In current retail World of Warcraft, turn off open-world PvP by switching off War Mode in the Talents interface while your character is at a rest location. If you mean the PvP flag in Classic Hardcore, that is a separate system: Blizzard documents the /pvp command, not the retail War Mode toggle.
Turn off War Mode in retail WoW
- Go to a rest location.
- Open the Talents interface and find the War Mode toggle at the bottom.
- Switch War Mode off.
Blizzard’s New Players Starter Guide: Welcome to World of Warcraft, published February 25, 2026, says War Mode can be deactivated at any rest location. You do not have to go to a capital city to turn it off. If the toggle is unavailable, check that you are at a rest location.
Why the instructions depend on your WoW version
Retail War Mode
War Mode is the retail open-world PvP control. Blizzard’s starter guide says its toggle is available from level 20. For the Normal realm ruleset described in that guide, players cannot attack one another in contested areas unless they turn on War Mode; entering an enemy-faction city can automatically flag a player. The guide says RP realms use the Normal ruleset without open-world PvP, so do not assume the same rules apply to every game mode or realm.
Turning War Mode on has a different location condition from turning it off: Blizzard says you can activate it in a faction or capital city, whereas deactivation is available at any rest location. Historical Blizzard notes likewise described disabling it in a rested area, and Dragonflight 10.0.5 notes listed Valdrakken alongside Orgrimmar and Stormwind as places to enable it; those older notes are not needed for the current off procedure.

Classic Hardcore PvP flag
Classic Hardcore flagging is not controlled by retail’s War Mode toggle. Blizzard’s Rules of Engagement: Classic Hardcore is Coming to World of Warcraft describes typing /pvp to flag yourself and warns that attacking an opposing-faction NPC can also flag you.
That article does not specify how long an existing flag takes to clear after changing it, so it does not establish that a flag disappears immediately. Its instructions concern Classic Hardcore; they should not be treated as universal instructions for every WoW Classic edition.
