For one forgotten player password, an authorized administrator should run removeuserfromwhitelist <username> in the Project Zomboid server console or hosting-panel console. When that player next joins, the game asks them to create a new password. This targeted reset is safer than deleting the server database. If console access is unavailable, stop the server, back up its database, and clear only that player’s password in the Whitelist table with an SQLite editor.

Use the targeted whitelist reset first
Project Zomboid stores multiplayer account credentials in the server’s whitelist data. A forgotten password for one player does not require rebuilding the server or removing every record. The normal recovery path is to remove only the named account from the whitelist through an administrative console. The account can then join with the same username and choose a new password.

This approach addresses one player’s login while leaving the rest of the server database intact. It is appropriate when you can authenticate as a server administrator and reach either the in-game/server console or the console supplied by your hosting panel.
What the reset changes
The whitelist entry is removed, so the player’s existing password is no longer accepted as a stored credential. On the next connection, Project Zomboid treats the account as needing a password again. The player should use the exact same in-game username when reconnecting; changing the spelling or capitalization can point the reset at a different account.

The important permission side effect
Removing a user from the whitelist can also remove that user’s administrator role. If the account previously had elevated permissions, plan to restore them after the player has connected and established the new password. Do not assume that a successful password reset preserves administrative access.
Before you begin
Confirm authorization
Only an operator who is authorized to manage the server should perform either reset method. Console commands and database edits affect other players, moderation records and access controls. If you rent a managed server and do not have a console or file manager, ask the host’s support team for an account-level password reset rather than deleting files yourself.

Ask the player for the username shown in Project Zomboid, including spaces, punctuation and capitalization. The command targets a username, not an email address or a character name. Verify the spelling against the whitelist or the server’s player list before making a change.
Choose the right server database
File names and panel layouts differ between installations. A common default path is Zomboid/db/servertest.db, but some hosting panels use a file named dedicated.db or another database name tied to the server configuration. Do not overwrite a file merely because its name appears in an example. Use the database that your server actually loads.
Method 1: reset one player from the console
This is the quickest route because it changes only the selected whitelist account and does not require downloading or opening a database.

- Open an administrative console. Use the Project Zomboid server console, or the console window provided by your hosting panel. Make sure you are connected to the server instance that the player uses.
- Run the whitelist-removal command. Enter
removeuserfromwhitelist <username>, replacing<username>with the player’s exact in-game username. Do not include the angle brackets. - Wait for the command to finish. Keep the server running unless your panel specifically requires a restart for console commands. The objective is to remove that one account, not to clear the whole whitelist.
- Have the player reconnect. They should join with the same username. Project Zomboid should prompt them to set a new password during that connection.
- Test the new login. After the player creates the password, have them disconnect and reconnect once. This confirms that the new credential works before you restore any additional permissions.
- Restore administrator access if needed. If the account was an administrator before the reset, reapply the server’s admin role using your normal administration procedure after the new password is established. The password reset itself is not a role-restoration operation.
Why this method is preferable
A console reset has a narrow scope: one named whitelist entry. It avoids editing SQLite records by hand, avoids transferring a live database through a panel, and normally avoids planned downtime. It also gives you a clear point at which to check whether the player still needs administrator privileges.

Method 2: clear the password in the server database
Use a database edit only when you cannot run the whitelist command. This route requires file access, a database editor that can open SQLite files, a backup and a server stop/start cycle.
1. Stop the server cleanly
Stop the Project Zomboid server from its control panel or service manager before downloading or editing the database. Editing a file while the server is writing to it can leave you with a stale upload or conflicting changes. Confirm that the process is fully stopped according to your host’s status indicator.
2. Make a backup before touching the file
Download a copy of the database and keep the original unchanged. The backup gives you a recovery point if the wrong row is edited, the file is uploaded to the wrong location or the server fails to start. Do not proceed without knowing which local copy is the untouched backup and which copy you intend to edit.
3. Download the database used by this server
Locate the database in the server’s data directory. Many installations use Zomboid/db/servertest.db; a panel may instead expose dedicated.db or a differently named file. Follow the panel’s configured path and file name. If several databases are present, identify the one associated with the active server rather than guessing from the filename alone.

4. Open the file in SQLite Browser
Open the downloaded database with SQLite Browser or an equivalent SQLite table editor. Navigate to the table named Whitelist. You are looking for the row belonging to the affected username, not for a global password setting.
5. Clear only the target password field
Locate the player’s row and clear only the value in its password field. Leave the username and unrelated columns intact. The stored password is encrypted, so attempting to decode it is not the recovery procedure; removing the password value is what allows the game to request a new one.
6. Save the edited database
Commit the table change and save the database in SQLite format. Close the editor only after it reports that the write completed. Keep the untouched backup separate so it cannot be confused with the edited file.
7. Upload the edited file and restart
Upload the edited database back to the exact directory and filename used by the server. If your panel asks whether to overwrite the existing file, verify the path and server identity before accepting. Start the server and wait until it reports that it is ready for connections.

The player should reconnect with the same username. Project Zomboid should request a new password. Test that login, then restore administrative access if the account previously held it.

Console reset versus database edit
The choice is mainly about access and operational risk. Both methods target one player when performed correctly, but they do not have the same requirements.

If you have a working administrative console, use it. Reserve the database path for situations where the command cannot be used or your panel exposes file access but no usable console.

Instructions that mention servertest.db are examples, not a universal filename. Project Zomboid servers can be configured with different database names, and managed panels may abstract the directory structure. One panel might show Zomboid/db/servertest.db; another might present dedicated.db. The correct file is the one loaded by the running server configuration.
If a reset appears to have no effect, first check whether you edited and uploaded the active database. Also verify that the server was stopped before the upload and restarted afterward. An accurate edit to an unused copy cannot change the account the player sees.

Deleting the entire database is sometimes discussed as a way to recover a forgotten built-in administrator password. That is a different problem from resetting one player’s password. A full deletion affects every record in the database, including bans and player data. It can therefore destroy moderation history and player progress while still requiring you to rebuild access.

For a single forgotten player password, do not delete the database. Use the targeted console command or clear only the matching password field in the Whitelist table. Whole-database deletion should be considered only for full built-in-admin recovery when its broader data-loss consequences are understood and accepted.
Troubleshooting after the reset
The command does not affect the player
- Check that the command was entered in the console for the correct server instance.
- Compare the username character by character with the whitelist entry. A different spelling creates a different target.
- Confirm that the player reconnects with the same username used in the reset.
- If the panel has no functional console, use the backed-up database-edit procedure instead.
The player still gets the old password prompt
A password prompt is expected after a successful reset; the player should be able to create a new password there. If the game continues to reject the new credential, check whether the player changed usernames, whether the console command targeted the intended account and whether a database edit was saved to the active file.
The player lost administrator abilities
This is an expected possible side effect of whitelist removal. Once the new password works, restore the server’s administrator role through your normal admin-management process. Grant only the permissions the account still needs.
The server will not start after a database upload
Stop further changes and restore the untouched backup if the edited file was saved incorrectly or uploaded to the wrong location. Recheck that the replacement is the server’s original SQLite database, that only the target password field was changed and that the file was uploaded to the configured path. If the panel provides support, give them the database filename and the time of the attempted replacement.
Security and recovery checklist
- Use an authorized administrator account.
- Confirm the exact in-game username before targeting an account.
- Prefer the console reset when console access is available.
- Stop the server and create a backup before editing any database file.
- Edit only the target row’s password in the
Whitelisttable. - Never try to decode the encrypted stored password.
- Use the database filename and path configured for your server, not an example copied blindly.
- Verify the player can reconnect and create a new password.
- Restore administrator access only after confirming the new login.
- Do not delete the whole database for a single-player reset.
Developer-confirmed recovery path
In a Project Zomboid Steam Community response dated 13 January 2022, developer Beard described the database route as: “Admin Panel > Database > Remove the user from the database > Let them connect with the same username and a new password.” That sequence reinforces the essential principle: remove the affected account, then have the player return with the same username and establish a new password, rather than wiping unrelated records.
For most administrators, the practical order is therefore straightforward: use removeuserfromwhitelist <username> first, verify the player’s reconnect, restore any required admin role, and use a backed-up Whitelist table edit only when console access is unavailable.
