For ordinary survival lighting, craft a normal torch by placing coal or charcoal above a stick in the crafting grid. Soul torches add a dim blue flame and repel piglins, while redstone torches are primarily signal components for circuits rather than room lights. Placement depends on your goal: a 26-block interval is a resource-saving pattern for a straight mine, whereas roughly 14 blocks is a more cautious spacing for spawn-proofing.

These three items look related but solve different problems. Choose the ordinary torch when you need inexpensive, dependable illumination. Choose a soul torch for Nether corridors, piglin deterrence and a blue-flame visual theme. Choose a redstone torch when the important output is a powered or inverted signal.

The light-level figures describe gameplay illumination. Bedrock’s Vibrant Visuals system can also assign point-light colors to these blocks, but those visual defaults should not be treated as a universal change to gameplay light levels.
How to craft a normal torch
The normal torch is the early-game workhorse because it uses two materials that are easy to stock while mining or collecting wood. Coal and charcoal are interchangeable for this recipe.

- Open your inventory crafting grid or a crafting table.
- Place one stick in a slot.
- Place coal or charcoal directly above the stick in the same column.
- Take the resulting ordinary torch items from the output slot.
The recipe does not require a furnace, Nether material or redstone. Before a long cave trip, make extra sticks and bring enough coal or charcoal that you can mark branches as you explore. The Minecraft Education Educator Guide presents the same basic task under the lesson heading “HOW DO I LIGHT UP A ROOM?”, with the recipe shown in the crafting interface.
Use the recipe book when the grid does not recognize it
Recipe presentation can differ between Java, Bedrock and Education interfaces. If the ingredients are in your inventory but the output does not appear, open the recipe book for your edition, verify that the stick and coal or charcoal are in the same vertical arrangement, and check that you are using a regular stick rather than a similarly named item.
How to craft and use a soul torch
A soul torch combines the normal torch ingredients with a Nether-associated block. Arrange coal or charcoal, a stick and either soul sand or soul soil in the crafting interface according to your edition’s recipe-book layout. The result is a soul torch.
Soul torches emit light level 10, so they are visibly dimmer than ordinary torches. That lower output is useful when you want a restrained blue flame instead of a brightly lit room. It also matters in practical builds: a corridor lit only with soul torches can retain dark areas that a normal-torch corridor would not.
Why soul torches are valuable in the Nether
- Piglin deterrence: Soul torches repel piglins, making them useful around Nether passages and work areas where you want additional distance from those mobs.
- Visual identity: Their blue flame gives a strong contrast against Nether terrain and works well for ice-themed, soul-themed or other cool-color builds.
- Material planning: You must bring or obtain soul sand or soul soil as well as the coal or charcoal and sticks used for an ordinary torch.
For a Nether base where you need to see workstations, storage labels or hazards clearly, combine soul torches with brighter lighting rather than treating the blue flames as a complete replacement for ordinary torches.

What a redstone torch does
A redstone torch is a circuit component first and a light source second. Microsoft’s Bedrock redstone guidance states that you can power most redstone devices, including a redstone lamp, by putting a redstone torch on an adjacent block. The same guidance warns that putting the torch on the lamp itself will not power it.

The block supporting a redstone torch is part of the circuit. Powering that attachment block can deactivate the torch, which is the basis of a torch inverter: an unpowered input leaves the torch on, while a powered input switches it off. This lets you build compact logic, alternating signals and control lines for mechanisms.
When a redstone lamp stays dark, first check whether the torch is adjacent to the lamp or incorrectly placed on the lamp’s own face. Then inspect the block holding the torch. A powered attachment block can intentionally or accidentally turn the torch off.
Why not use redstone torches for a room?
Redstone torches are poor substitutes for a normal torch network. Their useful feature is signal behavior, not efficient general illumination. Keep ordinary torches for mine lighting and room safety; reserve redstone torches for circuits where their on/off state carries information.
How Minecraft torch light falls off
A normal torch has light level 14, and the gameplay-tips guidance describes light dropping by one level per block. Distance alone is not the only concern: walls, turns, ceilings, furniture and changes in elevation can leave a nearby pocket darker than a straight-line measurement suggests.

This falloff explains why two spacing rules are both useful. A long, straight mine can use a wide interval to conserve materials, while a spawn-proofed base needs a more conservative interval that accounts for uneven geometry.
Placement for bases and rooms
For a house, storage room or workshop, place the first lights to eliminate obvious dark pockets rather than trying to follow a rigid geometric pattern. After the main floor is lit, inspect the places players commonly miss.
- Put lights near all four corners of a room and along long walls.
- Check the space behind furniture, chests, pillars and decorative blocks.
- Light stairwells, ladder shafts and the underside of balcony edges.
- Inspect ceiling transitions, roof overhangs and rooms connected by short corridors.
- Walk the perimeter at night or after lowering your screen brightness; a dark patch is easier to notice from inside the build than from a plan.
Irregular rooms need more lights than a flat rectangle with the same floor area. A torch that looks central may leave the far side of a column, alcove or split-level floor outside the useful range.
Mining layouts: the 26-block resource-saving pattern
The gameplay-tips tutorial gives a practical mining pattern of placing torches every 26 blocks along a floor in a straight run. With a torch at each end of that interval, the midpoint is about 13 blocks from either light, so the light does not fall to zero in the unobstructed center of the run.
- Place a torch at the start of the main tunnel.
- Count 26 floor blocks along the straight section.
- Place the next torch and repeat while the tunnel remains straight and open.
- At every branch, bend, room, staircase or change in height, restart your spacing check instead of continuing the count blindly.
This is a material-saving visibility pattern, not a guarantee that every side tunnel is safe. A side passage can be dark even when the main corridor is evenly lit. Place a marker at intersections so you can tell explored branches from unvisited ones, then light the branch itself as you enter.

When to tighten mining spacing
- Intersections: A single torch may illuminate the main axis but leave the mouths of two branches dark.
- Vertical shafts: Light levels change with distance in three dimensions, so a floor pattern does not automatically cover a high ceiling or a deep drop.
- Uneven cave walls: A protruding block can hide a pocket that would be visible in a perfectly straight tunnel.
- Combat or retreat routes: Use more lights where you need to identify a threat quickly or run back to safety.
Spawn-proofing: why roughly 14 blocks is different
The spawn-proofing guidance gives about 14 blocks as an efficient distance to the next torch when the aim is to prevent zero-light gaps. This tighter pattern leaves less room for dark pockets caused by corners, ledges and imperfect counting. Use it in bases, around entrances and in areas where hostile-mob control matters more than saving every torch.
Do not interpret “14 blocks” as a universal guarantee for every version, dimension or terrain shape. Treat it as a practical starting interval, then inspect the actual floor and surrounding blocks. Tighten the spacing around intersections, stairwells, doorways, cliffs and decorative structures.
Torches do not prevent every kind of spawn
Torches address mobs whose spawning is limited by low light, but they are not a universal spawn-control method. The spawn-proofing tutorial specifically lists slimes, magma cubes and hoglins as examples whose spawning does not rely on low light in the same way. If one of those mobs remains a problem, changing torch placement alone will not solve it.
For a reliable spawn-control plan, separate two checks: first, remove low-light spaces with appropriate lighting; second, identify mobs whose rules require different measures. Also inspect caves, roofs, ledges and nearby platforms outside the room you are protecting, because a well-lit interior can still receive threats from an unlit adjacent area.

Nether paths benefit from a deliberate combination of function and theme. Soul torches provide the blue visual language and repel piglins, but their light level 10 means that a corridor lit only by them can be dimmer than expected.

- Use soul torches at entrances, route markers and locations where their piglin-deterrent behavior is useful.
- Add ordinary torches or other brighter light sources at workstations, storage areas, stairs and combat chokepoints.
- Place lights on both sides of turns and at changes in elevation so the blue flame does not hide a dark pocket.
- Mark portals and intersections consistently; visual color helps navigation, but it does not replace a clear route system.
In a decorative build, the dimmer output may be intentional. In a working base, judge the result by what you can see around hazards and by whether hostile-mob rules for the specific location require more than the available lighting.
Redstone torch troubleshooting
The lamp is not turning on
- Confirm the redstone torch is on a block adjacent to the device you want to power.
- If it is sitting directly on the lamp, move it to a neighboring block; the Bedrock guidance says that placement does not power the lamp.
- Look at the block supporting the torch. Powering that block can deactivate the torch.
- Check for a broken dust line, repeater state or another powered component that is intentionally changing the signal.
The circuit behaves backwards
A redstone torch naturally lends itself to inversion. If a mechanism is on when you expect it to be off, trace whether the torch is receiving power through its attachment block. In a compact build, label the input and output sides before changing blocks; moving the torch without understanding the attachment can alter the entire timing or logic pattern.
Visual appearance and edition differences
Microsoft’s Vibrant Visuals documentation identifies minecraft:torch, minecraft:redstone_torch and minecraft:soul_torch as point-light blocks with different default colors: warm cream for a normal torch, red for a redstone torch and cyan for a soul torch.
Those colors are defaults for Bedrock’s Vibrant Visuals presentation. They describe how the lighting system renders the blocks, not a blanket change to their gameplay light levels or redstone behavior. If your world uses a different graphics mode or edition, the appearance can differ while the item mechanics remain governed by that edition’s rules.
A practical torch checklist
Before leaving for a cave
- Craft a reserve of ordinary torches using coal or charcoal and sticks.
- Carry spare sticks so newly collected coal can be converted into more markers during the trip.
- Decide whether your route needs the 26-block mining pattern or the tighter spawn-proofing approach.
- Plan a marking convention for intersections so torches communicate direction, not just brightness.
After lighting a build
- Walk every corner, alcove, stairwell and ceiling transition.
- Check behind large decorative blocks and under overhangs.
- Look outside the walls, on roofs and in nearby caves if mobs are still appearing.
- Use soul torches for color and piglin deterrence, but add brighter lights where visibility is critical.
- Keep redstone torches on circuits unless their signal function is specifically part of the design.

In short, normal torches are your dependable survival default, soul torches are a specialized Nether and visual tool, and redstone torches belong in wiring diagrams. Match the item and spacing pattern to the problem you are actually solving, then inspect the dark corners and neighboring terrain that a simple block count cannot reveal.
