s installation and supported game build

A game-build mismatch is separate from Wi-Fi or Deck hardware trouble. ReSkate’s launcher checks the game files against the project’s supported build. The README currently names Steam build 25414733; because that value can change as the project and game update, check the current README or release notes rather than treating it as permanent.

Confirm the launcher files and game

The project README instructs users to extract ReSkateLauncher.exe and ReSkate.dll beside Skate.exe, or into an empty folder where the launcher can install the game. Open the launcher and press PLAY. If the game is missing or Steam has advanced it beyond the supported build, the launcher may ask you to sign in to Steam and download the required files. Use the current official release and follow the project’s setup instructions.

Preserve the log if the problem continues

The README lists the session log as logs/ReSkate.log beside Skate.exe. Keep relevant log details with your support report. That documented location is not a verified SteamOS/Proton path, so do not assume it appears in a particular Linux directory.

Test general network connectivity

If Steam itself has trouble connecting, or multiplayer failures vary with your connection, isolate the network before attributing the problem to ReSkate. Steam Support recommends trying another available Wi-Fi frequency, checking Steam server status, and considering local wireless or powerline interference. Its network connection troubleshooting guide also recommends a direct wired test to separate Wi-Fi problems from other connection issues.

  • Try another available Wi-Fi band, if your router and Deck offer one.
  • Check Steam server status before troubleshooting your local network.
  • Consider whether distance, walls, other wireless devices, or powerline networking could be affecting the connection.
  • If practical, test with a direct Ethernet connection. A Steam Deck needs additional USB-C-to-Ethernet hardware for this diagnostic. A wired test can help isolate Wi-Fi trouble; it is not a documented ReSkate fix.
  • An internet speed test can help assess local link quality, but a good result does not establish that ReSkate’s launcher or multiplayer code is working correctly.

Understand the reported Linux/Proton hosting issue

A ReSkate issue opened on October 4, 2026, titled “Cannot host lobby on Linux/Proton – ‘Multiplayer is off’ persists”, describes one environment in which hosting fails while joining reportedly works. The issue author reports Linux Mint, native Linux Steam, Proton Experimental, ReSkate launched as a non-Steam game through Proton, and ReSkate versions 1.0.6/1.0.7. The report attributes the failure to Steam P2P listen-socket creation failing on Proton and says no workaround was available at the time of the report.

This is an open user issue report, not a confirmed project-wide diagnosis or proof that every Steam Deck setup is affected. If your symptom matches—especially if joining works but hosting does not—check the issue for updates and report your versions and relevant logs through the project’s official channels. Repeated router changes or a USB-C Ethernet adapter are not established fixes for this reported hosting behavior.

Choose the next step by symptom

What happens What to check next
Launcher will not open or update Install SteamOS updates, restart, exit Desktop Mode third-party apps, then verify the launcher files and current project instructions.
Launcher opens, but game launch fails Confirm the files are placed as the README specifies and check whether the installed Steam build matches ReSkate’s currently supported build.
Steam or other online services also fail Check Steam server status, try another available Wi-Fi band, and test local interference; use Ethernet only as a way to isolate the wireless link.
Joining works but hosting shows “Multiplayer is off” Compare your setup with the reported Linux/Proton issue and share versions and logs with the project; no confirmed workaround is established in that report.
