To unlock Mercenary in Risk of Rain 2, complete the True Respite challenge: loop the run, enter a Celestial Portal on a third-stage variant, reach the Obelisk in A Moment, Fractured, and choose to obliterate yourself.
How to complete the True Respite challenge
- Loop the run. Continue through the stages until the run returns to the first environment set. After looping, the Celestial Portal appears on a third-stage variant, according to the True Respite challenge reference.
- Finish the teleporter event and take the Celestial Portal. Once the event is complete, enter the Celestial Portal rather than continuing along the ordinary teleporter route. It leads to the hidden realm A Moment, Fractured.
- Cross the floating islands to the Obelisk. Continue through the realm until you reach the final floating island, where the Obelisk is located.
- Choose to obliterate. Interact with the Obelisk and select the option to obliterate yourself. That completes True Respite and unlocks Mercenary. The challenge is listed as “Obliterate yourself at the Obelisk” in the challenge unlock list.
What if the Obelisk does not end the run?
If you have Beads of Fealty, the Obelisk interaction can send the run to A Moment, Whole instead of producing the standard ending. The Obelisk reference describes this alternate outcome. If you expected the run to end after the interaction, check whether Beads of Fealty are affecting the result.
