How to Update Blu-ray Drivers and Firmware to Fix Blu-ray Player Problems

A Blu-ray drive on Windows and a standalone Blu-ray player need different updates. This guide explains how to identify the device, reinstall Windows drivers, update model-specific firmware, handle disc compatibility problems and recover safely from failed attempts.

The correct update depends on the hardware. A Blu-ray drive inside or attached to a Windows PC uses Windows optical-drive drivers; a living-room Blu-ray player uses model-specific firmware from its manufacturer. Use the Windows path when the drive is missing from File Explorer or shows a Device Manager error. Use the firmware path when a standalone player rejects particular discs, reports an update problem, or needs compatibility fixes.

Do not download a generic “Blu-ray driver.” Identify the device, exact model and region first, then use the manufacturer’s documented update method. The procedures below put the lowest-risk checks first and explain what to do if an update fails.

Driver or firmware: which update does your Blu-ray device need?

“Blu-ray driver” can describe two different maintenance tasks. Confusing them is a common reason an update fails or solves the wrong problem.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Device and symptom What it uses Correct update source Main risk
Internal or USB Blu-ray drive connected to a Windows computer; missing in File Explorer or showing a Device Manager error Windows optical-drive driver and related system configuration Your computer or optical-drive manufacturer, plus Windows’ own reinstall process An unsuitable driver or damaged configuration can leave the drive unavailable
Standalone Blu-ray player connected to a television; particular titles fail or the player requests an update Model-specific firmware The exact model’s official manufacturer support page Interrupting power during installation can leave the player unresponsive or require repair
Standalone player update cannot reach the network Offline firmware package, when the model supports one The model’s documented USB or disc procedure The file, media and player must match; an unsupported package can fail

Microsoft treats a computer’s optical drive as a Windows device. Sony’s support catalog, by contrast, asks you to select a player model for firmware, drivers, software, manuals and version information. That distinction is the starting point for every fix.

Before changing anything: identify the device and capture the symptom

  1. Decide whether this is a computer drive or a standalone player. A drive installed in a desktop or connected by USB follows the Windows procedure. A living-room unit that connects to a television follows the manufacturer-firmware procedure.
  2. Write down the exact brand and model. Record every letter, number and regional suffix on the label or the device’s information screen. Firmware packages are not universal, and versions can differ by model and region.
  3. Describe the failure precisely. Note whether the drive is absent from File Explorer, whether Device Manager shows an error code, whether an update stops partway through, or whether only certain Blu-ray titles fail. A disc-specific failure points to a different layer than a missing Windows device.
  4. Record the current version where the device exposes it. A standalone player normally lists firmware information in its setup or system menu. In Windows, record the optical-drive entry and any driver details shown in Device Manager before uninstalling anything.
  5. Do not begin with a random driver-download site. Use the computer maker or optical-drive maker for Windows drivers, and the exact player model’s official support page for standalone firmware.

Fix a Blu-ray drive that Windows does not recognize

These steps apply to an internal or external Blu-ray drive used with Windows. Microsoft notes that a CD/DVD drive can disappear from File Explorer or show a Device Manager error when its driver or configuration is damaged.

1. Check both File Explorer and Device Manager

Open File Explorer and look for the optical drive under “This PC.” Then open Device Manager and expand DVD/CD-ROM drives. Check whether the Blu-ray drive appears normally, has a warning icon, or is absent. Open the device’s properties if an error code is shown and record that code before making changes.

The two views answer different questions: File Explorer shows whether Windows has mounted the drive for everyday use, while Device Manager shows whether Windows has enumerated the hardware and loaded its device configuration.

2. Check BIOS and chipset settings

Restart the computer and enter the BIOS or UEFI setup using the key shown during startup. Confirm that the optical drive or its storage controller has not been disabled. The exact menu names vary by computer manufacturer, so use that manufacturer’s manual for navigation.

Back in Windows, check for the current chipset driver supplied by the computer manufacturer. Microsoft lists BIOS and chipset settings among the items to verify when an optical drive disappears. Do not substitute a package intended for a different computer model.

  • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.

3. Obtain the manufacturer’s current Windows driver

Go to the support page for the computer or optical-drive manufacturer and search by the exact model. Select the driver intended for your installed Windows edition and architecture when the page offers those choices. Download only from that manufacturer’s site; an unverified package can be incomplete, mismatched or bundled with unwanted software.

Follow the manufacturer’s installation instructions and restart if requested. Recheck File Explorer and Device Manager after Windows starts. If the device now appears without an error, test it with a disc you know is readable before changing anything else.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Reinstall the optical-drive device through Device Manager

If the drive still has an error or remains unavailable, Microsoft’s documented recovery step is to remove the device entry and let Windows install it again:

  1. Open Device Manager.
  2. Expand DVD/CD-ROM drives.
  3. Right-click the affected optical-drive entry and choose Uninstall device.
  4. Confirm the removal. Do not uninstall unrelated storage or chipset devices.
  5. Restart Windows.

During the restart, Windows detects the optical drive and reinstalls its device driver automatically. After signing in, check Device Manager for the drive and test File Explorer. If Windows does not recreate the entry, shut down completely, verify the drive’s physical connection according to the computer maker’s service instructions, and then contact that maker rather than forcing an unrelated driver package.

5. Escalate when the documented steps do not solve it

Microsoft states that its listed resolutions may not solve every case. Contact the computer or drive manufacturer with the model, Windows edition, Device Manager error code, BIOS result and the steps already completed. This information helps support distinguish a driver/configuration problem from a hardware or compatibility fault without repeating the same removals.

Update firmware on a standalone Blu-ray player

A living-room player does not use a generic Windows driver. Its firmware is tied to the exact model, and sometimes to a regional version of that model. Use the manufacturer’s support page, not a package found by searching for a similar model number.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

1. Confirm the model and installed firmware

Read the model label on the player or open its setup menu and locate the system-information or firmware-version screen. Compare the installed version with the version listed for that exact model on the official support page. If the page asks you to select a region, choose the region in which the player is being used.

Do not assume that the newest file for a visually similar player is compatible. Model names can differ by one character while requiring different firmware, manuals or update media.

2. Choose the update channel documented for your model

Manufacturers may provide more than one method. Sony documents network and disc methods and, for some models, USB procedures through the model’s support materials. The available channel is model-specific, so follow the instructions attached to your player rather than a generic tutorial.

  • Network update: Use the player’s built-in update command when the model supports it. Sony describes its network process as straightforward, but the player still must maintain a reliable connection until the installation completes.
  • USB update: Use this only when the model’s support materials explicitly provide a USB procedure. The file structure, USB format and menu path must match those instructions.
  • Disc update: Use an update disc only for models whose official instructions support it. Sony specifies a new blank CD-R for applicable models; the update file and disc must match the identified player.

3. Prepare for an uninterrupted installation

Connect the player to stable power, close the disc tray if the instructions require it, and do not press buttons, switch off the player or disconnect AC power while the firmware is being written. Sony warns that an interrupted update can leave the player unresponsive or require repair.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

Do not start an update during a situation in which power or network service is likely to be interrupted. If the model requires a disc, use a new blank CD-R and verify the model compatibility before buying or burning media. A blank CD-R is not a universal solution; it is useful only where the official procedure calls for it.

4. Run a network update

  1. Open the player’s setup or system menu and choose the firmware or network-update option named in the model manual.
  2. Allow the player to check the manufacturer’s service and display the available version.
  3. Confirm the update only after checking that the displayed model and version are correct.
  4. Leave the player powered on and connected until it reports completion and restarts.
  5. Open the information screen again and verify the new firmware version.

If the network update fails, check the network connection and retry as Sony recommends. Repeated failures should be taken to the manufacturer’s support channel instead of being interrupted or replaced with a file for another model.

5. Use an offline disc or USB method when supported

Download the firmware only from the exact model support page and follow its file-naming and media instructions. For a disc-based procedure, Sony’s applicable instructions call for a new blank CD-R. Burn or prepare the media exactly as directed, insert it into the player, and start the update from the documented menu or prompt.

Keep the player connected to power throughout the process. When the player restarts, wait for the completion message before removing the disc or USB device. If the player rejects the media, stop and recheck the model, region, file version and preparation steps; do not repeatedly try files intended for another unit.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

6. Recover from a failed update

If a network attempt fails before installation begins, verify the connection and retry. If the player becomes unresponsive during or after installation, do not keep cycling the power or insert additional update media. Record what the screen shows, the model, the previous firmware version and the update method, then contact the manufacturer. Sony directs users to support when repeated attempts fail and warns that an interrupted installation can require repair.

When only certain Blu-ray discs fail

A player that works with some discs but rejects particular Blu-ray titles may need the latest firmware for its model. Newer releases can depend on compatibility changes that older firmware does not contain. Update the player before assuming the disc itself is defective.

  1. Test whether the failure is limited to one title or occurs with every disc.
  2. Confirm the exact player model and installed firmware version.
  3. Check the official model support page for a newer firmware release and its regional availability.
  4. Use the supported network, USB or disc method without interrupting power.
  5. After the restart, test the previously rejected title again.

There is no single firmware version that applies to every Blu-ray player. Versions differ by model and region, so a general number or a file copied from another player is not a safe recommendation.

Diagnose by symptom before choosing a fix

What you see Most likely layer to check first Action
Windows drive missing from File Explorer Windows optical-drive detection or configuration Check Device Manager, BIOS and chipset settings, then reinstall the optical-drive device
Device Manager warning icon or error code Windows driver or device configuration Record the code, obtain the manufacturer’s driver and use the uninstall-and-restart procedure
Standalone player cannot reach update service Network path Check the connection and retry; use the model’s documented offline method if available
Standalone player rejects selected titles but plays others Firmware compatibility Install the latest firmware listed for that exact model and region
Player becomes unresponsive during an update Interrupted or failed firmware installation Stop experimenting with power cycles or other files and contact the manufacturer

Common mistakes that make Blu-ray updates less safe

  • Searching for a universal driver. Windows optical drives and standalone players follow different update systems; there is no single package that fits both.
  • Using a near-identical model’s firmware. One character in a model number can represent a different hardware revision or region.
  • Ignoring the source. Manufacturer support pages are the appropriate source for drivers and firmware. Unverified download sites do not establish compatibility.
  • Interrupting power because the screen appears idle. Firmware writing can take time. Follow the model instructions and wait for a completion or restart message.
  • Buying update media before checking the instructions. A new blank CD-R is relevant only to models with an official disc-based procedure.
  • Repeating a failed attempt without recording details. Keep the model, version, error message and update channel so support can diagnose the failure efficiently.

After the update: verify the result

For a Windows drive, confirm that the device appears in File Explorer and Device Manager without a warning icon, then test a known-readable disc. For a standalone player, verify the firmware version in the information menu and test the title that previously failed. If the same symptom remains, report the exact result to the manufacturer rather than repeating an update that is already installed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep the model manual and the support-page instructions with your records. Future firmware releases, network availability and update media requirements can differ by model and region, so the same procedure should not be assumed for another player.

Optional automation

As an optional shortcut for a Windows hardware-driver problem, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan more than 100 devices, identify outdated, corrupted or missing drivers, install official drivers, show current and recommended versions, and provide driver backup, restore and scheduled scans. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8 and 7 and offers a two-day free trial without a credit card before a subscription; results vary, and no tool repairs every crash.

Final checklist

  • Identify whether the device is a Windows optical drive or a standalone player.
  • Record the exact model, region and current version or error code.
  • Use the computer or drive manufacturer for Windows drivers.
  • Use the exact standalone-player support page for firmware.
  • For Windows, check File Explorer, Device Manager, BIOS and chipset settings, then uninstall the optical-drive device and restart.
  • For a standalone player, choose only the network, USB or disc method documented for that model.
  • Never switch off or unplug the player during firmware installation.
  • If retries fail or the player becomes unresponsive, contact the manufacturer with your recorded details.
