If Steam does not detect your controller, start with updates and a full restart, then test a direct wired connection before changing game settings. That sequence tells you whether the failure is at the controller-to-device connection, Steam’s device detection, or one game’s Steam Input configuration.
The correct menu depends on your hardware. A Steam Deck, the 2026 Steam Controller, and the legacy 2015 Steam Controller use different pairing and detection screens, so follow the section for your device rather than assuming every Steam controller option is identical.

Identify where detection stops
“Steam Input is not detecting my controller” can describe three different failures. Separating them prevents you from changing game profiles when the operating system cannot see the device, or replacing hardware when only one game has an input conflict.

Write down the controller model, connection method (USB, Bluetooth, or proprietary receiver), host platform (Windows PC, macOS, or Steam Deck), and whether the host operating system recognizes it. Those details determine which Valve support path applies.

Use the connection method as a diagnostic, not just a convenience

Change one variable at a time and record the result. For example, test the same controller and cable in a second direct port before changing the cable and port together. That makes the eventual support report much more useful.
1. Update everything, then restart
Install pending Steam and operating-system updates. Also install any firmware update Steam offers for the controller or its receiver. Valve lists updating and restarting as first-line actions for the current Steam Controller and Steam Deck troubleshooting guidance (Steam Controller (2026) feature and troubleshooting guide; Steam Deck basic use and troubleshooting guide).
- Quit Steam completely, including its background process.
- Restart the host device.
- Turn the controller off and back on, or remove and reinsert its receiver.
- Launch Steam and check detection before opening the game.
On Steam Deck, temporarily exit or disable third-party applications installed in Desktop Mode while retesting an input problem. This is a diagnostic step: it removes software that can intercept or remap input, but it does not prove that a third-party application is the cause.

Restarting is especially useful after a firmware update, a Bluetooth pairing change, or moving a receiver between ports. Steam may retain a stale device state until its client and the host have both been restarted. If the controller is still absent after the restart, continue with the connection test rather than repeating the same reset indefinitely.
2. Prove that the controller connects to the device
Do this before adjusting Steam Input profiles. A direct wired test is the fastest way to distinguish a wireless or pairing fault from a Steam configuration fault, provided your controller supports data over USB.
Use a suitable wired connection
Connect the controller directly to the host with a USB data cable, not a cable intended only for charging. A charging-only cable can power a controller while providing no data, producing a misleading failed test. Avoid hubs and docks for the first test so the controller has a direct path to the host.
The 2026 Steam Controller documents three connection modes: Puck wireless, Bluetooth, and USB-C wired. With that controller switched off, plugging it directly into a PC should power it in USB-C mode; its LED should be green. This LED behavior is specific to the 2026 Steam Controller and should not be generalized to other models (Valve’s 2026 Steam Controller connection instructions).

- Wired also fails: try another known-good data cable and another direct USB port, then check whether the host operating system detects any USB device at all.
- The controller powers on but never appears: power confirms only that electricity is reaching it; it does not confirm a data connection or Steam detection.
A generic USB-C data cable is an optional diagnostic accessory for controllers that support USB-C data. It is not required for Bluetooth or proprietary wireless controllers, and buying one cannot fix a controller that lacks wired-data support. Check the connector and cable specification before purchasing: USB-C describes the plug shape, not automatically the presence of data lines.

Pair Bluetooth on Steam Deck
On Steam Deck, open Settings > Bluetooth. If the controller is not listed, enable Show all devices, then look for it again. Install any controller firmware update offered during the process. If pairing still fails, forget the controller in Bluetooth settings and pair it again from the beginning.
Valve notes that many Xbox controllers may need a firmware update to work as expected with Steam Deck. Treat that as a compatibility check for those controllers, not as a requirement for every Bluetooth model (Steam Deck basic use and troubleshooting guide).
Do not assume a controller that is paired to a phone, television, or another computer is available to the Deck at the same time. Remove the old pairing from the other host or turn that host’s Bluetooth off while you perform a clean Deck pairing. If the controller appears only after Show all devices is enabled, note that detail for future troubleshooting.

If the operating system itself never registers the controller over a direct cable or Bluetooth, Steam cannot discover it. Resolve the host-level connection first: try a different cable or port, remove the Bluetooth pairing and pair again, or follow the controller manufacturer’s firmware procedure. If the operating system does see it, continue to Steam’s device test instead of repeating pairing steps.
For a receiver, confirm that the host notices the receiver itself, not merely that the controller’s status light is on. A receiver can receive power from a port while its data connection is unreliable. This is why a direct port test, without a hub or dock, is more informative than checking the controller light alone.
3. Confirm detection in Steam’s own test view
Use the screen appropriate to your hardware. Labels can change with Steam client updates, but these are Valve’s documented routes.
Steam Deck: test controller inputs
- Open the Steam menu.
- Select Settings.
- Choose Controller.
- Select Test Controller Inputs.
- Press buttons, move sticks, and use triggers while watching the test response.
If the test reacts, the Deck and Steam can communicate with the controller. A game that still ignores input is a game-configuration problem, not a basic discovery failure. If the test view is empty, return to the connection checks and Bluetooth instructions above.

Legacy 2015 Steam Controller: use Big Picture Mode
- Enter Big Picture Mode.
- Open Settings > Controller > Controller settings.
- Look under Detected Controllers.
The “Detected Controllers” list is part of Valve’s support flow for the 2015 Steam Controller. It is not the same menu as the Steam Deck input test, and it may not be shown with identical wording in the current desktop client (Valve’s 2015 Steam Controller unresponsive-input guide).
If the legacy controller is listed, leave the detection screen and test it in the affected game only after confirming that Steam sees it. If it is missing, return to USB, receiver, pairing, and update checks; editing a game layout cannot make an undetected device appear in this list.
2026 Steam Controller: check its connection details
For the 2026 model, first establish whether USB-C, Bluetooth, or the Puck connection is active. Steam’s controller details page can show the Puck’s signal-strength indicator. Use that indicator during wireless testing, then move the puck and retest rather than relying only on whether the controller’s LEDs are lit.
Test one mode at a time. Disconnect or switch off the unused wireless path while checking USB-C, then return to the Puck or Bluetooth mode after the wired result is known. This avoids confusing a successful USB connection with a wireless fix.
4. When Steam detects it but a game does not
If Steam’s input test responds, do not treat the symptom as device discovery. Open the affected game’s Steam controller configuration and verify that the selected layout matches the game’s supported input style. A profile designed for a different control scheme can make a working controller appear dead in that title.
Check the game’s Steam controller configuration
- Open the game’s controller configuration from its Steam page or in-game Steam interface.
- Confirm that Steam Input is enabled or disabled according to the game’s documented compatibility and the profile you intend to use.
- Apply a known-compatible layout, then test in the game’s own controls screen.
- Close and relaunch the game after changing the configuration so it requests input again.
Valve’s legacy Steam Controller guidance says the Steam Overlay is vital to Steam Controller functionality and directs users to enable it when it is unavailable. That advice is scoped to Valve’s 2015 Steam Controller support flow; it is not a universal statement that every third-party controller requires the Overlay (2015 Steam Controller unresponsive-input support).
Distinguish a profile problem from an unsupported input style
A controller can produce valid events in Steam while a game accepts only a particular input style, such as a traditional gamepad layout or keyboard-and-mouse bindings. If changing to a supported layout fixes the game, the controller was detected correctly and no receiver or cable repair is indicated. If the game still ignores every valid layout while Steam’s test works, check the game’s own controller and Overlay settings before returning to hardware troubleshooting.
Use a second game as a comparison only after the Steam test succeeds. If another game responds, the original title’s profile or input support is the stronger lead. If no game responds despite a working Steam test, review the global and per-game Steam Input choice, the Overlay state, and whether the game was relaunched after the change.

5. Isolate USB ports, receivers, and interference
Wireless receivers and pucks can be sensitive to the USB path and their physical surroundings. Steam documents intermittent disconnection, unreliable connections, and performance changes that can occur when other USB devices create scheduling or contention issues (Troubleshooting USB connection and contention issues).
- Disconnect unnecessary USB devices, especially high-bandwidth storage or capture hardware.
- Move the controller receiver or puck to a different USB port.
- Retest with the host’s other ports, one at a time, rather than changing several variables simultaneously.
- Keep the receiver or puck unobstructed and as close to the controller as practical.
If detection changes when only the USB port changes, the controller may be healthy while the original port, hub, cable routing, or USB-device combination is unreliable. Continue using the stable port for diagnosis and investigate the port or hub separately.
2026 Steam Controller Puck
Check the Puck signal-strength indicator in Steam’s controller details. Valve recommends clear line of sight and moving likely interference sources away from the Puck, including Wi-Fi access points and high-speed USB devices (2026 Steam Controller feature and troubleshooting guide).
Do not hide the Puck behind a metal panel, inside a crowded cable bundle, or where the host blocks its path to the controller. Move one suspected source at a time and watch whether the signal indicator or input stability changes. A stronger indicator does not guarantee that every game will accept input, but a change after relocation identifies the wireless path as a useful lead.
Steam Deck docked over Bluetooth
When a Steam Deck is docked and using Bluetooth, preserve a clear line of sight, move the Deck away from other 2.4 GHz devices, and separate high-bandwidth USB 3 accessories from the Deck. Valve lists these steps in its docking guidance (Docking the Steam Deck).
These changes are most useful for intermittent behavior: a controller that appears, disappears, or drops input after another device is connected. They are less likely to solve a controller that never powers on or is absent from the host operating system over every connection method.

7. Avoid common troubleshooting traps
- Do not use a charging-only cable as proof that USB data is broken. Power and data are separate functions.
- Do not test through a dock first. A dock or hub can add port, power, and USB-scheduling variables.
- Do not apply the 2026 controller’s green-LED behavior to another model. Indicator meanings are device-specific.
- Do not keep editing a game profile when Steam’s device test is empty. Solve discovery before configuration.
- Do not assume every controller needs the legacy Steam Overlay path. Valve’s Overlay instruction is tied to its 2015 Steam Controller support flow.
- Do not replace hardware based on one intermittent drop. First test another port, remove competing USB devices, and improve receiver or Puck placement.
8. Escalate with useful evidence
If the controller still does not appear after the relevant branch, contact Steam Support with precise device information. For current Steam Controller service concerns, Valve directs users to Steam Support rather than recommending user disassembly or replacement parts (Steam Controller (2026) feature and troubleshooting guide).

Include:
- The exact controller model: Steam Deck controls, 2026 Steam Controller, 2015 Steam Controller, or another controller.
- Host platform and operating-system version.
- Connection method and, for wireless, whether you use Bluetooth or a Puck/receiver.
- Whether a direct USB data test works and whether the host operating system lists the device.
- The Steam menu where detection fails and whether the Steam input test responds.
- Any change caused by another USB port, removing other devices, updating firmware, or disabling a Desktop Mode utility.
Do not infer a hardware failure solely from one game refusing input. Conversely, do not spend time rebuilding a game layout when the controller is absent from the host or from Steam’s own test view. The failure layer determines the next useful action.

Why is my controller not detected by Steam but visible to Windows or macOS?
Restart Steam and the host, install Steam, operating-system, and controller firmware updates, then open the device-specific Steam detection view. If the operating system sees the controller but Steam’s test or Detected Controllers list is empty, temporarily disable input-remapping utilities and, on Steam Deck, third-party Desktop Mode applications while retesting.
Can a USB-C cable fix Steam Input not detecting a controller?
Only when the controller supports wired USB data. Use a known-good data cable and connect directly to the host, not through a hub or dock. A charging-only cable may power the controller without transmitting input, and a cable cannot add wired-data support to a controller that does not have it.
How do I test a controller on Steam Deck?
Open Steam > Settings > Controller > Test Controller Inputs, then press buttons and move the sticks and triggers. If the test responds, Steam and the Deck can communicate with the controller; a single game that still ignores input needs game-specific configuration checks.
