Yes—an old iPhone or Android phone can become a useful gaming device if it still runs the games you want to play. Check the phone’s model and operating-system version, confirm the game supports your phone and a controller, then try a compatible controller you already own before buying accessories. Pairing a controller does not guarantee that every game will accept its input.
Check the phone and games first
Find the phone’s model and OS version in its settings, then compare them with the current requirements for the specific games you want. Also check that there is enough storage to install them. A controller connection cannot make an unsupported game install or run, and there is no universal minimum phone specification that guarantees good performance.

Controller support is implemented by individual games, rather than guaranteed by the phone’s ability to pair a gamepad. Android Developers recommends testing controller input across devices, and Apple notes that controller features vary by controller and app. Choose a game that explicitly supports controllers and test it before investing in a specialized attachment. If you already own a compatible controller, start there. A Bluetooth controller paired with the phone is often the simplest arrangement to try; a wired connection may also work, sometimes with an adapter. Check the phone’s OS, controller compatibility, connector, and the games you plan to play before purchasing anything.

Android: Bluetooth or wired
Google documents both wired and Bluetooth controller connections for Android. To pair over Bluetooth, put the controller in pairing mode, then open Settings → Connected devices → Pair new device and select the controller. Android settings may also let you change button or joystick assignments. See Google’s Android controller setup instructions.
iPhone: Bluetooth or a compatible wired connection
For Bluetooth, put the controller in pairing mode and open Settings → Bluetooth on the iPhone. Apple also documents compatible wired controllers, but an adapter may be needed depending on the iPhone model and controller. Check Apple’s iPhone controller instructions for connection guidance and its controller compatibility information for feature limits.

Reusing a PlayStation or Xbox controller
Some console controllers can connect to phones over Bluetooth, but support depends on the controller and phone. Samsung’s Galaxy guidance covers Bluetooth pairing for Xbox and PlayStation controllers as well as Moga and generic controllers. Sony lists DualSense Bluetooth support from Android 12 and iOS 14.5, while noting that some features—including adaptive triggers and haptics—are not supported on Android mobile devices. Verify the exact controller revision and OS requirements before relying on compatibility: Samsung’s Galaxy controller guidance and Sony’s controller compatibility page.

Choose a comfortable physical setup
You can hold the phone separately and use a standard controller, or use a phone stand or clip to position the screen. A telescopic controller that attaches directly to a phone may be convenient, but check the phone’s dimensions, port placement, case clearance, and the accessory maker’s compatibility list. A gamepad can be compatible electronically yet fail to fit the phone physically.

- Connection: Decide whether Bluetooth or a wired connection suits the phone and controller; check whether a wired setup needs an adapter.
- Compatibility: Confirm the phone’s OS, controller model, and game support independently.
- Fit: For an attached controller, verify dimensions, port access, and room for the phone case.
- Features: Do not assume vibration, triggers, or other controller features work in every game or on every mobile OS.
- Cost: Try a controller you already own before buying a new one or a dedicated phone accessory.
Consider cloud gaming only after checking service requirements
Cloud gaming may be another way to play on a phone, but it is not a guarantee that every old model will work. Samsung describes Xbox cloud gaming on Galaxy phones with a compatible controller. Check the service provider’s current device and network requirements, availability in your country, terms, and game catalog before depending on it. Samsung’s page is Galaxy support for Xbox cloud gaming; it does not establish current availability or eligibility for every phone or region.

A phone can serve as a dedicated gaming device for compatible mobile games, but pairing a controller does not by itself make it equivalent to a console. What it can play depends on the specific phone, OS, game requirements, and controller support. If you are considering a separate or spare phone for this purpose, verify those points—and the physical fit of any attached gamepad—before spending money.
