What you need before changing anything
An ATM update changes more than the mod files. A release can include a different Minecraft version, Forge or NeoForge loader build, libraries, startup scripts, default configurations, and server-side mods. Treat the release archive as a matched set rather than replacing only a few familiar files.

Open the modpack’s CurseForge file list and select the release you intend to run, not simply the newest item. ATM10’s file index shows successive 8.0, 8.1, and 8.2 releases, each with its own server pack, so a client on one release should not be paired with a server on another (ATM10 file index). In the selected release, download the archive labeled Server Files (for example, ATM10’s ServerFiles-8.2.zip listing).
Check the Minecraft and loader combination
| Pack | Minecraft version | Loader shown in the cited listing | Release detail |
|---|---|---|---|
| ATM10 | 1.21.1 | NeoForge | The project page listed ServerFiles-8.2.zip as the latest server pack on September 22, 2026 (ATM10 project page). |
| ATM9 | 1.20.1 | Forge | The file list includes Server-Files-1.1.1, uploaded October 12, 2025 (ATM9 file list). |
These details are release-specific. Read the target archive’s included notes and scripts because loader builds and folder layouts can change between releases.

Create a rollback point
Stop the server normally and wait until the console confirms that saving has finished. Then make separate copies of:
- the complete
worlddirectory (and any additional dimensions or world folders your setup uses); - the entire current server directory, including the launcher, libraries, mods, and scripts;
server.properties,eula.txt, and any other settings you changed;- customized
config, defaultconfigs, andkubejsfiles; - Journeymap data when your installation has it; and
- an inventory of manually added or removed mods.
Keep the backup outside the directory you are about to replace. A compressed archive plus an untouched copy of the old server makes it possible to return to the previous release if the new loader fails or a mod migration produces an unexpected result.

Choose an update method
| Method | How it works | Rollback and customization | Main risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| Managed host panel | Use a host’s modpack installer or one-click update, when available. | Convenient if the host supplies snapshots and lets you restore files; verify what it preserves. | The panel may select a different release or overwrite custom files unless you review its options. |
| In-place manual replacement | Back up custom files, then replace the pack’s core folders in the existing server directory. | Fast, but rollback depends on the backup and careful file selection. | Old and new files can be mixed, especially after a Forge/NeoForge change. |
| Clean-folder installation | Extract the new Server Files into a new directory and copy data and settings into it. | Best rollback: the old directory remains intact and can be started again. | Requires more disk space and deliberate reapplication of customizations. |
For a world you cannot easily replace, use the clean-folder method. In-place updating is reasonable for a disposable test server or a carefully documented installation. A managed Minecraft modpack host can save time, but confirm that it supports the exact ATM pack, Minecraft version, Forge or NeoForge loader, backups, and release selection before relying on automation. The official server guidance notes that some hosts provide a modpack installer and one-click updates (official ATM server guide).
Recommended procedure: install into a clean folder
1. Shut down and record the current state
- Announce maintenance and stop player connections.
- Use the server console’s normal stop action rather than killing the process. Confirm that the world has saved and the process has exited.
- Record the current ATM release, Minecraft version, loader version, Java runtime used by your host, and any custom mods or scripts. This record makes a rollback or support request much easier.
- Copy the backup set described above to storage that is not inside the new installation directory.
2. Download the matching Server Files archive
- Open the ATM10 or ATM9 project’s CurseForge page.
- Open the exact target file, check its Minecraft and loader labels, and download its Server Files archive.
- Do not use the client profile’s mod download as a substitute. The server archive normally contains the startup scripts, libraries, server-side defaults, and layout expected by that release.
- Verify that the archive finished downloading before extracting it. A partial archive can look like a configuration error when it is actually missing files.
3. Extract without touching the old server
Create a new directory with a clear name such as atm10-8.2-test or atm9-1.1.1-new. Extract the Server Files archive there. Do not extract over the live directory: keeping both folders lets you compare files and return to the previous installation immediately.
Run the target release’s supplied installer or startup script exactly as documented inside the archive. If the loader changed, the included startserver scripts, installer, and libraries directory are part of the release and should not be borrowed from the old server.
4. Move the persistent game data
With the new server still stopped, copy the existing world directory into the new folder. Also copy local, server.properties, and eula.txt when they are present and you want the same local data and server settings. Copy Journeymap data if your installation uses it. Keep the original backup untouched until the new server has passed testing.

Do not blindly copy every old directory. Folders supplied by the new pack, especially mods, config, defaultconfigs, kubejs, and loader libraries, should come from the target Server Files unless you are intentionally restoring a specific customization.
5. Reapply custom configuration and scripts
Compare your backup with the new installation. Reapply only settings you intentionally changed, such as server difficulty, view distance, permissions, or a carefully tuned mod option. Preserve the new pack’s file structure and defaults where possible.
For KubeJS, merge your scripts instead of replacing the entire new directory with the old one. A pack update may add, rename, or remove scripts. Copy your custom files into the corresponding new locations, then inspect startup output for script errors. The same cautious approach applies to customized config and defaultconfigs: copy a changed file only after checking whether the new release has added keys or changed its format.
6. Check permissions and launch settings
Ensure the account running the server can read and write the new directory. Recreate scheduled tasks, service definitions, firewall rules, port mappings, and backup jobs that referenced the old path. Use the new release’s supplied launcher rather than an old command line that may point at the wrong loader or library set.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThe official ATM guidance gives at least 6 GB of allocated RAM as a baseline for most ATM packs; that is a general starting point, not a special memory requirement created by an update (official ATM server guide). Keep enough additional memory for the operating system and your particular player count, world, and mod configuration.
7. Start once with no players connected
- Launch the new installation using its supplied script.
- Watch the console from the first line until the server reports that it is ready. Do not treat a window that remains open as proof of success.
- Look for migration messages, missing-mod errors, rejected mixins, failed KubeJS scripts, Java-version errors, and permission failures.
- Confirm that the expected world name and dimensions load, then stop the server normally again.
On this first boot, the loader may create or migrate files. Let it finish, then inspect the generated logs before inviting anyone back.

- Play with up to four friends or brave the dungeons alone. Battle new-and-nasty mobs across action-packed, wildly varied levels, in a quest to defeat the evil Arch-Illager!
8. Perform a controlled test
Connect with an administrator account using the exact client release. Check the spawn area, inventories, claims, machines, portals, quests, storage networks, and any features your group relies on. Test a second account if permissions or claims are important. Watch the console while moving through previously loaded and unexplored areas; errors that do not appear at spawn can surface only when a chunk or a particular block entity loads.
Only after this test should you switch the new directory into production, update the service or host-panel path, and allow the rest of the players to connect.
In-place manual update
Use this method only when you have a verified backup and understand which files are custom. Stop the server, then download the exact target Server Files as above.
- Back up customized
config, defaultconfigs, andkubejscontent separately from the full server backup. - From the new archive, replace the core
kubejs, defaultconfigs, mods, andconfigdirectories in the old installation. Do not delete your world or intentional server settings. - If the Forge or NeoForge version changed, replace
librariesand the relevantstartserverscripts or installer as supplied by the target archive. Leaving the old loader files in place is a common cause of launch failures. - Merge your backed-up custom scripts and configuration after comparing them with the new versions. Never overwrite a new default merely because the filename matches.
- Start the server privately, review the complete console and logs, and test the world before opening the port.
Deleting only a few mods and copying the rest around is not a safe shortcut: stale libraries, defaults, or scripts can create a hybrid installation that appears to work until a player loads a specific feature.
Host-panel updates
A managed host may expose an ATM installer with a version selector and an update button. Before clicking it, export the world and configuration or create the host’s own restorable snapshot. Confirm the panel’s selected ATM release, Minecraft version, loader, Java version, and destination directory.
After the panel completes, inspect its file manager and console. Verify that the world timestamp changed only from the expected startup, that custom KubeJS scripts remain, and that the panel did not silently install the latest release instead of the one your clients use. If the panel offers a “clean install” and an “update” choice, read which directories each option preserves. A one-click operation is automation, not a substitute for a rollback plan.

Keep every client on the same release
Every player must select the same ATM release as the server, including the Minecraft version and loader. In the CurseForge launcher, use its version-change workflow to change the installed modpack version rather than manually mixing individual mods. Have players close the game, select the target ATM release, allow the launcher to finish downloading, and then reconnect.
Typical mismatch symptoms include a mod-list mismatch during login, a missing registry entry, incompatible network protocol errors, or a crash while joining. These errors generally mean the client and server are not the same release, a client has an extra mod, or a supposedly identical configuration differs. Compare the exact release number first; only then investigate individual files.
Verification and troubleshooting
The server stops during startup
- Loader or library error: confirm that the new
librariesdirectory and supplied startup scripts are installed together, especially when moving between Forge and NeoForge. - Java error: use the Java version required by the target release and the host’s documented launcher. Do not assume the runtime used by the old pack is valid for a new Minecraft version.
- Missing or duplicate mod: restore the target archive’s complete
modsdirectory, then re-add only documented custom mods one at a time. - KubeJS or configuration exception: temporarily identify the custom file named in the log, compare it with the new default, and restore the script after correcting its syntax or changed item and block identifiers.
The world loads but content is missing
Stop immediately if machines, blocks, entities, or dimensions are absent. Do not continue playing and saving over the problem. Check that the target release includes the mod that owned the missing content and that you copied the correct world directory. If the release intentionally removes or renames content, consult its notes before allowing a normal save; otherwise restore the old server and backup, then investigate on a copy.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Players are rejected at login
Have one affected player compare the launcher’s exact pack version with the server’s target file. Reinstalling the complete profile is safer than adding a single missing jar. If only one player fails, compare that client’s extra mods, disabled mods, and configuration against a known-good profile.
Performance is worse after the update
Check the console for repeated errors, newly generated profiling data, and chunk or entity problems before increasing memory. Confirm that the server is using the intended Java runtime and has adequate CPU and disk capacity. The 6 GB figure in the official guide is a baseline for most packs, not a guarantee of performance at every player count. Change one setting at a time and keep the tested installation available for rollback.
Rollback procedure
- Stop the updated server normally.
- Prevent players from connecting to the updated directory.
- Restore the previous service path or start the untouched old installation.
- Restore the pre-update world backup if the new server saved incompatible changes to the live copy. Never mix a world that has been opened by the new release with an old installation unless the pack’s documentation explicitly supports that direction.
- Record the failing log and the exact release pair before attempting another test on a separate copy.
A clean-folder update makes these steps simple because the old directory remains intact. With an in-place update, rollback requires restoring the complete server backup, not merely copying the old mods directory.
Maintenance after a successful update
Keep the old server backup until players have completed a normal play session and you have verified scheduled backups. Label archives with the ATM release, Minecraft version, loader, and date. Maintain a short change log for custom KubeJS scripts, configuration edits, permissions, and manually added mods.
For future updates, test the new release on a copy first, ask players to update their launcher profiles only after the server passes its checks, and schedule backups before every change. Always read the target archive’s notes: the included scripts and file layout are authoritative for that release, even when the previous update used different folders.
Frequently asked questions
Will updating delete my world?
Installing the new Server Files in a separate folder and copying your existing world directory preserves the world. The risk comes from deleting or overwriting the wrong directory, using an incompatible release, or continuing after a failed migration without a backup.
Can I download only the new mods?
Do not rely on a partial mod download. The Server Files archive keeps the mod list, loader, libraries, scripts, and defaults aligned. Replace the complete release-managed set, then merge only intentional customizations.
Do all players need to update at the same time?
They need matching clients before connecting to the updated server. You can let players install the target profile in advance, but keep the old server online until the maintenance window and switch everyone together.
Is the latest ATM release always compatible with my existing world?
No. Compatibility depends on the exact pack release, Minecraft version, loader, and changes to mods or world data. Select a documented target release, test a copy of the world, and keep the previous installation available until the new one is proven stable.
