How to Turn Off Explosions in Minecraft With Commands

Bedrock players can stop TNT from being lit with /gamerule tntexplodes false or disable mob griefing with /gamerule mobgriefing false. Java has no universal explosions-off command established by the cited reference.

There is no single documented command that turns off every explosion in Minecraft. In Bedrock Edition, use /gamerule tntexplodes false to stop TNT from being lit, or /gamerule mobgriefing false to disable mob griefing. Java Edition needs a separate, source-specific answer: the cited Java reference does not document a universal explosions-off command.

Bedrock Edition: choose the command for the explosion source

First identify whether the explosion is from TNT or a mob. These game rules have different scopes and are not interchangeable. Microsoft’s Bedrock /gamerule reference lists both rules and gives the syntax /gamerule <rule> [value].

Stop TNT from being lit

  1. Open chat or the appropriate command interface in the Bedrock world.
  2. Enter /gamerule tntexplodes false.

The tntexplodes rule controls whether TNT blocks can be lit. It is the documented Bedrock option for stopping TNT explosions; it is not a setting for every explosion source.

Disable mob griefing

  1. Open chat or the appropriate command interface.
  2. Enter /gamerule mobgriefing false.

This is a broad mob-griefing setting, not a creeper-only switch. Whether a particular mob’s explosion destroys blocks can depend on that entity’s explosion configuration. Microsoft’s Bedrock explosion-component documentation describes whether block destruction is affected by the mob-griefing rule.

Java Edition: do not use the Bedrock command by assumption

Do not assume /gamerule tntexplodes false is a Java Edition command. The cited Mojang Java Edition 1.21 release notes discuss explosion block interaction and drop-decay behavior, not a universal command to disable all explosions. If you are playing Java, identify the explosion source and the exact behavior you want to change before choosing a command; the cited reference does not establish a general explosions-off switch.

What these commands do—and do not do

  • tntexplodes false is the Bedrock rule for whether TNT blocks can be lit.
  • mobgriefing false disables mob griefing as a broad category; mob explosion block damage can depend on entity configuration.
  • Neither cited reference establishes a universal setting that disables every explosion.
  • If you want explosions to damage entities but not destroy blocks, do not assume either rule provides that exact combination. The cited documentation does not establish a universal configuration for it.

Command access and permissions

The Bedrock command reference lists the permission level as Game Directors and says the command does not require cheats. A multiplayer server or world can still restrict access through its own permissions, so a command may be unavailable to you even when it is documented.
