If Minecraft on Windows 7 crashes with “Bad video card drivers” or an org.lwjgl.opengl error, update the driver for the exact graphics adapter installed in the computer. Download the package for that adapter and your Windows 7 edition (32-bit or 64-bit), install it, restart Windows, and test the same Minecraft version again.
The message identifies a compatibility failure between the video driver and Minecraft’s Lightweight Java Game Library (LWJGL), but it does not prove that every crash is caused by the GPU. Confirm the crash signature first, then separate a driver problem from an unsupported OpenGL feature or Windows 7’s current Minecraft service limits.

What the “Bad video card drivers” message means
Minecraft Java Edition uses LWJGL to communicate with graphics hardware through OpenGL. Oracle’s Java support guidance says a crash-log line beginning with org.lwjgl.opengl indicates an incompatibility between the installed video-card driver and LWJGL. The same guidance explains that Minecraft can crash when the currently installed driver is incompatible with the game.
That diagnosis points to the installed display driver, not automatically to a defective graphics card. A driver can be wrong for the adapter model, the Windows edition, or a notebook’s customized hardware. A game version can also require OpenGL capabilities that an older adapter does not provide. Updating Java by itself does not repair either condition.

Confirm that this is the driver-related crash
Do not replace files or install a random driver before checking the evidence. Minecraft usually creates a crash report in its game data directory; Java may also create a file named hs_log_pid. Open the newest file in a text editor and search for these indicators:
- A line that starts with
org.lwjgl.openglsupports the driver/LWJGL diagnosis. - The name of the graphics adapter, driver version, and Java version help you select a matching package.
- The first error and the stack trace are more useful than a generic “game crashed” message.
An org.lwjgl.opengl line is evidence of a graphics compatibility problem, not proof that the GPU is the only possible cause. Mods, a damaged profile, an unsupported OpenGL feature, or a separate Java failure can produce similar symptoms. Save a copy of the crash report before changing anything so you can compare results after the update.

Driver downloads are model-specific. “NVIDIA,” “AMD,” or “Intel” is not enough information, and a notebook may need a package supplied by its computer manufacturer rather than the generic desktop package.

- Close Minecraft and the launcher.
- Click Start, right-click Computer, choose Manage, and open Device Manager. (You can also type
devmgmt.mscinto the Start-menu search box.) - Expand Display adapters. Record the complete name of every adapter, including a model number such as a GeForce, Radeon, or Intel HD Graphics variant.
- If more than one adapter appears, note which one the computer uses for Minecraft. Many notebooks have integrated and discrete adapters.
- Check the Windows edition and architecture. Open Control Panel > System and Security > System and record whether Windows 7 is 32-bit or 64-bit, along with Service Pack 1 if shown.
- In Device Manager, open the adapter’s Properties, select the Driver tab, and record the provider, date, and version currently installed.
If Device Manager shows Microsoft Basic Display Adapter, Windows is using a fallback driver. That is a strong reason to obtain the proper package from the computer or graphics-card manufacturer before troubleshooting Minecraft further.
Choose the correct Windows 7 driver
Use the support site for the adapter manufacturer, or the notebook/system manufacturer when it provides a customized package. Oracle’s guidance identifies NVIDIA, Radeon/ATI (now AMD), and Intel as the relevant driver vendors. Select the exact model and explicitly select Windows 7 and the correct 32-bit or 64-bit architecture when a Windows 7 package is available.

Compare the release date and version with the driver currently shown in Device Manager, but do not assume that the numerically newest package is correct. The package must support the exact adapter and Windows 7 edition. Keep the downloaded installer so you can reinstall or roll back if the new release behaves worse.

Install the driver safely
- Create a recovery point. Open Control Panel > System and Security > System > System protection, select the Windows system drive, choose Create, and give the point a descriptive name such as “Before Minecraft graphics driver.” Windows 7 may require System Protection to be enabled first.
- Close software that uses graphics. Exit Minecraft, the launcher, Java applications, video players, and overlays. Save your work before starting the installer.
- Run the manufacturer installer. Use the package downloaded for the exact adapter and Windows 7 architecture. Follow its prompts. If it offers a clean-install option, read the description carefully; a clean installation can remove existing driver settings, profiles, or components.
- Restart Windows. Do not skip the reboot, even if the installer says it is optional. The display driver and OpenGL components may not be replaced completely until Windows starts again.
- Verify the result. Return to Device Manager, open the adapter’s Properties > Driver tab, and confirm that the expected provider, date, and version are present. A yellow warning icon indicates that Windows did not load the driver correctly.
- Retest the same game setup. Launch the same Minecraft version and Java configuration that produced the crash. Changing several variables at once makes it difficult to tell whether the driver solved the problem.
If the installer refuses to run, check that you selected the correct architecture and model. A 32-bit package will not install on 64-bit Windows, and a package for a related but different adapter may be rejected. Do not bypass those checks by manually copying files into Java or Minecraft directories.
Roll back if the new driver causes a different failure
A driver update can expose a compatibility problem that was not present before. If Windows becomes unstable, Minecraft loses graphics acceleration, or the crash changes immediately after installation, use the previous package you saved.
- Open Device Manager > Display adapters, right-click the adapter, and choose Properties.
- On the Driver tab, select Roll Back Driver if the button is available, then follow the prompts and restart.
- If rollback is unavailable, uninstalling the display device from Device Manager and running the earlier manufacturer installer may restore the prior version. Use the manufacturer’s documented uninstall option where one is provided.
- If Windows will not start normally, press
F8during startup, choose Advanced Boot Options, and try Last Known Good Configuration or Safe Mode. From Safe Mode, use System Restore or reinstall the saved driver package.
Record which version worked and which version failed. That information is useful if the manufacturer later publishes another Windows 7 package.

If Minecraft still crashes after the update
Test an unmodified profile
Use a clean Minecraft profile with no mods, shader packs, custom launch arguments, or third-party overlays. A clean test distinguishes a basic driver/LWJGL problem from a mod or configuration conflict. Keep the original profile backed up rather than deleting it.
Check Java and the crash report again
Run the Java version supported by the Minecraft release you are testing, and inspect the new crash report for the first error line. Note the Java version, GPU model, driver version, and whether the error still contains org.lwjgl.opengl. If the error has changed, troubleshoot the new signature instead of repeating the same driver installation.
Consider OpenGL capability limits
Some older adapters do not expose the OpenGL capability required by a particular Minecraft version. Reinstalling Java cannot add a hardware feature that the adapter lacks. Check the adapter’s documented OpenGL capability and the requirements of the Minecraft version you are trying to run. If the hardware cannot meet that requirement, possible choices are an older compatible Minecraft release, a different supported computer, or a hardware replacement that also has a suitable Windows 7 driver. Replacing the GPU is not the standard first fix; it depends on the adapter’s capability, driver availability, and the rest of the system.

Check for a notebook-specific package
If a generic NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel installer fails or the crash continues on a notebook, return to the notebook manufacturer’s support page. Switchable-graphics systems can require coordinated chipset, integrated-graphics, and discrete-graphics packages. Install them in the order specified by the manufacturer, then restart before testing Minecraft.
Windows 7 support is separate from the driver fix
A successful driver installation does not restore every current Minecraft service. The Minecraft Help system-requirements information states that, as of March 2025, players must update to at least Windows 10 to access online play and continue receiving updates through the Minecraft Launcher. That policy concerns the current Launcher and online services; it is separate from whether an older Java installation can start a local game.
Consequently, a driver update may make a legacy Windows 7 installation launch again while current Launcher updates or online features remain unavailable. Decide whether your goal is legacy offline play or current online access before spending time on additional driver experiments. For the latter, moving the computer to a supported Windows version is a platform change, not a graphics-driver repair.

Approaches that can make the problem worse
- Do not copy a random
opengl32.dll. Placing a DLL downloaded from an unknown source into Java or system folders can create mismatched libraries and additional crashes. Oracle’s guidance recommends updating the installed video driver, not replacing DLLs manually. - Do not install by brand alone. “NVIDIA driver” or “Intel driver” is not a complete match. Verify the exact model, Windows 7 architecture, and notebook/system-maker requirements.
- Do not promise that the latest package will work. Windows 7 support differs by adapter generation, and a newer release can introduce a regression. Keep a rollback path.
- Do not treat antivirus software as a graphics repair. Security scans address a different problem. The
org.lwjgl.openglsignature calls for graphics-driver and compatibility checks first. - Do not assume every crash is the GPU. If a clean profile and the correct driver do not change the crash report, investigate Java, mods, corrupted game files, or an OpenGL capability limit.
Quick decision checklist
- Does the crash report contain
org.lwjgl.opengl? - Have you recorded the complete adapter model, current driver version, and Windows 7 32-bit/64-bit edition?
- Did you download a package that explicitly supports that model and Windows 7?
- Did you create a restore point, close Minecraft and Java applications, install the package, and restart?
- Does Device Manager show the expected driver without a warning icon?
- Does a clean, unmodified Minecraft profile reproduce the crash?
- Could the selected Minecraft version require OpenGL features the adapter does not provide?
- Is your goal legacy offline play, or current Launcher and online access that now requires Windows 10 or later?
