How to Turn Off Zombie Respawn on a Project Zomboid Server

Edit the correct server profile’s SandboxVars.lua, set RespawnHours=0, restart the server, and use the stricter multiplier and None-mode settings only when you want broader population changes.

To disable automatic zombie respawn on a dedicated Project Zomboid server, stop the server, open its profile-specific SandboxVars.lua in the Zomboid/Server directory, set RespawnHours = 0, save the file, and restart the server. For a stricter no-replenishment configuration, also set RespawnMultiplier = 0.00. The Indie Stone staff example for completely disabling population respawn additionally uses ZombieRespawn = 4 (None) and PopulationMultiplier = 0.00.

These settings stop future population restoration; they do not delete zombies that already exist, and they do not prevent zombies from walking into an area from elsewhere.

What disabling respawn actually changes

Project Zomboid separates the process of creating replacement zombies from the movement of zombies that already exist. The respawn settings govern when the game restores population in eligible parts of the map. Turning them off stops that restoration process. It does not clear streets, buildings, forests, or cells that already contain zombies.

A group can still appear to “respawn” after the change when it has migrated from a neighboring area. Migration is a separate behavior exposed by the server’s redistribution settings, including redistributeHours. A zombie that walks into a cleared neighborhood was not necessarily created by the respawn system.

Find the correct server configuration file

Standard dedicated-server location

Server sandbox settings are stored under the user profile’s Project Zomboid data directory. On Windows, the usual location is:

%UserProfile%ZomboidServer

Inside that directory, the commonly generated profile is named servertest. Its files normally include:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • servertest.ini, which identifies the server profile.
  • servertest_SandboxVars.lua, which contains sandbox values such as zombie spawning and respawn behavior.

Your profile may have a different name. If the server was created as MyServer, for example, look for MyServer.ini and the matching MyServer_SandboxVars.lua. Edit the sandbox file belonging to the profile that the server actually launches, not an unrelated test profile.

Hosted server panels

A managed host may expose the same files through a file manager, an editor, or an “advanced settings” page. The buttons used to stop and start a server differ by provider, but the safe sequence is the same: stop the instance completely, edit the profile’s sandbox file, save it, and start the instance again. If a panel regenerates configuration from a form, make the change in that form or confirm that the panel will preserve manual edits.

An Indie Stone forum support response from staff member Beard identifies the %UserProfile%ZomboidServer folder as the location for the settings. The important point is the profile association: the file must belong to the server you are running.

Settings that control zombie replenishment

Setting What it controls Value for a no-respawn setup Important qualification
RespawnHours The interval control for population respawn. 0 This is the primary setting for disabling periodic respawn.
RespawnMultiplier The fraction of the desired population restored during a respawn event. 0.00 It removes the replenishment fraction if another respawn path is enabled.
ZombieRespawn The sandbox population-respawn mode. 4 The Indie Stone staff example labels mode 4 as None.
PopulationMultiplier The desired zombie population used by the sandbox. 0.00 in the staff example This is a broad population setting, not merely an interval switch; use it only when you intend that stronger effect.
RespawnUnseenHours How long an area must remain unseen before it can become eligible for respawn. Not required for disabling respawn It controls eligibility for unseen chunks and is separate from migration.

Names and available options can vary with the server build. The current official API exposes the concepts as zombieRespawn, respawnHours, respawnUnseenHours, and respawnMultiplier, while the generated Lua file commonly uses the capitalized keys shown above. Use the spelling and structure already present in the file generated by your installed build.

Recommended configuration choices

Normal no-respawn configuration

For most servers, change the interval and replenishment fraction:

RespawnHours = 0,
RespawnMultiplier = 0.00,

Keep the rest of the sandbox population settings unchanged. This preserves your existing population model while preventing the normal respawn event from restoring zombies.

Strict “None” configuration

The Indie Stone staff example for eliminating population replenishment uses all four of these values:

RespawnHours = 0,
RespawnMultiplier = 0.00,
ZombieRespawn = 4,
PopulationMultiplier = 0.00,

Use this version when the goal is a world in which the server does not replenish the desired population through its configured respawn mode. Because PopulationMultiplier affects the desired population itself, it can have a more sweeping effect than simply setting the interval to zero. Decide whether that is appropriate for your preset before applying it.

What not to change unnecessarily

RespawnUnseenHours is not a substitute for RespawnHours = 0. It determines how long an unseen chunk must remain out of view before becoming eligible; it does not disable the respawn system by itself. Leave it as generated unless you are deliberately tuning unseen-area eligibility.

Step-by-step: disable respawn on a local or self-managed server

  1. Stop the server cleanly. Use the server console or your normal stop command and wait until the process has finished writing its save data. Do not edit the active file while the server is still running.
  2. Make a backup. Copy the relevant *_SandboxVars.lua file to a safe location. A backup lets you restore the previous sandbox if a typo or an overly broad population change produces an unwanted result.
  3. Open the profile’s sandbox file. Go to %UserProfile%ZomboidServer on Windows and open the file whose name matches the profile in use, such as servertest_SandboxVars.lua.
  4. Locate the zombie settings. Search the file for RespawnHours. Also locate RespawnMultiplier, ZombieRespawn, and PopulationMultiplier if they are present in that build’s generated file.
  5. Change the values without changing the file’s syntax. Set RespawnHours to the numeric value 0. For the normal configuration, set RespawnMultiplier to 0.00. For the stricter staff-example configuration, set ZombieRespawn to 4 and PopulationMultiplier to 0.00 as well.
  6. Save the file. Keep the existing commas, braces, capitalization, and quotation style used by the generated Lua file. Do not replace the entire file with an old preset from another game version.
  7. Start the server again. Restart it through the same console or service method you normally use. Sandbox values are loaded at startup; editing the file while the server is running does not apply the new values to the current session.
  8. Confirm that the correct profile was edited. After the restart, stop the server once more if necessary and reopen the file to ensure the values are still present. If a launcher or management panel rewrites the file, apply the settings through that panel or disable its automatic overwrite behavior.

Step-by-step: hosted server workflow

  1. Use the host’s stop control. Wait for the panel to report that the process is stopped rather than merely disconnected from the console.
  2. Open the file manager or configuration editor. Find the server profile directory and identify the matching *_SandboxVars.lua file beside its .ini profile file. The common pair is servertest.ini and servertest_SandboxVars.lua.
  3. Download or copy a backup. Preserve the original file before editing. Some panels offer a download button; otherwise copy the text into a local backup file.
  4. Edit the respawn entries. Set RespawnHours to 0 and, if desired, RespawnMultiplier to 0.00. Apply the two additional staff-example values only if you want the stricter population configuration.
  5. Save and verify the panel’s result. Some hosts require an explicit “Save,” “Apply,” or “Write file” action. Confirm that the saved file still contains the new numbers.
  6. Restart from the panel. Start the server only after the file has been written. The exact labels vary by host, so follow that provider’s normal stop/start workflow.
  7. Check for generated-setting conflicts. If the values revert after every restart, the host may be rebuilding SandboxVars.lua from a preset. In that case, change the corresponding sandbox controls in the host’s game-settings page or ask the host how to preserve manual Lua edits.

Why zombies may still appear after the change

Existing zombies were never removed

Disabling respawn is preventive. Zombies already spawned in the world remain alive until players or game systems remove them. A previously cleared area can therefore still contain stragglers after the restart, especially inside buildings, behind fences, or outside the player’s recent line of travel.

Zombies migrated from another area

Population movement is distinct from respawn. Zombies can travel into a cleared cell from nearby cells, so new sightings do not prove that the respawn interval is active. The server API exposes redistribution separately through redistributeHours. If you want to study this behavior, observe whether the new group is entering from a connected street or neighboring zone rather than appearing throughout the area at once.

The server loaded a different file

A frequent configuration mistake is editing servertest_SandboxVars.lua while the launch command uses another profile. Match the prefix of the .ini file and the sandbox file, and verify that the panel’s selected instance uses that same profile.

The server was not restarted

Sandbox changes are startup settings. Saving the file alone does not reload the running world. Stop the process fully and start it again before judging the result.

A host or launcher overwrote the edit

Managed environments sometimes regenerate configuration files from a control panel. Reopen the file after startup, or compare the saved values with the panel’s displayed settings. If the numbers have reverted, make the change in the panel’s own sandbox controls or use the provider’s documented method for persistent custom files.

An old preset uses different keys or defaults

Project Zomboid settings are version-sensitive. Community instructions written for an older build may show historical defaults or omit a setting that your generated file now contains. Treat the file produced by your exact server build as authoritative: preserve its key names and edit only the values you need.

How to verify the configuration without misreading the result

  • Verify the file: with the server stopped, confirm that RespawnHours is exactly 0, not a quoted string or a value in a different profile.
  • Verify the restart: start the server after saving and make sure it reaches its normal ready state.
  • Verify the scope: decide whether you selected the normal two-setting configuration or the stricter four-setting staff example; do not assume that changing one value also changed the others.
  • Verify the observation: distinguish a survivor finding an old zombie or a migrating group from a population-wide restoration event.
  • Verify persistence: stop the server later and inspect the file again. A panel that silently restores old values needs a different configuration workflow.

There is no need to delete the world or start a new save solely because you changed respawn settings. The change affects future population restoration in the existing world; it does not retroactively clean the map.

Choosing between the two configurations

Goal Values to use Effect and trade-off
Stop normal periodic replenishment while retaining the rest of the preset RespawnHours = 0; RespawnMultiplier = 0.00 Targets the respawn mechanism without changing every population target in the sandbox.
Use the Indie Stone staff example’s strict no-replenishment setup RespawnHours = 0; RespawnMultiplier = 0.00; ZombieRespawn = 4; PopulationMultiplier = 0.00 Disables the respawn mode and sets the desired population multiplier to zero, producing a broader change to population behavior.
Change when an unseen area becomes eligible Adjust RespawnUnseenHours only This changes eligibility timing; it is not a no-respawn switch and does not control migration.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Editing the file while the server is running and assuming the current session has reloaded it.
  • Changing RespawnUnseenHours while leaving RespawnHours enabled, then expecting respawn to stop.
  • Deleting or replacing the whole sandbox file instead of changing the existing entries.
  • Copying a historical preset whose keys do not match the installed build.
  • Assuming that a zombie seen after the restart must have been respawned rather than migrated.
  • Setting PopulationMultiplier = 0.00 without realizing that it is a broad population change rather than just an interval setting.
  • Editing a similarly named profile that the server never launches.

Practical answer to the common questions

If the question is “Do I set RespawnHours to zero?”, yes: RespawnHours = 0 is the primary no-respawn setting. If the question is “Where is SandboxVars.lua?”, look in the server profile directory under %UserProfile%ZomboidServer, usually in a file such as servertest_SandboxVars.lua beside servertest.ini. If the question is “Why are zombies still appearing?”, first separate surviving zombies and migration from actual population restoration, then confirm that the right profile was edited and the server was restarted.

For a conservative change, use the two-setting configuration. For the strongest no-replenishment interpretation documented by Indie Stone staff, use the four values in the strict configuration and accept that the population multiplier changes the sandbox more broadly.
