DriveBackupV2 is the best all-around choice for most Paper and Spigot networks. It supports Bukkit-family servers, scheduled backups, configurable retention and several remote destinations, including Google Drive, OneDrive, Dropbox, (S)FTP and S3-compatible storage. Choose Advanced Backups when granular restoration and differential or incremental modes matter most. Choose PaperBackup for a Paper or Purpur 1.21.1 server using Google Drive and limited local disk space; its listing does not guarantee plain Spigot support.

Those recommendations are based on the compatibility and feature information published in the projects’ listings and repositories. Minecraft versions, Java requirements and plugin behavior change, so verify the current project page and test a restore on your exact server before treating any plugin as disaster-recovery protection.

Which plugin fits your server?

The right backup plugin is determined less by its name than by your recovery plan. A small Paper server that only needs an occasional Google Drive archive has different requirements from a multi-instance network that needs off-site copies, retention limits and recovery of one configuration file without replacing an entire world.

  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  • Pick DriveBackupV2 for broad Bukkit-family compatibility, multiple cloud or FTP targets, scheduled or interval runs and configurable deletion of older backups.
  • Pick Advanced Backups if you need ZIP, differential and incremental modes or a command-line restore that can target one file or a whole world.
  • Pick PaperBackup if you run Paper or Purpur 1.21.1 on Java 21, want Google Drive, and prefer streaming a ZIP directly to Drive instead of first creating a complete local archive.

No listing establishes a universal performance winner, a category-wide failure rate or an independently measured adoption ranking. Treat download counts and ratings shown on product pages as page metadata, not as proof that one plugin protects every server better than another.

The version ranges above come from each project’s published listing. They are not a promise that every future Minecraft patch will work. A server may also differ from the listing because of Java version, forks, other plugins or a nonstandard world layout.

DriveBackupV2: the broadest general-purpose option

DriveBackupV2 is designed to add an off-site copy of server data. Its official listing says it can back up arbitrary server files and folders, run on a schedule or interval, upload to several remote services and remove older backups after configured limits are exceeded. The project repository documents Bukkit, Spigot, Paper and Purpur support for Minecraft 1.8 through 1.21.x.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Destinations and data scope

The listing names Google Drive, OneDrive, Dropbox and remote (S)FTP. The repository additionally documents S3-compatible storage, remote FTP sources and MySQL databases. That combination suits an administrator who keeps one copy in cloud object storage and another on an FTP-compatible host, or who needs database data included alongside world files.

Because the plugin can target arbitrary files and folders, define your scope deliberately. A complete server copy normally includes world directories, configuration files, permissions, scripts and any plugin data that is not regenerated safely. Database-backed plugins need a consistent database export or the repository’s documented database integration; copying only a live database file may not be a usable backup.

Scheduling and retention

The default schedule is hourly according to the listing and wiki. You can use a different interval when hourly archives would consume too much storage or when the server changes infrequently. Configure retention limits before enabling a recurring schedule. The plugin deletes older backups when those limits are exceeded, so an incorrectly low limit can remove recovery points you expected to keep.

Retention is not a substitute for a second copy. If the remote account is deleted, credentials are revoked or an upload is corrupted, the retention policy cannot recreate the missing data. Keep at least one copy outside the live server and periodically verify that an older backup can be downloaded and opened.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Authentication and operational checks

Each remote destination requires its own account linking or credentials. Complete that authentication while the server is in a maintenance window, then perform a manual backup and confirm the resulting object exists at the destination. Check the server log for upload completion, not merely for a scheduled task starting. If the destination supports folders or buckets, use a dedicated path so retention rules do not remove unrelated files.

Where it is the better choice

DriveBackupV2 is the practical default for mixed estates: for example, a network with both Spigot and Paper instances, or a host that wants Google Drive today and S3-compatible storage later. Its documented version range also covers older 1.8 servers that cannot use a plugin limited to modern Paper builds.

Advanced Backups: strongest when restoration is the priority

Advanced Backups is listed for Paper and Spigot and offers three modes: ZIP, differential and incremental. Its command-line tool can restore a single file or an entire world, which is a meaningful distinction when the failure is limited to one configuration file, player data file or plugin directory.

Understanding the three modes

  • ZIP: creates a conventional archive that is straightforward to copy and inspect. It is usually the easiest format for a one-off migration or a complete restore, but repeated full archives can consume more storage.
  • Differential: records changes relative to a baseline full backup. Recovery generally requires the baseline and the latest differential, so retain both together.
  • Incremental: records changes since the previous backup. This can reduce the size of each run, but a complete recovery depends on the full backup and every required incremental in sequence.

The project information does not state destination integrations or retention limits, so confirm those details in the current documentation before designing a remote-copy policy around this plugin. Mode names alone do not guarantee that a backup is recoverable; test the exact chain of files produced by your schedule.

Granular and whole-world restores

The command-line restore tool is the reason to select Advanced Backups over a simpler archive plugin when recovery precision matters. A single-file restore can avoid replacing a healthy world merely to recover one damaged configuration. A whole-world restore is available when the damage is broad.

Stop the server before replacing active world or plugin files unless the documentation for your exact workflow explicitly supports a live operation. Preserve the damaged copy in a separate directory, restore into a staging location first, then compare permissions, ownership and expected paths before bringing the server back online.

Dimension-layout warning

The Hangar listing warns of a known end/nether backup issue when server software or plugin combinations place those dimensions outside the main world directory. Do not assume that a successful-looking archive contains every dimension. On a test instance, inspect the archive for the Overworld, Nether and End paths used by your server software and plugins, then perform a restore of each dimension before relying on the plugin for disaster recovery.

Version range and validation

The directory listing includes Minecraft versions from 1.7.10 through 1.21.4. That broad range is useful for legacy Spigot installations, but it also means behavior can differ substantially between versions. Validate the plugin on the same server software, Minecraft patch, Java runtime and world layout as production.

PaperBackup: a focused Paper/Purpur and Google Drive workflow

PaperBackup is a lightweight option for Paper or Purpur 1.21.1 running Java 21. It creates ZIP backups, supports scheduled and manual runs, and can upload directly to Google Drive. Its listing explicitly says plain Spigot support is not guaranteed, so it should not be treated as the universal answer for a Spigot server.

Why streaming matters for disk space

In Drive mode, the repository explains that PaperBackup streams the ZIP directly to Google Drive instead of creating a full local backup archive first. That can help a small or medium server whose local disk does not have room for a second complete copy. Streaming does not eliminate the need to check the remote result: verify that the Drive object exists, has a sensible size and can be downloaded and opened.

Requirements to check before installation

  • Server software must be Paper or Purpur rather than ordinary Spigot.
  • The project listing specifies Minecraft 1.21.1.
  • The Java runtime must be Java 21.
  • A Google Drive account and the plugin’s required authorization must be available.

If any of those conditions differ, choose a plugin whose published compatibility matches your environment or test PaperBackup on a disposable instance first. A plugin that loads on an unsupported server may still omit worlds, fail during upload or break after a restart.

When not to choose it

PaperBackup is a poor fit for a mixed Paper/Spigot fleet, a legacy 1.8 server or an installation that needs several destination types. It is also not the first choice when file-level command-line restoration is a requirement; the supplied project information describes ZIP creation and uploads but does not document the granular restore feature provided by Advanced Backups.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How to choose by recovery requirement

Choose by platform first

Start with the exact server software and Minecraft patch. A plugin’s broad version range is useful only if your Java runtime and fork are also supported. Paper and Purpur are not interchangeable with plain Spigot for every plugin, and PaperBackup is the clearest example of that boundary.

Choose by restore scope

If you routinely need to recover one file, Advanced Backups has the clearest documented capability. If your usual incident is total loss of a host, a complete archive uploaded off-site may be sufficient, provided you have tested the restore. DriveBackupV2’s supplied description emphasizes copying arbitrary files and folders, but it does not specify a file-level restore command.

Choose by storage constraints

Use differential or incremental modes when repeated full archives would exceed your storage budget and you can preserve the full chain. Use PaperBackup’s Google Drive streaming when local temporary space is the immediate constraint. Use DriveBackupV2 when you need configurable deletion limits across recurring remote uploads.

Choose by destination

DriveBackupV2 has the broadest documented destination set: Google Drive, OneDrive, Dropbox, remote (S)FTP and S3-compatible storage, plus documented FTP sources and MySQL databases. PaperBackup is focused on Google Drive. Advanced Backups’ destination support is not stated in the supplied project information, so confirm it before committing.

Installation on Paper or Spigot

PaperMC’s documentation says plugins are commonly obtained from Hangar, Modrinth or BukkitDev and installed by placing the platform-appropriate JAR in the server’s plugins folder. Use this sequence for any of the three plugins.

  1. Make a safety copy first. Stop the server cleanly and copy the current world, configuration and plugin-data directories to storage outside the live server. This protects you if the new plugin fails to load or changes a setting unexpectedly.
  2. Record your environment. Write down the server software and exact Minecraft version, Java version, world names, dimension paths and current free disk space. These details are essential when diagnosing a compatibility or dimension issue.
  3. Obtain the correct JAR. Use the project’s current listing on a recognized plugin distribution site or its official repository. Match the JAR to your platform and version; do not rename a build intended for another server software.
  4. Install while the server is stopped. Place the JAR in the server’s plugins directory. Do not place it in mods or a proxy’s plugin directory.
  5. Start and inspect logs. Confirm that the plugin enables without dependency, Java or version errors. If it disables itself, stop and resolve that error before configuring schedules.
  6. Complete destination authorization. Link Google Drive or enter the required FTP, SFTP or S3-compatible credentials where supported. Use a dedicated destination path and least-privilege credentials when the service allows it.
  7. Set scope, schedule and retention. Include every required world and plugin-data path, choose an interval appropriate for the server’s activity, and set retention limits that leave enough recovery points.
  8. Run a manual backup. Use the plugin’s documented manual-backup command or control. Wait for completion, then verify the archive or remote object independently.

Never assume that a plugin’s successful enable message means a usable backup exists. An authorization token can be valid while an upload fails because of quota, path permissions or a disconnected network.

How to test a restore before disaster strikes

  1. Create an isolated test server using the same server software, Minecraft version, Java runtime and plugin set as production.
  2. Obtain a backup through the same path production would use: download it from remote storage rather than copying an already-local test archive.
  3. Check archive contents. Confirm the main world, Nether, End, player data, configuration files and important plugin data are present at the expected paths.
  4. Restore without overwriting production. For Advanced Backups, test both a single-file restore and a whole-world restore with its command-line tool. For archive-based workflows, extract into the staging server and compare the resulting directory structure.
  5. Start the test server and exercise real gameplay. Join with a test account, load several chunks, use key plugins and inspect the console for missing data or repair messages.
  6. Measure recovery time. Record download, extraction and startup time. That is your practical recovery objective, not the time shown for creating a backup.
  7. Document the runbook. Record destination credentials or token-revocation steps, the required plugin version, restore order and the location of the latest verified backup.

Repeat this test after changing server software, moving world directories, replacing a storage provider or changing the backup mode. Advanced Backups’ dimension warning makes a post-change test especially important when Nether or End paths are customized.

Common failure modes and fixes

The plugin does not load

Check the exact server software, Minecraft version and Java runtime against the project’s listing. PaperBackup, for example, specifies Paper or Purpur 1.21.1 and Java 21 and does not guarantee plain Spigot. Remove an incompatible JAR, restore the pre-install copy if necessary and test a matching build on a clean instance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The schedule runs but no remote file appears

Reauthorize the destination, inspect logs for quota or permission errors and verify that the configured path is the one you are checking. Run a manual backup and wait for an explicit completion message. A scheduler firing is not proof that the upload succeeded.

The server runs out of disk space

Reduce unnecessary scope, set retention limits, or use a mode that avoids repeated full archives. DriveBackupV2 can delete old backups when configured limits are exceeded. PaperBackup’s Drive streaming avoids creating a full local ZIP first. For Advanced Backups, preserve the full-plus-differential or full-plus-incremental chain before deleting anything.

A restored world is missing Nether or End data

Inspect the backup for the actual dimension directories used by your server. Advanced Backups’ listing warns about an end/nether issue when software or plugin combinations move those dimensions outside the main world directory. Correct the path configuration, create a test backup and restore all dimensions before returning to production.

You need one file, not a whole-world rollback

Use Advanced Backups’ command-line restore capability when its documented workflow matches your server. If using another plugin, extract a copy into staging and copy only the verified file after stopping the server; do not edit an active database or world file blindly.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A backup exists but cannot be opened

Download it again, compare its size with the source, and test extraction on a separate machine or staging host. If the archive is incomplete, use the previous verified recovery point and investigate network interruptions, quotas and destination permissions before the next scheduled run.

Operational checklist

  • Keep at least one backup outside the live server’s disk.
  • Use retention limits that preserve more than one recovery point.
  • Verify every scheduled run reaches its destination.
  • Test a single-file and full-world recovery where the plugin supports both.
  • Inspect Nether and End paths after world-layout or plugin changes.
  • Record the exact Minecraft version, Java runtime and plugin build used for each verified restore.
  • Recheck compatibility before upgrading Minecraft or changing server software.

For most Paper and Spigot administrators, DriveBackupV2 offers the least restrictive starting point. Advanced Backups is the more recovery-oriented choice when differential or incremental storage and file-level restoration outweigh destination simplicity. PaperBackup is efficient for the specific Paper/Purpur 1.21.1 plus Java 21 and Google Drive combination, but its narrower compatibility means it should be selected deliberately rather than installed as a general Spigot solution.
