To unlock Borderlands 4’s Ultimate Vault Hunter (UVH) ranks, finish the campaign and four introductory missions for UVH 1, then clear each rank’s challenges and Lilith’s Wildcard Mission for UVH 2–5. UVHM 6 was added later, but the official update notes reviewed here do not specify its unlock requirement. UVHM 7 requires a Platinum time on the Subjugator and Thol mission in UVHM 6.
Before you start
Complete the main campaign first. Once UVHM is unlocked, open Session Settings to enable it and select an available rank. For ranks 2–5, complete the required challenges while playing at the highest UVH rank you have unlocked.

The rank-specific challenge and mission sequence below is documented in PC Gamer’s September 30, 2025 guide. Gearbox’s later official update notes confirm additions to the system, but do not reproduce that full sequence.
Unlock UVH 1
After the campaign, complete these four introductory missions:

Unlock UVH 2–5
For each rank, complete its listed challenges at your highest unlocked rank, then return to Lilith and finish the associated Wildcard Mission.
UVH 2
- Song’s Over — Bramlesong
- Bio Break — Bio-Bulkhead
- Omega 86’d — the Bio Armoured Thresher at the end of the One Gassy Issue side mission
- No Points Awarded — Sydney Pointylegs
Then speak to Lilith and complete Rush The Gate.
UVH 3
- Now Who’s Gonna Watch This Core — Core Observer
- Pelted — Shadowpelt
- So I Felt Like — Rocken Roller
- Blasted Furnace — Frank the Furnace
Return to Lilith and complete His Vile Sanctum.
UVH 4
- Draggin’ Wagon — Battle Wagon
- But What If…You Were the Fake? — Mimicron
- Who Named This Guy — The Immortal Boneface
- Bloom Boom — Skull Orchid
Return to Lilith and complete Her Flaming Vision.
UVH 5
Complete all three Primordial Vault challenges:
- The Inception — Fadefields
- The Origin — Terminus Range
- The Base — Carcadia Burn
Then return to Lilith and complete the The Timekeeper’s Order Wildcard Mission.

What is known about UVHM 6 and UVHM 7?
UVHM 6
Gearbox’s December 2025 update notes confirm that UVHM 6 was added with a new UVHM challenge and Skillcraft firmware. Those notes do not identify the challenge or state the exact rank-up requirement. Check the current in-game challenge menu for the requirement rather than relying on an unconfirmed condition.
UVHM 7
Gearbox’s Version 1.7 notes say to complete the Subjugator and Thol mission in UVHM 6; the accompanying announcement specifies that the run must earn a Platinum time. Version 1.7 added UVHM 7.

UVHM and True Mode are different settings
True Mode is a separate post-campaign option in Session Settings; it is not UVHM 6 or UVHM 7. Gearbox says it scales enemies as if the player were in a four-player party and works independently of Ultimate Vault Hunter Mode. Higher UVH levels, meanwhile, increase dedicated loot drop levels and the chance for dedicated loot to drop, according to Gearbox’s January 2026 update.
