To update a Minecraft Bedrock Dedicated Server (BDS), download the current server ZIP from Minecraft’s official Bedrock server page, stop the server, back up its files, and install the new package in a clean folder. Then bring your world and the settings, access files, and packs your server uses into that folder and start the server with the correct command for your platform.
Before you update: check the host and make a backup
First, check the current operating-system requirements on Minecraft’s download page; supported systems can change. It currently lists Ubuntu 22.04 LTS or later for Linux, and Windows 10 version 10.0.15063 or later, or Windows Server 2016 or later. The page says other Linux distributions are unsupported.
- Stop the running server cleanly by entering
stopin its console. Microsoft’s Bedrock Dedicated Server getting-started guide documents this console command. Do not replace server files while the process is running. - Back up the entire server directory before making changes. Keep the backup separate from the new installation so you can restore it if the updated server does not load the expected world or settings.
At minimum, make sure the backup includes worlds/ and server.properties. Also preserve allowlist.json, permissions.json, and custom behavior or resource packs if your setup uses them. These are practical preservation steps based on the files and folders described in Microsoft’s guide, not a formal Microsoft update checklist.
Install the new server package
- Download the current Windows or Ubuntu/Linux ZIP from the official Bedrock Dedicated Server page.
- Extract the ZIP into an empty folder, as directed by Microsoft’s getting-started guide. Installing into a new folder rather than mixing new files with the existing installation makes it easier to keep the backup intact and roll back if needed.
- Copy the existing world folder or folders,
server.properties, and any access-control files or packs your server needs into the new folder. - Open
server.propertiesand check thatlevel-namematches the intended world-folder name exactly, including capitalization. Microsoft’s guide explains that this setting selects the world folder.
The official documentation describes downloading and extracting the ZIP, but does not provide a one-click update procedure. This clean-folder workflow uses the documented installation process while reducing the risk of overwriting persistent data.

Start the updated server
Run the appropriate command from the new server directory:
- Windows: run
bedrock_server. - Ubuntu Linux: run
LD_LIBRARY_PATH=. ./bedrock_server.
These are the startup commands in Microsoft’s getting-started guide. Confirm that the expected world loads and that your server settings and access controls are present before players rejoin.

If the update does not work
- The server will not start: Confirm you downloaded the package for the host operating system, extracted it completely, and used the platform’s command from the server directory. For Linux, Minecraft currently lists Ubuntu 22.04 LTS or later as supported; check its download page for the latest requirements.
- The expected world is missing: Stop the server and check that the world folder was copied into
worlds/and thatlevel-namematches its folder name exactly. If the issue remains, stop troubleshooting on the new copy and restore the backup. - Players cannot connect: Check that the intended server process is running and compare the server build with the players’ client versions. The official pages cited here do not establish a universal version-compatibility rule, so consult current release or support information rather than assuming a particular version relationship.
Minecraft’s download page also lists CPU, memory, and storage requirements. Check that page directly when preparing a host, because those requirements can change.
