How to Uninstall Coolify From Your Server Cleanly

By VGSources Team 10 min read

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To uninstall Coolify cleanly, back up the instance and copy /data/coolify/source/.env somewhere off the server first. Then remove the Coolify control-plane containers, remove its proxy only if you have replacement routing, delete the dedicated volumes and network when no workloads need them, and remove /data/coolify last. Do not confuse removing Coolify with deleting your applications, the Docker host, or the provider machine: each is a separate action with different consequences.

What a Coolify uninstall actually removes

Coolify is a control plane that stores configuration and coordinates deployments. Docker on the connected server runs your application, database, and service containers. Because those layers are separate, “uninstalling Coolify” can mean anything from deleting a local command to destroying the entire machine.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Removal scope What changes What remains Main risk
CLI only The local coolify command and, optionally, its local context file are removed. The Coolify instance, Docker, containers, volumes, and server files. None to the server; you can only lose local CLI contexts if you delete them.
Coolify control plane Coolify containers, database, Redis data, files, and optionally images are removed. Workload containers and their data unless you explicitly delete them. Loss of control-plane configuration and inability to manage workloads through Coolify.
Coolify Proxy Coolify-managed domain and TLS routing stops. Application, database, and service containers can continue running. Public domains may fail until another proxy routes traffic and handles certificates.
Server record The server entry is removed from Coolify’s database. The Linux host, Docker installation, files, containers, and volumes. False confidence that the machine has been cleaned.
Managed resources Applications, databases, and services selected in Coolify are deleted. Anything not selected. Destruction of workload data and volumes.
Provider machine The linked VPS or cloud instance is destroyed through the provider workflow. Nothing on that machine. Irreversible loss of every remaining resource and possible billing or DNS disruption.

The procedure below covers a full Coolify control-plane cleanup while deliberately leaving workload containers and their data alone. Stop before any step whose scope you do not intend.

Back up everything that must survive

Do this preparation while the server is still intact. A Coolify instance backup contains the Coolify database, not the deployed applications, databases, services, or Docker volumes. Treat it as a control-plane backup, not a complete server backup.

Confirm a safe maintenance window

  • Check that no deployment, migration, or backup job is running.
  • Connect to the server over SSH with an account that can run Docker commands and remove files under /data.
  • Identify every application, database, and service that must remain available after Coolify is gone.
  • Decide how those workloads will be operated afterward: direct Docker commands, another control plane, or migration to another host.

Create and export the Coolify instance backup

Create an instance backup from the Coolify interface, then copy the resulting backup off the server. Keep at least one copy on storage that is independent of the VPS. A backup left under /data/coolify will be destroyed by the final cleanup command.

Save the encryption key

Copy /data/coolify/source/.env outside the server as a separate file. It contains the encryption key required to restore the instance backup. Protect this file like a secret; possession of the database backup without the matching key may not be enough to restore encrypted values.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Export workload-specific files

Review /data/coolify for deployment files, application configuration, local backups, and proxy-related configuration that you intend to retain. Copy or migrate those items before deleting the directory. Also make independent backups of application data, database data, and service volumes because the Coolify instance backup does not include them.

Plan replacement traffic handling

If users reach an application through a Coolify-managed domain, document its DNS records, upstream port, and TLS requirements. Removing the Coolify Proxy removes the domain and certificate routing it provides. Arrange a replacement reverse proxy and certificate management before taking that proxy away, or expect the domains to stop working even while containers remain healthy.

Choose the correct removal path

Use the narrowest path that meets your goal. Removing only the CLI is appropriate when you no longer want to issue commands from your workstation. Removing the control plane is appropriate when Docker workloads will be managed independently. Deleting the server record is an administrative change, not host cleanup. Deleting the provider machine is a separate, destructive teardown.

Your goal Actions to take Do not do
Stop using the local CLI Remove the binary and optionally its local configuration file. Do not delete server containers or files.
Remove Coolify but keep workloads Back up, remove control-plane containers, decide on the proxy, remove dedicated volumes, network, files, and selected images. Do not run broad volume cleanup or delete workload containers.
Remove the Coolify entry only Delete the server record in Coolify. Do not assume Docker, files, or applications were removed.
Retire the entire host Back up or migrate workloads, then use the provider’s machine-deletion workflow. Do not enable “delete all resources” until every remaining resource can be destroyed.

Step-by-step: remove the Coolify control plane over SSH

1. Remove the standard Coolify containers

Run this on the Coolify server after verifying your backups:

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
docker rm -f coolify coolify-db coolify-redis coolify-sentinel

The command force-removes the Coolify application, its database container, Redis, and Sentinel. It does not remove application, database, or service containers that Coolify deployed. Older installations that used the pre-Reverb architecture may also have a realtime container:

docker rm -f coolify-realtime

If Docker reports that a named container does not exist, that usually means the installation uses a different architecture or the container was already removed. Confirm the remaining names with docker ps -a rather than deleting unrelated containers.

2. Remove the Coolify Proxy in the mode it uses

For a standalone Docker installation, remove the proxy container:

docker rm -f coolify-proxy

For Docker Swarm, run the removal on a manager node:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
docker stack rm coolify-proxy

This step stops the domains and TLS routing supplied by the Coolify Proxy. Containers may still be listening on their internal or published Docker ports, but domain-based access will not work until another proxy is configured. If you need uninterrupted public traffic, migrate routing first and postpone this step.

3. Remove only the dedicated Coolify volumes

After confirming that the backup and encryption key are off-server, remove the named control-plane volumes:

docker volume rm coolify-db coolify-redis

Do not substitute docker volume prune. A prune operation evaluates all unused Docker volumes and can delete volumes belonging to unrelated workloads. If a volume name is shared or contains workload data, stop and identify its owner instead of assuming it is safe.

4. Decide whether to remove the coolify network

Inspect which containers still use the network:

docker network inspect coolify

If remaining application or service containers are attached to it, connect them to a replacement network before removing it. If you intentionally want to keep the existing network for those workloads, leave it in place. When no workload needs it, remove it:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
docker network rm coolify

Removing a network that still has attached containers fails rather than silently disconnecting them. That failure is useful: migrate or disconnect the listed containers first, then retry.

5. Delete Coolify files last

Only after checking the off-server backup, the saved .env, workload exports, and any files that must survive should you remove the data directory:

rm -rf /data/coolify

This deletes the instance encryption-key file, local instance backups, deployment files, and configuration stored under /data/coolify. The deletion cannot be undone. Verify the path carefully before pressing Enter; a typo in a recursive removal command can target an unintended directory.

6. Remove Coolify-related images only if desired

Image tags differ between installations. List the images actually present:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
docker images

Then remove only images that are dedicated to the Coolify installation and whose exact repository and tag appear in that output. Depending on the installation, documentation examples include Coolify, helper, Sentinel, PostgreSQL, Redis, Traefik, Caddy, and legacy realtime images. PostgreSQL, Redis, or proxy images may also be used by another workload, so never delete them solely because the repository name looks familiar. Use the exact tag shown by the host; do not assume latest or a particular version.

Verify what remains

Run the following checks after the selected cleanup steps:

docker ps -a --format '{{.Names}}' | grep -E '^(coolify|coolify-db|coolify-redis|coolify-realtime|coolify-sentinel|coolify-proxy)(_|$)' || true

No matching control-plane container names should be returned. Workload containers may still appear in docker ps -a; that is expected when you chose to preserve them.

docker volume inspect coolify-db coolify-redis

The inspection should report that those named volumes do not exist. If Docker returns an error for a missing volume, record it as confirmation and make sure you did not accidentally inspect a similarly named workload volume.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
test ! -d /data/coolify && echo "Coolify data directory removed"

Finally, test each retained workload by its intended access method. Check container health and logs, confirm published ports, and test the replacement proxy and TLS certificates if you removed coolify-proxy. A running container alone does not prove that DNS, routing, certificates, or dependent networks are working.

What happens to deployed applications and databases?

Removing the control-plane containers does not automatically stop or delete application, database, and service containers. They can continue running under Docker, but Coolify no longer supplies deployment orchestration, environment-management screens, scheduled operations, or its proxy routing. You become responsible for restarts, updates, logs, backups, network membership, secrets, and database administration.

Removing the proxy is the important availability boundary. A workload can be healthy on its Docker port while its public hostname fails because the reverse proxy and TLS certificate path disappeared. Before removal, record each hostname-to-container route and establish an alternate proxy or direct access method.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Deleting /data/coolify removes Coolify’s deployment and configuration files, but it is not a substitute for deleting workload volumes. Conversely, deleting a workload container or volume is not required to remove the control plane. Keep those decisions separate so that a clean uninstall does not become accidental application-data loss.

Deleting a Coolify server record is not host cleanup

Coolify’s server-removal workflow has separate scopes. Deleting only the server from Coolify removes its record from the Coolify database; the Linux machine, Docker installation, containers, and files remain. The machine can be cleaned or repurposed manually afterward.

A separate “delete all resources” choice asks Coolify to delete every managed application, database, and service on that server. Review each resource first, migrate anything you need, and update DNS before enabling that option.

An additional provider-machine option can request deletion of a linked VPS or cloud instance, including machines supplied through providers such as Hetzner, Vultr, or DigitalOcean. Treat that as final host destruction: every remaining container, volume, file, and backup on the machine becomes unavailable. Check provider billing, automatic renewal, snapshots, and DNS before confirming.

If you only want to uninstall the Coolify CLI

The local CLI is independent of the server instance. Removing it does not touch Coolify, Docker, applications, databases, or volumes.

Global Linux or macOS installation

sudo rm /usr/local/bin/coolify

User-local installation

rm ~/.local/bin/coolify

Open a new terminal and run:

coolify version

The shell should report that the command is not recognized. If it still runs, locate the executable:

command -v coolify

Remove the binary through the installation method that owns that path. In PowerShell, use Get-Command coolify to find the executable.

Troubleshooting and recovery decisions

A container removal says the name is unknown

List all containers with docker ps -a --format '{{.Names}}'. The installation may use the legacy realtime container, a different proxy mode, or a customized name. Remove only names you can positively identify as Coolify control-plane components.

The network cannot be removed

docker network rm coolify refuses to remove an attached network. Inspect it, move retained containers to a replacement network, and retry. Leaving the network in place is safe when you intentionally continue using it.

Domains stopped resolving after uninstall

Check whether the Coolify Proxy was removed. If containers are healthy, the likely missing layer is reverse-proxy routing or TLS termination. Restore a replacement proxy, point DNS to it, and recreate certificates before declaring the application unavailable.

A restore cannot decrypt the instance backup

Locate the separately saved /data/coolify/source/.env from the original server. Its encryption key is required for restoring encrypted values in the Coolify instance backup. Do not assume a newly generated key will decrypt the old backup.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You removed the server record too early

The record deletion alone does not erase the host. SSH to the machine directly, inventory Docker containers, volumes, networks, and /data/coolify, then choose whether to perform the controlled cleanup above or migrate the workloads. If the provider machine was also deleted, recovery depends on an off-server backup or provider snapshot.

Post-uninstall operating checklist

  • Store the Coolify instance backup and matching encryption-key file outside the server.
  • Keep independent backups for application data, databases, services, and Docker volumes.
  • Document how each retained container starts after a reboot.
  • Assign ownership for logs, updates, secrets, database maintenance, and monitoring now that Coolify is absent.
  • Confirm DNS records and TLS renewal through the replacement proxy.
  • Remove stale DNS entries, SSH keys, API tokens, and provider snapshots only after verifying they are no longer needed.
  • Review provider billing and automatic-renewal settings if the machine or its server record was retired.

A clean uninstall is complete when the intended Coolify scope is gone, retained workloads are reachable through their planned path, and every recovery artifact is stored somewhere the removed server cannot destroy.
