How to Fix Crashes, Black Screens, and Launch Problems in Midnight Club 3 DUB Edition on PC

By VGSources Team 12 min read

Midnight Club 3: DUB Edition does not have a native Windows version covered by the evidence here. These fixes apply to the PlayStation 2 release running in the PCSX2 emulator. Start by updating PCSX2, then verify your game image. A failed verification means you should make a new dump from your own disc, not download a replacement. If PCSX2 itself crashes, investigate Windows graphics drivers or the Visual C++ runtime before changing game settings.

The exact moment of failure matters. A black screen while loading, a crash in the Rockstar San Diego opening video, a FIFO assertion when selecting “go to menus,” and a GSUploadQueue assertion during hardware rendering are different failure paths. The reports behind them do not prove one universal Midnight Club 3 setting, so use the branch that matches your symptom.

First, confirm what you are troubleshooting

This guide concerns Midnight Club 3: DUB Edition for PlayStation 2 running through PCSX2 on a computer. It is not a guide to a native PC port, because the available evidence does not establish one. Your game image, PCSX2 build, operating system, renderer, graphics card, driver, edition and region can all affect the result.

  • PCSX2 version or revision number.
  • Operating system and version, such as Windows 11.
  • Midnight Club 3 edition and disc region, for example NTSC or PAL, if known.
  • Renderer selected in PCSX2 and the graphics processor in use.
  • The exact point of failure: emulator startup, settings window, game boot, opening video, race, or return to a menu.
  • The full error text, including any FIFO, GSUploadQueue, Visual C++ or connectivity code.
  • Whether you used a savestate, and whether the affected memory-card save has ever been used on original hardware.

Keep a copy of your current memory-card files before experimenting. That protects your progress while you determine whether a particular save or savestate is involved; it does not establish that the save is the cause.

Use this diagnostic order

What you see Start here What the evidence supports
PCSX2 will not open, or crashes while opening settings Update the GPU driver. If the message names MSVCP140.dll, install the x64 Visual C++ Redistributable from Microsoft’s official distribution channel. PCSX2’s Windows guidance identifies outdated graphics drivers and the missing runtime for these specific symptoms.
PCSX2 opens, but the game is black or does not load Update PCSX2, then use Game Properties > Summary > Verify. PCSX2 says a black screen or failed load usually indicates a corrupted or incomplete game dump.
Crash during the Rockstar San Diego opening video If RetroAchievements is enabled and error 12001 appears, disable RetroAchievements temporarily and test again. This is a diagnostic workaround from one 2026 report, not a confirmed general fix.
Black screen and FIFO error after choosing “go to menus” Record whether a savestate was used, then verify the game image. A 2024 issue report received that advice; it did not prove a save-history cause.
GSUploadQueue assertion with hardware rendering Capture your renderer, GPU, operating system and driver versions and consult current PCSX2 compatibility information. The cited report involved one Arch Linux/AMD configuration, not all hardware-renderer users.

1. Update PCSX2 before changing game settings

PCSX2’s general troubleshooting guidance puts updating the emulator first. Builds change how games, renderers, video playback and memory are handled, so a setting that was useful for an older revision can be irrelevant or harmful on a current one.

  1. Close the running game and PCSX2.
  2. Install or launch the current official PCSX2 build you intend to use.
  3. Start the game without adding a new speedhack, patch or renderer override.
  4. Reproduce the original symptom and note whether the failure moved, disappeared or remained identical.

Do not treat a community compatibility page’s historical recommendation as a current requirement. The compatibility wiki contains version-specific caveats, including an older warning about changing settings during a race. Check the emulator version associated with any advice before applying it, and change one setting at a time so you can undo a change that makes the behavior worse.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Verify the game image when it stays black or does not load

If PCSX2 opens normally but Midnight Club 3 remains on a black screen or fails to load, check the disc image before hunting for a graphics tweak. PCSX2 identifies a corrupted or incomplete dump as the usual explanation for this class of failure.

  1. Open the game’s entry in PCSX2.
  2. Open Properties.
  3. Select the Summary tab.
  4. Choose Verify and wait for the check to finish.

A failed verification means the image is not a trustworthy dump. Redump the game from your own PlayStation 2 disc using a method that produces a complete, unmodified image, then verify the new file again. Do not replace it with an image from an untrusted download. A game image is separate from the PCSX2 program: updating the emulator cannot repair missing or damaged sectors in the image.

If verification succeeds, keep the result and the exact PCSX2 version in your notes. A successful check does not guarantee that every renderer or video path will work, but it removes the most direct image-integrity explanation and lets you investigate the failure point itself.

3. When PCSX2 itself crashes or will not open

Crashes while opening settings or shows a launch error

PCSX2’s Windows troubleshooting guidance specifically points to outdated GPU drivers when the emulator crashes while opening settings or displays a related launch error. Update the driver through the instructions supplied by your graphics-card manufacturer, restart Windows if the installer requests it, and test PCSX2 before changing game-specific options.

This advice is for emulator startup and settings-window failures. It should not be presented as an explanation for every crash inside Midnight Club 3, especially if PCSX2 remains stable until a video or menu transition.

The message says MSVCP140.dll is missing

Install the x64 Visual C++ Redistributable from Microsoft’s official distribution channel, then restart PCSX2. The missing-runtime instruction applies to that named error. Do not download an individual DLL from a random “DLL fix” site: the supported runtime installer is the safer way to supply the required library and its dependencies.

If the runtime is installed but the same message persists, record whether Windows is 64-bit, whether the installer completed successfully and the exact text of the error. Avoid copying a DLL into the PCSX2 folder as a substitute for repairing the runtime installation.

4. A black screen during game boot

Separate a normal transition from a failed boot. A brief blank frame while a scene changes is not the same as a screen that remains black while audio, input or the emulator stops responding. For a persistent boot failure, use the update-and-verify sequence rather than immediately forcing a different renderer.

  1. Confirm that PCSX2 is current.
  2. Run Properties > Summary > Verify on the game image.
  3. Redump from your own disc if verification fails.
  4. Retry with the same renderer and settings so the result is comparable.
  5. If the image verifies and the failure remains, capture the exact point and any assertion text before consulting current PCSX2 compatibility or issue information.

This process distinguishes an image problem from an emulator or configuration problem. It also gives anyone helping you enough information to avoid prescribing a fix for a different release or build.

5. Crashes during the opening FMVs

A startup-video crash has a different profile from a game image that never boots. Issue #14390, opened May 3, 2026, describes a Windows 11 crash during the Rockstar San Diego intro while using PCSX2 revision 2.7.309. The report’s author later connected the failure to RetroAchievements and connectivity error 12001.

If your configuration matches that pattern, use the feature as a controlled diagnostic test:

  1. Record the PCSX2 revision, Windows version and the exact video at which the crash occurs.
  2. Note whether RetroAchievements is enabled.
  3. Check whether connectivity error 12001 appears at the same time.
  4. Temporarily disable RetroAchievements and launch the same verified image again.
  5. Compare the result with the feature enabled, without changing several other settings at once.

If the opening video now plays, that is useful evidence about the interaction in your setup; it is not proof that RetroAchievements causes every Midnight Club 3 FMV crash. The report is a single user’s case, and it does not establish a universal remedy for other revisions, operating systems or connectivity conditions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

6. Black screen and FIFO errors when choosing “go to menus”

Some reports place the failure after gameplay, when the player selects “go to menus,” rather than during initial loading. Issue #11289, opened May 22, 2024, describes a black-screen halt followed by a FIFO error at that transition. A maintainer asked whether savestates were involved and recommended verifying the game image.

Use that report to structure your investigation, not to assign blame:

  1. Reproduce the transition and write down the exact menu command that triggers it.
  2. Test once from a normal boot and once without loading a savestate, if you can do so without risking your progress.
  3. Verify the game image through Properties > Summary > Verify.
  4. Record whether the affected save was also used on original PlayStation 2 hardware.
  5. Keep the FIFO text, PCSX2 revision, renderer and operating system with the report.

The reporter distinguished the affected save from another save that had not left PCSX2, but that observation does not prove that hardware history, savestates or the save itself is the root cause. A 2022 forum report also mentions a VIF FIFO assertion after returning to menus. Together these reports show a recurring symptom pattern, not a broadly validated resolution. Do not delete a save or declare it damaged solely because a menu transition produced an assertion.

7. Hardware-renderer GSUploadQueue assertions

Issue #10048 concerns a GSUploadQueue assertion in one Arch Linux and AMD setup using hardware rendering. That narrow report is a clue to capture renderer-specific evidence, not a reason to tell every player to switch renderers.

If your crash correlates with hardware rendering:

  • Write down the renderer name selected in PCSX2.
  • Record the GPU model, operating system and graphics-driver version.
  • Capture the complete GSUploadQueue assertion and the point in the game where it appears.
  • Check current PCSX2 compatibility and issue information for your exact platform.
  • Only then perform a controlled comparison with another renderer, keeping the image, save and PCSX2 revision unchanged.

A renderer comparison can show whether the symptom is renderer-dependent in your environment. It cannot establish that software rendering is a permanent fix, or that hardware rendering is universally incompatible with this game.

8. How to report a crash that remains

A precise report is more valuable than a list of random settings. Include:

  • “Stuck on a black screen,” “does not load correctly,” “crashes when opening settings,” “crashes during bootup videos” or the exact phrase that best describes the symptom.
  • PCSX2 version or revision, including whether it changed after the failure was first observed.
  • Windows or Linux version, GPU model, driver version and renderer.
  • Midnight Club 3 edition and region.
  • Whether the image passed verification.
  • Whether RetroAchievements was enabled and whether error 12001 appeared.
  • Whether a savestate was loaded and whether the save had been used on original hardware.
  • The complete assertion or crash message, not only the first line.
  • The smallest sequence that reproduces the problem, such as “load career, finish race, select go to menus.”

Change one variable between tests. Updating PCSX2, replacing an image, switching renderers and loading a different save simultaneously makes the result impossible to interpret.

9. Build a reproducible test instead of guessing

Once the basic update and verification steps are complete, use a short, repeatable test sequence. Start PCSX2, boot the same verified image, use the same renderer, and perform the smallest action that reliably reaches the failure. For an opening-video crash, that may simply be a cold boot through the Rockstar San Diego intro. For a menu failure, record the race or mode, the save slot, and the exact “go to menus” action.

Run the baseline twice before changing anything. If the result changes between identical runs, note that inconsistency rather than labeling the problem solved. Then alter only one variable: RetroAchievements, a renderer, a savestate, or the image. Keep the original memory-card copy untouched so you can return to the same state. This method separates a reproducible emulator defect from a one-time interruption and prevents several simultaneous changes from creating a false conclusion.

10. Keep image, emulator and save evidence separate

Three different pieces are often confused during troubleshooting. PCSX2 is the emulator program; the disc image is the game data it reads; and a memory-card file or savestate stores progress and emulator state. Updating one does not repair the others. A verified image can still encounter a renderer-specific assertion, while an unverified image can produce a black screen before any game setting matters.

When comparing tests, keep the same image and PCSX2 revision whenever possible. If you redump, label the old and new files clearly and run verification on both. If you test without a savestate, do so from a normal boot and record that difference. If a save has been used on original hardware, document that history as context only; the menu-transition report did not establish it as a cause.

11. Interpreting historical compatibility advice

Community compatibility pages and older forum posts can reveal recurring wording such as VIF FIFO assertions, but they are not automatically instructions for a current build. The compatibility entry includes version-specific caveats and historical advice, including a warning about changing settings during a race in older versions. A setting that addressed one revision may be unnecessary in a newer release or may change the symptom without fixing it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before using an old recommendation, identify the PCSX2 version, operating system, renderer and game region described in the original context. If those details are missing, treat the recommendation as a hypothesis. Test it only after the image passes verification, and revert it if it changes performance or introduces a new failure. Current PCSX2 compatibility and issue information is more relevant than an undated list of tweaks.

What not to do

  • Do not assume a native Windows edition exists because the title is being played on a PC; these instructions concern PS2 emulation.
  • Do not download a BIOS or game image from an unofficial source as a crash remedy.
  • Do not treat one issue report as proof of a universal RetroAchievements, savestate or renderer fix.
  • Do not apply old compatibility-wiki settings without checking which PCSX2 version they describe.
  • Do not install a loose DLL from an untrusted website when the named error is MSVCP140.dll; use the official x64 Visual C++ Redistributable.
  • Do not erase a memory-card save merely because a FIFO assertion occurred during a menu transition.

Bottom line

For Midnight Club 3 DUB Edition in PCSX2, the highest-value sequence is simple: update PCSX2, verify the game image, redump from your own disc if verification fails, and keep emulator startup problems separate from in-game crashes. Then match the remaining symptom to its evidence: investigate drivers or the Visual C++ runtime for PCSX2 launch failures, test RetroAchievements only when the opening-FMV and error-12001 pattern fits, and document savestate, FIFO or hardware-renderer details instead of assuming a single universal setting.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this a fix for a native Windows version of Midnight Club 3?

No. The documented troubleshooting applies to the PlayStation 2 release running in PCSX2. It does not establish that a native Windows edition is available.

What should I do first if Midnight Club 3 stays on a black screen?

Update PCSX2, open the game’s Properties, choose Summary, and run Verify. PCSX2 identifies a corrupted or incomplete dump as the usual reason a game remains black or does not load. If verification fails, redump from your own disc.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I download another ISO when verification fails?

No. Make a new, complete dump from your own PlayStation 2 disc and verify that file. An unofficial replacement can be incomplete or altered, and it does not provide a trustworthy diagnostic baseline.

Why does PCSX2 crash when I open settings?

PCSX2’s Windows troubleshooting points to outdated GPU drivers for crashes while opening settings or a related launch error. Update the driver through your GPU manufacturer’s official instructions before changing game-specific settings.

How do I fix a missing MSVCP140.dll message?

Install the x64 Visual C++ Redistributable from Microsoft’s official distribution channel, then restart PCSX2. Do not download a loose DLL from a third-party fix site.

Can disabling RetroAchievements fix a crash in the opening video?

It is worth testing only when your symptoms match the reported case: a crash during the Rockstar San Diego intro with RetroAchievements enabled and connectivity error 12001. Disable the feature temporarily and compare. One report does not prove it is a universal fix.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Are savestates or original-console saves proven to cause the FIFO menu crash?

No. A 2024 report asked about savestates and recommended image verification, while the player described different save histories. Those details are useful comparisons, not proof that a save, savestate, or original-console use is the cause.

Should everyone switch away from hardware rendering after a GSUploadQueue error?

No. The cited GSUploadQueue report involved one Arch Linux/AMD configuration. Record your renderer, GPU, driver and operating system, consult current PCSX2 issue information, and make a controlled renderer comparison rather than applying a universal switch.

The Bottom Line

Update PCSX2, verify and if necessary redump your own game image, then diagnose the exact failure point. Treat FMV, FIFO, savestate and renderer workarounds as conditional tests, not universal fixes.
