Which kind of tooltip do you want?
- Item name: Hover over an inventory item, or focus on it using your controls. This basic label is distinct from advanced tooltips.
- Technical item details: In Java Edition, advanced tooltips can add information such as an item’s ID and exact remaining durability.
Turn on advanced tooltips in Java Edition
- Enter a Java Edition world or server and begin playing.
- Press F3+H.
- Look at an item in your inventory to see whether its advanced details are displayed.
This is a toggle: press F3+H again to change the setting back. The shortcut and examples of added information are described in the Minecraft tooltip reference.

What to expect in Bedrock Edition
Do not assume that Java’s F3+H shortcut works in Bedrock. A June 17, 2025 Minecraft Feedback request asked for Java-style tooltips in Bedrock. A request is not release documentation, and the available sources do not settle the feature’s status across every Bedrock platform or build. Check the controls and options for your own platform and version rather than relying on a Java shortcut.
If F3+H does not work
- Check your edition: The shortcut is documented for Java Edition; the available sources do not establish it as a Bedrock control.
- Try the function-row modifier: On some keyboards, you may need to hold Fn or change the keyboard’s function-lock setting for the F3 key to register. This depends on the keyboard.
- Confirm what you want to see: If you only need an item’s name, hover over or focus on it; F3+H toggles the additional technical information.
- Turn the extra details off: If advanced information is already showing, press F3+H again.
Minecraft’s official controls guide covers mouse-and-keyboard, gamepad, and touchscreen input and notes that controls can be customized in the options menu. It does not give a Bedrock replacement for F3+H.

Why displayed details can vary
Tooltip fields are not necessarily identical in every version. The official Java Edition 1.20.5 notes mention advanced tooltips enabled with F3+H and specify that a displayed number became the number of components rather than tags in that release. Treat that as a version-specific change, not a guarantee that every tooltip always shows the same fields.
