To unlock weapons and armor in Monster Hunter Wilds, use the Smithy at camp: check the weapon tree or forge lists, gather the listed materials, then forge or upgrade the equipment. Weapon branches and armor pieces become available as you progress and obtain their required items.
How weapon unlocking works
At the Smithy, use the weapon tree to see available paths and their requirements. The tree begins with Bone and Metal/Ore lines that branch into monster-specific weapons. A weapon farther along a branch may require both its materials and an earlier weapon in that path. The forge list shows weapons you can craft now; the upgrade list shows weapons you already own that can be advanced. Find the missing materials
Weapon requirements can include monster parts, gathered materials, and Zenny. Materials may come from carving, quest rewards, breaking monster parts, or gathering in the field. Before a hunt, check the weapon tree to identify the exact item you need. If the listed item is tied to a monster part, use Hunter Notes’ Large Monster Field Guide to check breakable parts and associated drops, then target that part during the hunt.
Choose upgrades by more than attack
Compare the stats that matter to your weapon class, including element or status, sharpness, and decoration slots. An upgrade can change these as well as attack, so the weapon with the larger attack figure is not automatically the better fit for your build.

How to unlock armor
Check the Smithy’s armor options after collecting materials from the relevant monsters. Armor entries may not appear until you have the required materials, and the exact requirements vary by piece. If a set or item is still shown as unavailable, obtain materials from the monster or other source named by its requirements and check the Smithy again. - You lack a required material: hunt the associated monster, gather the listed resource, or collect quest rewards, then revisit the Smithy.
- A weapon branch has a prerequisite: inspect the tree and forge or upgrade the preceding node before trying the later recipe.
- You are looking at the wrong Smithy list: use the forge list for craftable weapons and the upgrade list for equipment you already own.
- The recipe is tied to progression: continue the relevant quests and check the in-game prompts, especially for High Rank and later systems.
