On Nintendo Switch 2, update the original Nintendo Switch Pro Controller from System Settings > Controllers & Accessories > Update Controllers. First install the latest Switch 2 system update, then make sure the controller is powered on and paired. If the controller update stops, try it again.
Update the original Pro Controller on Switch 2
- Update the console: From the HOME Menu, open System Settings > System > System Update. The console checks for an available system update and downloads it if one is available. Follow Nintendo’s Switch 2 controller update instructions.
- Power on and pair the controller. Switch 2 includes controllers that are powered on and paired when you run the update.
- Start the controller update: Open System Settings > Controllers & Accessories > Update Controllers, then follow the on-screen instructions. If multiple controllers are paired, the console updates them one at a time.
If the update stops or fails
If the update stops before it finishes, run the controller update again. If it continues to fail, Nintendo recommends this sequence:
- Confirm the console has the latest system update using System Settings > System > System Update.
- Restart the console.
- Reset the controller: press its SYNC button once, then press another button on the controller.
- Try System Settings > Controllers & Accessories > Update Controllers again.
If the issue persists, Nintendo says the console and affected controller may need service. See Nintendo’s update troubleshooting guidance.
If the controller does not appear
Check that the controller is powered on and paired before starting the update. This guide is for the original Nintendo Switch Pro Controller, model HAC-013, which Nintendo lists as compatible with Switch 2 for wireless pairing. Nintendo’s Pro Controller pairing guidance identifies the original model. If your controller has a different model number, it may be third-party hardware; contact its manufacturer for support.

Make sure you are using the right menu path
For the original Pro Controller on Switch 2, use System Settings > Controllers & Accessories > Update Controllers. The older Nintendo Switch menu uses System Settings > Controllers and Sensors > Update Controllers; that is not the Switch 2 menu label.
The original Pro Controller is separate from the Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller. You do not need a computer, phone app, or special cable to run the firmware update; the procedure is in Switch 2’s system settings.
