How you unlock rides and attractions in Planet Coaster 2 depends on the game mode. In Career Mode, build a Mechanic Workshop, assign Engineers to it, and spend the research points you earn through Park Management. You also need to progress through chapters to expose later research tiers. Sandbox is the mode for more flexible, customized building; Franchise is a separate connected-park mode, and its unlock process is not established by the available official guidance.
Unlock rides through research in Career Mode
Career Mode is organized around scenarios and objectives. Frontier explains that research points unlock attractions and buildings, while the Epic Games Store guide recommends staffing a Mechanic Workshop to accrue points. You then spend those points on research for the park.
1. Place and staff a Mechanic Workshop
Build a Mechanic Workshop in your park and assign Engineers to it. Epic Games Store recommends setting one up early, but does not specify a points-per-time rate or an ideal number of workshops. There is no supported universal estimate for how long a particular unlock takes.
2. Open Research in Park Management
Go to the Research area in Park Management and review the categories available to your park. The listed categories include Coasters, Tracked Rides, Water, Power, Transport, Flat Rides, and Flumes. The exact menu presentation can change with game updates, and the available guidance does not provide platform-specific button sequences.

3. Spend points on the category you need
Choose research that serves the park you are currently building rather than spreading points across attractions you do not plan to use. Check the relevant category for the ride or attraction you want; the sources do not establish a complete list of unlock costs or guarantee a specific ride at a named point.
4. Advance the Career chapter for higher tiers
If a more advanced ride is not available, check your chapter progress as well as your research points. Later Career chapters open higher research tiers, so having points alone does not necessarily make every option available. What to do if a ride is still locked
- Confirm the mode. The workshop, research-point, and chapter instructions apply to Career Mode; do not assume they describe another mode.
- Check the category. Look in the category relevant to the item, such as Coasters, Flat Rides, or Flumes.
- Check chapter progress. An unavailable higher-tier option may require further Career progression, not simply more points.
- Check the current park’s access. Treat an item that remains locked as a scenario or mode restriction unless you can confirm it is available in that park.
Blueprints can speed up building, but are not a proven unlock bypass
Blueprints let you place a pre-themed creation rather than build its parts individually. In Frontier-authored guidance published by Xbox Wire on November 6, 2024, Frontier PR Manager Alex Bolton explains: “Blueprints allow you to place a pre-themed ride, slide, shop, even a group of different scenery items.” The Frontier Workshop also supports saving and downloading creations.
A blueprint is a placement and sharing tool, not evidence that a locked ride can bypass progression. If a blueprint contains an item you cannot use, check access in your own park and mode rather than assuming the blueprint overrides a lock.
