For a better balance of image quality and smooth play, change one graphics option at a time and compare it in the same gameplay scene. Start with resolution or render scale and supported upscaling if performance is below your goal; then decide whether demanding effects such as ray tracing are worth their measured cost on your PC. There is no universal best preset: results depend on the game, hardware, display, and the feature’s implementation.

Start with a fair baseline

Before changing settings, note your GPU, CPU, memory, display resolution and refresh rate, and the game version. Begin with the game’s default or recommended preset, then choose a repeatable area that resembles normal play. A built-in benchmark, if the game has one, can help; otherwise use the same route, camera position, and actions for each comparison.

Record average FPS and, if available, frame-time or percentile data. Average FPS is useful, but it cannot describe every stutter or uneven frame. AMD’s Radeon Game Advisor documentation says its performance report includes average FPS and 95th-percentile frame time, a measure of longer frame-processing times. See AMD’s instructions for Game Advisor.

  1. Run the scene at your starting settings and record the result.
  2. Change one setting only, then replay the same scene and record again.
  3. Check whether the visual difference matters during play, not just in a still image.
  4. Keep the change only if its performance benefit is worth the image-quality trade-off; otherwise restore the previous value.

Changing several options at once makes it hard to identify which change helped or harmed performance. Comparisons are meaningful only when the scene and test conditions stay consistent.

Which settings should you tune first?

Resolution and render scale

Resolution determines how many pixels the game has to render. Higher output resolutions generally require more rendering work. Render scale changes the resolution used to draw the game world, often while leaving menus and interface elements at the display’s native resolution. Reducing either can improve performance, but may make the image softer or less detailed. Judge the result at your normal viewing distance and display resolution.

If the game supports an upscaler, try it as an alternative to simply lowering output resolution. NVIDIA’s guide to Control, for example, describes rendering below output resolution while retaining a native-resolution UI. That is an explanation of that game’s implementation, not a guarantee about every title. NVIDIA’s Control graphics and performance guide covers its specific settings.

Upscaling and frame generation are different

Upscaling reconstructs an output image from a lower-resolution render. Frame generation creates additional displayed frames. They address different parts of the experience, and a game may offer one, both, or neither. Support depends on the game’s integration and, in some cases, compatible hardware. Check the game’s graphics menu and the relevant vendor documentation rather than assuming a feature is available because your GPU supports a brand name.

NVIDIA lists DLSS Super Resolution, Frame Generation, Ray Reconstruction, DLAA, and Reflex as distinct capabilities in its feature family. AMD’s FSR technologies page also describes multiple capabilities, including upscaling and frame generation. These are not interchangeable settings, and a vendor’s feature list does not establish that every game supports every feature. See NVIDIA DLSS and AMD FSR technologies.

8Bitdo Ultimate 2C Wireless Controller for Windows PC and Android, with 1000 Hz Polling Rate, Hall Effect Joysticks and Triggers, and Remappable L4/R4 Bumpers (Green)
  • Compatible with Windows and Android.
  • 1000Hz Polling Rate (for 2.4G and wired connection)
  • Hall Effect joysticks and Hall triggers. Wear-resistant metal joystick rings.
  • Extra R4/L4 bumpers. Custom button mapping without using software. Turbo function.
  • Refined bumpers and D-pad. Light but tactile.

When comparing upscaling options, use the same output resolution and scene. Consider image quality, average performance, frame-time consistency, responsiveness, and whether the feature works with your hardware and display. Frame generation can raise the displayed frame rate, but judge responsiveness as well as the number shown; generated frames are not the same as the game rendering each frame directly.

Ray tracing and other demanding effects

Ray tracing can add visual effects such as more realistic lighting or reflections, but it can also require substantial rendering work. Its cost varies with the game’s implementation and your configuration, so there is no reliable universal percentage to expect. Try the game’s ray-tracing options one at a time and compare the actual scene and measured performance. NVIDIA’s discussion and charts for Control apply to that game and its specified configurations, not to all titles.

Apply the same test to other graphics options: shadows, reflections, texture detail, and effects may differ in visual importance and performance cost from one game to another. If a setting’s change is hard to notice during normal play, its performance cost may not be worthwhile for your priorities.

Set a performance goal that fits your display

There is no single FPS target that suits every player or screen. Your goal should reflect the game, the kind of play you do, and the display’s refresh rate. A higher refresh rate can show more frequent updates when the PC can deliver them, but it does not make the game render faster by itself. If smoothness is the issue, use consistent measurements and observe frame pacing rather than relying only on a peak or average FPS figure.

Check refresh rate and variable refresh rate

Make sure the display is configured for its intended refresh rate in the game and operating system. Windows’ Graphics settings page also explains variable refresh rate (VRR): a compatible display can adjust its refresh rate based on the game’s frame rate. Microsoft identifies FreeSync, G-SYNC, and VESA DisplayPort Adaptive-Sync among the compatible technologies. VRR can improve how frame-rate changes are presented, but it does not reduce the work of rendering each frame. Read Microsoft’s overview of the redesigned Graphics settings page.

VRR requires compatible support across the display and system. If your screen does not have the capability, a VRR-capable gaming monitor may be an option only if your system and games can use it; compare compatibility, resolution, refresh-rate range, and budget. A new display does not increase the GPU’s rendering throughput.

A repeatable tuning order

  1. Establish the baseline. Record your hardware, display settings, game version, starting preset, and results in a representative scene.
  2. Test resolution or render scale. If performance is short of your goal, reduce the render workload modestly and inspect the image at your normal display settings.
  3. Try supported upscaling. Compare available modes at the same output resolution and judge both clarity and performance.
  4. Evaluate ray tracing and costly effects. Toggle each option separately, keeping it only when the visual improvement justifies its measured effect in your game.
  5. Fine-tune other settings. Change one option at a time, replay the same scene, and revert changes that do not provide a worthwhile trade-off.
  6. Verify the display setup. Check the operating system and in-game refresh-rate settings, then confirm whether VRR is supported and enabled where applicable.

Record the final settings so you can restore them after a game update or driver change. A game update can alter performance or available options, so rerun the comparison if the experience changes noticeably.
