To update League of Legends manually, open the official Riot Client and let it check for and install the update. You do not need to download a separate patcher or reinstall the game for Riot’s newer patcher transition; the existing patcher handles the change. Riot’s New League patcher guidance, dated September 4, 2025, describes that process.
Update League of Legends through Riot Client
- Close any open League of Legends game or client windows.
- Open Riot Client and sign in if prompted.
- Allow the client to finish any update it starts before launching the game. If an update is available, the client’s patcher downloads and applies it.
- When patching finishes, launch League of Legends from Riot Client.
“Manually” means opening the official client and initiating or allowing its update—not installing an unofficial patch file or changing game files. Riot’s guidance does not describe a supported standalone patch-file download process.
If Riot Client will not patch the game
Check Windows permissions and lingering processes
On Windows, the patcher may fail if it cannot modify files in the League installation directory. Riot says the patcher needs administrator privileges to update the installation. Close any lingering League processes in Task Manager, check the installation folder’s permissions using Riot’s patcher instructions, then reopen Riot Client and try again.
Run the in-client Repair option
If Riot Client opens but the installation appears damaged or incomplete, use its Repair action: Riot Client > profile icon > Settings > League of Legends > Repair. This repairs the selected game installation; it is not a separate patch download. See Riot’s repair instructions.

Distinguish game repair from the Riot Repair Tool
The Riot Repair Tool is a separate support utility for certain connection problems and for gathering logs. Use it when troubleshooting a connection issue or when Riot Support asks you to; it is different from the in-client Repair button. Riot explains the tool at Riot Repair Tool.
Send persistent patch errors to Riot Support
If patching still fails, submit a ticket to Riot Support and include the League client logs. Riot’s updated client patcher issue guide, dated July 16, 2025, explains how to locate and compress logs on Windows and Mac.

If the patch is not available yet
Check Riot Client and Riot’s 2026 patch schedule rather than assuming the update is late. Riot labels schedule dates as planned, and they can change; the schedule does not establish the exact availability time for every player or region.

If the update completes but the game still will not launch, compare your computer with Riot’s current system requirements. Riot’s requirements page, updated September 22, 2026, lists Windows and Mac requirements and notes that minimum requirements can change.
