If Skyrim DLC will not download or does not appear on your PS5, do not reinstall the game first. Identify the exact content and edition, confirm that the PlayStation account that made the purchase owns it, inspect the download queue, restore licenses, and install the latest Skyrim update. Only then consider reinstalling—and only for the Creations and Anniversary Edition situations Bethesda specifically documents.
The correct fix depends on what you see: a download that never starts, a missing in-game add-on, a purchase prompt or padlock, or a freeze at “Checking for add-ons.” The sequence below separates those symptoms without risking unnecessary deletion.

1. Identify what you are trying to install
“Skyrim DLC” can mean an official add-on, the Anniversary Upgrade, the complete Anniversary Edition, or a user-selected item from the in-game Creations menu. These are not delivered or diagnosed in exactly the same way.

If you bought an Anniversary Upgrade rather than a bundle, treat that purchase as the entitlement you must verify. Bethesda also documents the next-generation game upgrade as free on its support page, so owning the eligible game and owning Anniversary content are separate questions; a free PS5 upgrade does not by itself prove that the Anniversary add-ons are licensed.
Do not assume that seeing “PS5” on the game tile identifies the exact package you own. Compare the product name in your library and transaction history with the Store listing in your country. A Special Edition purchase, a separate Anniversary Upgrade and an Anniversary Edition bundle can present different entitlement records even though they launch the same Skyrim title.
Creations are a separate content type
Creations are downloaded from Skyrim Special Edition’s in-game Creations menu, not necessarily as a separate PlayStation Store add-on. If only one Creation is absent, troubleshoot it inside that menu. If the whole game hangs after you activated many Creations, follow the specific reinstall procedure in the Creations section below.

The visible symptom is evidence, not a diagnosis by itself. For example, a prompt to buy Anniversary content can mean that the current profile lacks the purchase even when another profile owns it. A queue entry can show that the console accepted a download request without proving that the Store service, storage or license records are working. Follow the branch that matches the evidence, then reassess after each step.
3. Verify the purchasing account and transaction
PlayStation’s download guidance starts with ownership. Sign in on the PS5 with the account that bought the game or add-on, then check that account’s transaction history and confirm the purchase completed. Do this before repeatedly selecting Download; a redownload cannot repair an entitlement that belongs to a different account or a transaction that never completed.

Bethesda specifically explains that a profile without the Anniversary Edition purchase can be prompted to upgrade even when another profile on the same console owns it. That prompt is therefore evidence to check the active profile, not proof that the console has lost every installation. If several people use the PS5, identify which profile completed the purchase and perform the entitlement check there.

For a purchase that is pending, reversed or absent from the history, resolve the transaction with PlayStation rather than deleting Skyrim. Keep the order date, item name and account identifier available if support is required.
Check the transaction for the exact product, not merely for a Skyrim purchase. A record for Special Edition confirms the game purchase; it does not automatically confirm a separate Anniversary Upgrade. Conversely, an Anniversary Edition record should be compared with the Store description for your market so that a regional bundle name is not mistaken for a missing add-on.
If the content belongs to another household profile, sign into that purchasing profile for the ownership check. A prompt displayed while using a different profile is consistent with Bethesda’s documented Anniversary behavior. Do not buy the same item again until the purchasing account and completed transaction have been established; a second purchase does not correct a license-recognition failure.

Once ownership is confirmed, work on the queue. PlayStation’s game-download troubleshooting guide recommends retrying the download and checking the console conditions that can block it.
- Press the PS button to open the Control Center and select Downloads/Uploads.
- Find the Skyrim game or add-on entry. If it is paused, select it and choose the option to resume.
- If resuming does nothing, pause it once, wait briefly, and resume again. This refreshes a stalled queue entry without removing the game.
- If the entry remains stuck, cancel and delete that queue item.
- Open Game Library, locate Skyrim, and retry the download from the library rather than repeatedly selecting the old queue notification.
Check the three conditions that can stop a retry
- PlayStation service status: A Store or network service interruption can prevent a valid download from starting. Check the status page before assuming the purchase is faulty.
- System software: Install any available PS5 system-software update. An outdated console can interfere with Store operations.
- Free storage: Confirm that the PS5 has enough free space for the game or add-on. Freeing space is the remedy when capacity is the limiting factor; buying another device is not required for an account or license problem.
When checking storage, look for enough room for the item the queue is trying to install, not just a small amount of free space visible at a glance. If space is the blocker, remove or move existing content according to your normal PS5 storage options, then retry from Game Library. No accessory is a general fix for an entitlement, license or Store-service problem.
If the download fails again after these checks, record the exact error code or message. Do not jump to a whole-game reinstall while the Store cannot establish the download. A reinstall cannot supply a purchase that is absent from the account transaction history, and it may leave the same queue or service problem unresolved.
5. Restore the Skyrim license
A game or add-on can be owned and downloaded yet remain invisible because the console has not recognized its license. On PS5, PlayStation’s official path is:

- Choose Other.
- Select Restore Licenses.
- Choose the relevant license and let the process finish.
The complete procedure and the missing-add-on use case are described in PlayStation’s license-restoration instructions. PlayStation states: “Please note, restoring licenses won’t affect your data.” It is therefore a low-risk step for a missing add-on and should come before removing the installed game.

After the restoration completes, return to Skyrim and check the content again. If the console still shows a purchase prompt, go back to the account-and-transaction step: license restoration cannot create ownership for a different profile or an incomplete order.
License restoration is especially appropriate when the Store shows that you own an add-on but Skyrim does not. It is not a substitute for installing the title update, freeing storage or resolving a failed transaction. Treat it as a recognition refresh within the same ownership chain: correct account, completed purchase, then refreshed license.
6. Update Skyrim before diagnosing an add-on-check freeze
If Skyrim freezes on “Checking for add-ons” or “Checking for Downloadable Content,” update the game before trying a reinstall. Bethesda explains that this symptom occurs when DLC is installed to the console but the title does not have the most recent update. Bethesda’s wording refers to a console generally, so this is not described as a PS5-only bug.
- Connect the PS5 to the internet.
- Start Skyrim and allow it to obtain and install its current title update when prompted.
- Wait for the update to finish before launching the game again or judging whether the add-on is missing.

Do not interpret the check screen alone as proof that the DLC download failed. Bethesda’s explanation specifically describes DLC installed on the console with an older title update. Let the patch complete, then test Skyrim again. If the title no longer hangs but an item is still absent, return to the content-type and license branches rather than reinstalling automatically.
7. Handle Creations separately from official DLC
For Skyrim Special Edition, Bethesda directs players to the in-game Creations menu to download Creations. Use that menu when the missing item is a Creation rather than Dawnguard, Hearthfire, Dragonborn or Anniversary content. The workflow and supported content type are described in Bethesda’s Creations installation guidance.
First establish whether the item is absent from the Creations menu, absent after activation, or causing the game to stop starting. Those are different observations. An official Store add-on should be checked through PlayStation ownership, queue and license tools. A Creation should be checked through the in-game menu. Mixing the two can make a successful Store download appear to have failed simply because the item is expected in the wrong interface.

Bethesda documents a different escalation for a console copy of Skyrim Special Edition that becomes stuck or will not start after activating many Creations. This is a targeted recovery for a Creation-related startup failure. It is not a universal answer to a download that never began, a missing Store entitlement, a padlock or a normal official-DLC visibility problem. Complete the account, queue, license and update checks first unless your symptom is specifically the documented many-Creations startup failure.
8. Understand the Anniversary Upgrade reinstall limitation
Bethesda states that the Anniversary Upgrade cannot be uninstalled separately on PlayStation. If you need to remove particular Anniversary content, the supported approach may require uninstalling and reinstalling Skyrim, then selecting the content you want to use. Bethesda’s instructions for enabling or disabling purchased Creation Club content are available at Enable or disable purchased Creation Club content.
Because this operation removes the game installation, reserve it for a confirmed content-management need or a Bethesda-supported startup failure. First verify the purchasing account, completed transaction, download queue and restored license. If those checks show that the entitlement is missing rather than incorrectly installed, reinstalling cannot supply it.
The limitation also explains why deleting one Anniversary component is not always an available fix on PlayStation. If the goal is to change which purchased Anniversary content is active, follow Bethesda’s content-management route instead of deleting random files or repeatedly canceling downloads. If the goal is simply to make an owned add-on appear, license and update checks remain the lower-risk path.
9. A low-risk complete troubleshooting order
Follow this sequence from least disruptive to most disruptive. Stop as soon as the relevant symptom is resolved.
- Name the content: Decide whether it is Dawnguard, Hearthfire, Dragonborn, Anniversary content or a Creation.
- Confirm the edition: Compare the PS5 Store listing for your region with the edition or upgrade you purchased. Remember that the US listing describes PS4/PS5 Special Edition and an Anniversary Edition containing the three official add-ons plus Creation Club content.
- Use the purchasing account: Sign in with the account that completed the transaction and inspect its transaction history.
- Retry the queue: In Control Center, open Downloads/Uploads, pause and resume the entry, then cancel/delete it and retry through Game Library if it remains stuck.
- Check service, software and space: Verify PlayStation service status, update PS5 system software and free enough storage for the download.
- Restore licenses: Use Settings > Users and Accounts > Other > Restore Licenses.
- Update Skyrim: Connect to the internet and let the title obtain its latest patch, especially when the game hangs while checking add-ons.

Keeping these distinctions clear avoids destructive troubleshooting. An ownership prompt, a queue failure and a title-update freeze can look similar from the player’s perspective but require different fixes.

11. What to send PlayStation Support
If the ordered checks do not restore the add-on, contact PlayStation Support through the download-troubleshooting route. Provide the exact error message or code, the Skyrim edition, the name of the missing content, the account and transaction details requested by support, and the steps that reproduce the failure.
Also note when it happened and whether the problem occurs on the download screen, after launching Skyrim or while the game checks for add-ons.
