The fastest way to turn on a gaming keyboard’s backlight is to find the key marked with a sun, illuminated keyboard, or backlight icon, then press it—or press Fn plus that key. Press the shortcut repeatedly to cycle through brightness levels or lighting effects. The exact control depends on the keyboard model, and some gaming keyboards have no backlight at all.

First, check whether the keyboard has backlighting

A gaming keyboard is not automatically a backlit keyboard. Check the keycaps, product box, model number, or official manual for terms such as backlit, RGB, per-key RGB, or single-zone lighting.

  • Backlit: The keys illuminate in white or one color.
  • RGB: The keyboard supports multiple colors and usually effects such as waves or breathing.
  • LED indicators: Small Caps Lock, Num Lock, or Game Mode lights do not mean the keys are backlit.
  • Non-backlit: No shortcut or software can add lighting that the hardware does not contain.

Look especially at the top-row function keys, Spacebar, arrow keys, and the area near the upper-right corner. On supported Lenovo laptops, the backlight icon is commonly on the Spacebar or Esc key. Lenovo recommends checking the exact model’s documentation if no backlight icon is present. Lenovo’s backlight guide explains how to identify compatible systems.

Turn on the light with the keyboard shortcut

  1. Find the key showing a sun, glowing keyboard, or illuminated-key symbol.
  2. Press that key by itself once.
  3. If nothing happens, hold Fn and press the same key.
  4. Press the combination repeatedly to cycle between off, dim, brighter, and—on RGB models—different effects.

Some keyboards use function-key lock or “hotkey mode.” If Fn + F7 does nothing, try F7 alone; if the function key performs its normal action instead, try holding Fn. The symbol, not the function-key number, is the reliable clue.

Common shortcuts by brand and model

These are verified examples, not universal brand-wide commands. Shortcuts can vary between models, regions, and laptop generations.

Brand or model family Lighting control What it does
Logitech Pro Gaming Keyboard Dedicated backlight key above Pause Turns the backlight on or off. Logitech documents it separately from Game Mode. Support page
Logitech G413, G512, G513 Fn + F7 Cycles through five preset brightness levels. Logitech instructions
Supported Lenovo laptops Fn + Spacebar or Fn + Esc Changes the backlight mode, depending on the model. Lenovo instructions
ASUS notebooks Often Fn + F7, Fn + F4, or Fn + Up/Down Raises, lowers, or disables the backlight, depending on the notebook. ASUS support
SteelSeries keyboards Hold the SteelSeries key and use the illumination control Adjusts brightness; the exact key varies by model. SteelSeries guide

Corsair keyboards commonly use onboard controls or Corsair iCUE for lighting configuration.

External gaming keyboard or gaming laptop?

External USB or wireless keyboard

  1. Connect a wired keyboard directly to the computer rather than through an unpowered hub.
  2. For a wireless keyboard, turn it on and charge it or replace its batteries.
  3. Use the backlight key or the documented Fn combination.
  4. Try another USB port if the keyboard works but the light remains off.
  5. Open the manufacturer’s software and check the active lighting profile.

Some external keyboards keep lighting disabled until a profile or effect is selected. Wireless models may also reduce or disable lighting to preserve battery life.

Built-in gaming laptop keyboard

Laptop lighting is model-specific. Try the icon-marked shortcut first, then check the laptop maker’s utility or support page. ASUS may use Armoury Crate, Lenovo uses model-specific controls, and HP OMEN systems may manage lighting through OMEN Gaming Hub. Dell also notes that backlight controls and BIOS options vary by notebook model; see its backlight troubleshooting guide.

Use Windows 11 Dynamic Lighting

Compatible RGB and LED devices can sometimes be controlled through Windows 11 without relying entirely on a vendor utility:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Personalization.
  3. Select Dynamic lighting.
  4. Turn on Use Dynamic Lighting on my devices.
  5. Select the keyboard’s device card.
  6. Adjust Brightness, Effects, and color options.

This feature works only with compatible devices and Windows 11. If the keyboard does not appear, it may be unsupported, disconnected, missing a suitable driver, or controlled by another application. Microsoft also provides details about device support and background light-control priority.

Windows Dynamic Lighting and manufacturer software can compete for control. Logitech says LIGHTSYNC cannot be configured in G HUB while Dynamic Lighting is enabled in some configurations. To use G HUB’s full controls, disable Dynamic Lighting and then configure the keyboard in G HUB. Logitech explains the conflict here.

Turn on RGB effects with the manufacturer’s software

Logitech G HUB

  1. Open G HUB.
  2. Select the keyboard.
  3. Open LIGHTSYNC.
  4. Choose a lighting effect or animation and apply the profile.

Available options depend on whether the keyboard has RGB or only single-color illumination. Logitech’s LIGHTSYNC guide describes the effect controls.

  • 10-zone RGB illumination – Gorgeous color schemes and reactive effects
  • Whisper quiet gaming switches – Nearly silent use for 20 million low friction keypresses

  • Dedicated multimedia controls – Adjust volume and settings on the fly

Corsair iCUE

  1. Open iCUE and select the keyboard.
  2. Open Lighting Effects.
  3. Click + under Lighting Layers.
  4. Choose a preset or custom effect and adjust the affected keys or zones.

The exact labels can vary between iCUE releases. Corsair’s guide covers iCUE 4 and newer, including interface notes for newer iCUE 5 releases.

SteelSeries GG

Open SteelSeries GG and use Engine for the detected keyboard. Select its illumination settings or profile. Because the hardware shortcut differs by model, use the keyboard’s product guide rather than assuming one SteelSeries combination works everywhere.

ASUS, Lenovo, and HP

Use Armoury Crate for supported ASUS laptops, the model-specific Lenovo utility or support instructions for Lenovo systems, and OMEN Gaming Hub for compatible HP OMEN systems. Basic brightness changes may work through the keyboard shortcut without the utility; advanced colors, zones, profiles, and game effects may require it.

If the gaming keyboard will not light up

Work through these checks in order:

  1. Identify the exact model. Look on the keyboard’s underside, laptop chassis, packaging, or original order.
  2. Confirm lighting hardware. Check the official product page or manual for “backlit,” “RGB,” or similar wording.
  3. Check brightness. Cycle the lighting shortcut several times; the current level may be zero.
  4. Check power. Use a direct USB connection, a different port, or a charged wireless battery.
  5. Check the profile. The active onboard or game profile may have lighting disabled.
  6. Try the other shortcut mode. Test the lighting key alone and with Fn; function-lock settings can change the result.
  7. Use the official utility. Confirm that the application detects the keyboard and shows a lighting preview.
  8. Close competing RGB software. Use one primary controller at a time, or adjust the priority settings in Windows Dynamic Lighting.
  9. Test another computer. This helps separate a keyboard problem from a Windows, driver, or software problem.
  10. Update carefully. Install drivers, firmware, and utilities only from the keyboard or laptop manufacturer.
  11. Reset the keyboard if necessary. Follow the exact reset procedure in its manual.

If typing works but the lights do not, the lighting controller, profile, firmware, power-saving mode, or LEDs may be the problem. Do not conclude that the hardware has failed until the model’s lighting support and software controls have been checked.

Why the light turns off after startup or inactivity

A keyboard that lights briefly and then goes dark may be using a battery-saving timeout, laptop inactivity setting, sleep or lock-state policy, or a profile that disables illumination. Check the vendor utility, power settings, and model manual. These settings are not standardized across brands.

Lighting behavior can also change after a Windows or G HUB update. Logitech documents cases where Dynamic Lighting becomes enabled and takes control after an update. Recheck Settings → Personalization → Dynamic lighting, then return control to the manufacturer’s utility if that is where you want to manage effects.

Hardware shortcut or software: which should you use?

Method Best for Limitations
Keyboard shortcut Quickly turning lighting on, off, or brighter Controls may be limited and vary by model
Manufacturer software RGB effects, zones, profiles, macros, and onboard settings Requires installation and may run in the background
Windows Dynamic Lighting Basic centralized control on compatible Windows 11 devices Not supported by every keyboard and may conflict with vendor software

The most reliable final step is to search the manufacturer’s support site using the exact model number. A gaming label, Game Mode key, or status LED is not proof that the keyboard has illuminated keys.

Why does Fn + Spacebar not work?

That shortcut is associated with supported Lenovo systems, not every gaming keyboard. Check your exact model’s backlight icon and manual instead.

How do I know whether my keyboard is RGB or only backlit?

Check the official product page or manual. Terms such as RGB, per-key RGB, and customizable zones indicate color control; backlit or single-color indicates illumination without full RGB control.

Can Windows 11 control my RGB keyboard?

Only if the keyboard is compatible with Windows Dynamic Lighting. Open Settings → Personalization → Dynamic lighting and check whether the device appears.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why does my keyboard work but stay dark?

Check brightness, the active profile, power or battery level, software conflicts, and whether the exact model actually includes backlighting.

What if the keyboard has no light icon?

Check the model number and official manual. If the product documentation does not list backlighting, the keyboard may not contain lighting hardware.

The Bottom Line

Find the backlight icon, try the key alone and then with Fn, and cycle through its brightness levels. If that fails, verify the exact model’s lighting support and use its official utility—Windows 11 Dynamic Lighting works only with compatible devices.
