Unlock the initial Abyss Gear system in Chapter 3
Progress the main quest until Chapter 3, then follow the Abyss Gear tutorial and the Witch of Wisdom quest flow. Pearl Abyss’s official Version 1.00.02 patch notes, dated March 19, 2026, say a tutorial quest was added at the start of Chapter 3 to teach players about Abyss Gears. PC Gamer’s March 19, 2026 guide places the initial ability to use the system in the Chapter 3 main-quest flow, after the Witch’s Lair vendor and Witch of Wisdom faction quest become available.

For the first encounter, Greymane Codex’s Sylvia guide describes a white crow leading you to a cave in the Meandering Hills, north of Hernand. There you encounter Sylvia, an apprentice witch. Follow the in-game quest markers and tutorial prompts when they appear.
Gear drops and the ability to socket Gear are separate milestones
You may obtain Abyss Gears from challenges or other rewards before the relevant witch service is available. Getting a Gear is not the same as unlocking the ability to embed it in equipment: the Chapter 3 tutorial and witch-related story progression are the key steps for initial system access.

Once the service is available, witches provide Gear-related services, including embedding and removing effects; guides also describe crafting. The effect comes from the Gear you use, while the equipment determines how many sockets are available. Pearl Abyss’s official patch notes confirm that socket counts can differ between items, even items of the same type. Check an item’s available sockets before deciding which Gear to place in it.
Unlocking the first witch does not unlock every witch
Sylvia’s encounter is part of the initial story flow, not a roster-wide unlock. Other witches have separate locations, quests, and service conditions. A September 2026 ConsolePulse guide surveys the broader witch roster, but its individual triggers are not sufficiently established here to give reliable step-by-step unlock instructions for each one. Treat each later witch as a separate progression objective and follow the associated in-game quest rather than assuming all services become available with Chapter 3.

Why some guides give a different chapter
An older GamingBolt guide says socketing unlocks after Chapter 5: Crimson Desert guide to unlocking and using Abyss Cores/Gears. For the initial tutorial and system access, the newer official patch note and PC Gamer’s March 19, 2026 guide both point to Chapter 3. The official note confirms when the tutorial was added; it does not establish the exact trigger for every witch service or later feature. If a particular service is still unavailable, continue its quest flow and check its specific requirements rather than treating the tutorial timing as a promise that every witch is already accessible.
