Back up the world before opening it in the new release, then test a duplicate of that backup. Java Edition can create a dated ZIP with Make Backup and may display Upgrade and Play when conversion is required. Bedrock Edition uses an export or copy workflow that depends on the platform and can offer Update and Play for major world-format changes. Keep the untouched backup until you have checked the upgraded copy.

What changes when you open an old world?

Minecraft worlds contain more than terrain. The save also records player inventories, locations, structures, block entities, villagers, redstone states, maps, commands, settings and generated dimensions. A new release may migrate that data to a newer format when the world is first opened. The game normally performs the migration for you, but a failed launch, incompatible add-on or damaged save can make recovery difficult if the only copy has already been converted.

The safe pattern is therefore the same for single-player, Realms and servers: stop playing, make an independent backup, duplicate it, open only the duplicate in the target release, and verify the result before touching the original. A seed is not a backup. It can regenerate terrain, but it cannot restore your builds, inventory, statistics, villagers or other progress.

Choose the procedure for your edition and world type

Situation Backup method What the first launch may show Important qualification
Java single-player Edit on the world, then Make Backup; Minecraft creates a dated ZIP. Upgrade and Play when data migration is required. Edit World and Re-Create World can remain disabled until the upgrade is complete.
Bedrock on Windows Play → pencil/Edit icon → Export World; store the resulting world file elsewhere. An update prompt, including Update and Play, for some major format changes. Other platforms use their own copy or export instructions and storage locations.
Bedrock on console or mobile Use the platform’s world-copy/export feature or a Realm download. Prompt wording and restore location vary by platform. Do not assume a Windows file path or a console cloud save is an independent backup.
Java or Bedrock Realm Download a world copy before experimenting; use the Realm backup controls. The downloaded copy upgrades independently of the live Realm. Bedrock keeps the most recent world version in backups after Quit & Save; Java exposes downloadable backups through World Backups.
Dedicated server Stop the server and copy the complete world directory. The updated server software may migrate the save on startup. Test a copied directory with the target server before replacing the live world.

Java Edition: make and test a backup

1. Create the dated ZIP

  1. Launch the same Java installation that currently opens the world.
  2. From the title screen choose Singleplayer.
  3. Select the world, choose Edit, and click Make Backup.
  4. Wait for Minecraft to finish. It creates a dated ZIP backup; do not move or rename it until you have confirmed that the operation completed.
  5. Copy that ZIP to a location outside the normal Minecraft folder. A portable external SSD is a practical second location, especially before a large update or a server migration.

Keep one untouched copy offline or disconnected while you test. If the game crashes during conversion, that copy is your rollback point.

2. Duplicate the backup

Make a working copy of the ZIP or of the unzipped world folder. Give the working copy a name such as MyWorld-1.20-test so it cannot be confused with the original. Never perform the first launch of the new release against the only backup.

3. Open the duplicate in the target release

  1. In the launcher, select the exact target release. If you use a separate installation directory, keep it separate from the installation that holds your everyday worlds.
  2. Start the game and open Singleplayer.
  3. Choose the copied world. Current Java release notes use Upgrade and Play when the save requires data-format migration.
  4. Read the warning and accept only after confirming that the selected folder is the duplicate. During this process, Edit World and Re-Create World may be unavailable until the upgrade finishes.
  5. Allow the world to load completely. Do not force-quit while the game is writing the converted save.

4. Verify before replacing anything

Check the spawn area, at least one main base, inventories and ender chests, farms, redstone machines, villagers, portals and every dimension you rely on. Test command blocks or datapack-driven features if the world uses them. Save, quit normally and reopen the copy once; a world that loads only on the first attempt is not verified.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Only after these checks should you designate the upgraded copy as your new working world. Keep the original ZIP indefinitely if the world matters.

Java world-folder locations

When transferring a tested copy between computers, Minecraft Help lists these Java saves locations after you unzip the backup:

  • Windows: %appdata%.minecraftsaves
  • macOS: ~/Library/Application Support/minecraft/saves

Close Minecraft before copying a folder into the saves directory. If a launcher uses a custom game directory, use that installation’s saves folder instead of assuming the default path.

Bedrock Edition: export or copy the world

Windows procedure

  1. Open Minecraft and select Play.
  2. Find the world and select its pencil/Edit icon.
  3. Open Export World under file management.
  4. Save the world file to a separate drive or folder, not only inside the normal Minecraft data directory.
  5. Duplicate the exported file and import or open the duplicate in the target Bedrock release.

The export file is your rollback artifact. Keep the original untouched, because opening an exported world may update its internal format.

  • The classic UNO card game builds fun on game night with a Minecraft theme.
  • UNO Minecraft features a deck and storage tin decorated with graphics from the popular video game.
  • Players match colors and numbers to the card on top of the discard pile as in the classic game.
  • The Creeper card unique to this deck forces other players to draw 3 cards.
  • Makes a great gift for kid, teen, adult and family game nights with 2 to 10 players ages 7 years and older, especially Minecraft and video game fans.

Other Bedrock platforms

Console and mobile editions expose platform-specific copy, export or cloud-storage controls. Follow the controls shown by that edition and keep a copy that is independent of the device’s ordinary save slot. A platform migration can change where the file is stored; record the world name and backup date so you can identify the correct copy during restore.

Major world-generation updates

Bedrock can display a backup option with Update and Play when a major format or generation change affects an existing world. Use the backup option before accepting the update. In the 1.18 height change, existing flat-world blocks remain in their original locations while the usable vertical range expands to -64 through 320; the newly added space is filled according to the updated generation rules. This does not mean every old chunk is regenerated. It means new or extended areas can follow different terrain rules from areas that were already saved.

After the world loads, verify underground bases, redstone, farms and portals before traveling far. Generate new chunks only after the old areas are confirmed, because newly explored terrain can have different biomes, caves, structures or borders from terrain created in the earlier release.

Updating a Realm without risking the live copy

Bedrock Realms

  1. Open the Realm management screen and choose the option to download the world.
  2. Save the download locally and make a second copy before opening it.
  3. Test the duplicate in the target Bedrock version.
  4. If the test fails, leave the live Realm unchanged and restore from the local copy or the Realm’s backup controls.

After Quit & Save, Bedrock Realms keeps the most recent world version in its backups. Treat that as an additional recovery option, not a reason to skip a local download.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Java Realms

Use the Realm’s World Backups controls to download a backup, then test the downloaded copy in the target Java release. Do not perform an irreversible experiment on the active Realm when a local copy can be upgraded first. Once the copy is verified, upload it only if you intentionally want it to replace the Realm world.

Dedicated servers: a controlled upgrade

  1. Announce maintenance and stop the server cleanly. Do not copy a world while the server is writing region files.
  2. Copy the entire world directory, including all dimensions and metadata, to a separate drive. For a multi-world setup, identify every directory used by the server configuration.
  3. Install or select the target server software in a separate test directory.
  4. Point the test server at the copied world and start it. Watch the console for conversion errors, missing data packs or plugin failures.
  5. Connect with a client matching the target release and test spawn, bases, inventories, dimensions, farms, commands and permissions.
  6. Stop the test server. Keep the live directory untouched until the test is complete, then schedule a second maintenance window to replace it if the results are acceptable.

Managed hosting panels differ in their backup and version controls. Confirm whether a panel backup is a downloadable world archive, a snapshot tied to the provider, or both; the restore path and retention period are provider-specific.

Mods, datapacks, add-ons and plugins

A successful vanilla conversion does not guarantee that community content will work. The official material for the upgrade workflow does not establish universal compatibility for every mod, datapack, Bedrock add-on or server plugin.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Record the exact versions of loader, mods, datapacks, add-ons and plugins before upgrading.
  • Read each project’s target-version notes and remove or update content that is explicitly incompatible.
  • For a modded Java world, test with the same loader and a copy of the complete instance, not just the world folder.
  • For Bedrock, check behavior of behavior packs, resource packs and experimental toggles separately.
  • On a server, test permissions, command changes and plugin data as well as the terrain.

If the game reports incompatible content, stop at the warning. Do not repeatedly launch the only copy while trying random combinations; restore the backup, build a test profile and change one component at a time.

What to check after the upgrade

  • Loading: the world reaches the game and can be saved and reopened.
  • Player data: position, inventory, armor, experience, ender chest and statistics are present.
  • Builds: important bases, storage rooms, maps and redstone contraptions look intact.
  • Entities: villagers, animals, minecarts, boats and named mobs are present where expected.
  • Dimensions: Nether and End portals lead to the correct destinations and dimension-specific builds remain accessible.
  • Automation: farms, hoppers, observers, command blocks and scheduled functions behave as intended.
  • Terrain boundaries: previously generated chunks are intact; newly explored chunks generate consistently with the target release.
  • Performance: allow the game to finish any initial conversion work before judging ordinary frame rate or server tick rate.

Rollback and recovery

If the upgraded copy will not load

  1. Quit the game or stop the server without overwriting the original backup.
  2. Move the failed test copy out of the active saves directory so it cannot be selected accidentally.
  3. Restore a fresh duplicate from the untouched ZIP, exported Bedrock file or server-directory copy.
  4. Test without mods, add-ons or datapacks if the world can run in a clean profile.
  5. Check the target release’s compatibility notes before trying again.

Do not use a seed as a substitute for restoration. Recreating a world from its seed may reproduce terrain, but it will not restore structures, inventories, entities, maps or progress.

If the wrong world was upgraded

Stop immediately and identify the dated backup made before the launch. Restore that copy to a separate location and rename it clearly. If the game has already saved changes over the only copy, recovery depends on whatever operating-system, Realm or hosting snapshots still exist; there is no guaranteed way to reconstruct every change from a seed.

Java-to-Bedrock or Bedrock-to-Java conversion

Changing edition is a separate migration, not an ordinary version update. Microsoft Learn describes Chunker as an open-source, third-party converter. Its documented coverage includes level settings, blocks, biomes, tile entities, multiple dimensions, containers and items, and in-game maps. The same documentation says it cannot currently convert entities or player inventories.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That limitation means a converted world can retain much of its terrain and block data while losing the people, animals, player possessions or other entity state that makes the save valuable. Preserve the original edition’s backup, run the conversion on a copy, and inspect every dimension and important build before deciding whether the result is usable. Chunker is provided by external third-party contributors and is not a Mojang or Microsoft offering.

Common mistakes and their fixes

Symptom Likely cause Safer response
The game asks to upgrade immediately. The save uses an older data format. Cancel, confirm you selected a duplicate, then accept Upgrade and Play on that copy.
Older settings or edit controls are disabled. Java has not completed required migration. Finish the upgrade, quit normally and reopen the world before changing settings.
A Bedrock export cannot be found. It was saved inside the same device storage or under an unexpected platform location. Export again to a clearly named external folder and verify the file exists before testing.
New terrain looks different. Only newly generated chunks use the newer generation rules. Keep the old copy, mark the boundary and inspect critical builds before exploring farther.
Villagers, mobs or inventories are missing after edition conversion. Cross-edition conversion does not currently convert entities or player inventories. Restore the original edition for those details; do not treat a seed or converted terrain as a complete backup.
A server starts but plugins or datapacks fail. Community content targets a different game or loader version. Use a test directory, review each project’s compatibility notes and update components individually.

Quick pre-launch checklist

  • Stop the game, Realm session or server.
  • Create the edition-appropriate backup: Java dated ZIP, Bedrock export/copy, Realm download or complete server directory.
  • Store one untouched copy outside the normal Minecraft folder; an external SSD is suitable.
  • Duplicate the backup and label the test copy with its target version.
  • Confirm mods, datapacks, add-ons and plugins have target-version support.
  • Open only the duplicate and allow conversion to finish.
  • Check spawn, bases, inventories, farms, redstone, villagers, dimensions and commands.
  • Reopen the tested copy once before making it your main world.
  • Keep the original backup until you are satisfied that the upgraded world works.

Key points to remember

  1. Back up first because the first launch in a new release can convert world data.
  2. Java’s Make Backup creates a dated ZIP; Bedrock relies on export or copy workflows that vary by platform.
  3. Java 26.1 release notes use Upgrade and Play for worlds requiring data migration.
  4. A seed recreates terrain, not the played world’s progress.
  5. Cross-edition conversion has data-loss risks; documented Chunker limitations include entities and player inventories.
  6. Keep the original backup until the upgraded copy has been fully verified.
