How to Update Minecraft on PC: Java, Bedrock, Launcher, and Fixes

Update Minecraft correctly on PC: use Latest Release for Java, Microsoft Store for Bedrock, and follow safe troubleshooting steps when the Launcher or Store is stuck.

Java Edition updates through the Minecraft Launcher: open Java Edition, select Latest Release from the version menu beside Play, then launch the game. Minecraft for Windows—the Bedrock Edition—updates through the Microsoft Store: open Library and choose Get updates or the equivalent update control.

The Launcher is a separate application, so updating Minecraft and updating the Launcher are not always the same thing. Use the guide below to identify your edition, install the correct update, verify it worked, and troubleshoot failures without unnecessarily risking your worlds.

First, identify which Minecraft you use

On PC, “Minecraft” can mean Java Edition, Bedrock Edition for Windows, or the Minecraft Launcher that manages both.

What you see Edition Main update route

Minecraft for Windows Bedrock Edition Microsoft Store, with the Launcher used to access it
Both listed in the Launcher Java and Bedrock Update each through its relevant channel

Windows PC purchasers generally receive both Java Edition and Bedrock Edition in Minecraft: Java & Bedrock Edition for PC. Java is also available on macOS and Linux; Minecraft for Windows is the Bedrock version for Windows 10 and Windows 11.

Before updating

  • Close Minecraft and the Launcher.
  • Check your internet connection and available storage.
  • Confirm that you are signed in with the Microsoft account that owns Minecraft.
  • Back up important worlds, especially before a major update, reinstall, Launcher reset, or mod change.
  • Note whether you use mods, a mod loader, snapshots, previews, or a custom older installation.

Normal updates are not intended to delete worlds, but no update or repair process should be treated as an absolute guarantee. Minecraft support recommends backing up worlds before uninstalling and reinstalling.

How to update Minecraft Java Edition

  1. Open the official Minecraft Launcher.
  2. Sign in with the Microsoft account associated with your purchase.
  3. Select Minecraft: Java Edition.
  4. Open the version selector or arrow beside the Play button.
  5. Choose Latest Release.
  6. Click Play and allow the Launcher to download any required files.
  7. After the game opens, check the version shown on the title screen or in the game information area.

Minecraft’s official update instructions recommend Latest Release when you want the normal current version. Do not confuse it with Latest Snapshot, a preview, a modded profile, or a manually selected older installation.

  • CREATE YOUR WORLD — Build whatever you imagine in an infinite world that’s unique in every playthrough.
  • EXPLORE AND CRAFT — Discover biomes, resources, and mobs, then craft your way through a sandbox world filled with surprises.

If Java still opens an older version

Return to the installation selector and check that the profile is set to Latest Release, not an older version or snapshot. Modded profiles may intentionally remain on an older release, and a multiplayer server may require a specific version. Restart the Launcher after changing the selection.

How to update Minecraft for Windows (Bedrock)

  1. Close Minecraft.
  2. Open Microsoft Store in Windows.
  3. Select Library.
  4. Choose Get updates, Check for updates, or the equivalent control shown by your Store version.
  5. Install updates for Minecraft for Windows and any related gaming components offered by the Store.
  6. Reopen the Launcher or Minecraft for Windows and start the game.

Microsoft Store labels can vary between Windows versions and Store redesigns. The official Microsoft process is documented on its page for getting updates for apps and games.

  • Fight your way through an all-new action-adventure game, inspired by classic dungeon crawlers and set in the Minecraft universe!
  • Play with up to four friends or brave the dungeons alone. Battle new-and-nasty mobs across action-packed, wildly varied levels, in a quest to defeat the evil Arch-Illager!

How to update the Minecraft Launcher

The Launcher has its own update process:

  1. Open Minecraft Launcher.
  2. Open Settings.
  3. Select About.
  4. Install an available Launcher update, then restart the Launcher.

The official Minecraft download page also provides installation options. If the Launcher is missing or damaged, reinstall it through the Microsoft Store or the official Minecraft download page. Reinstall only after protecting important worlds and confirming that you know the correct Microsoft account credentials.

How to confirm Minecraft is updated

  • Java’s installation selector says Latest Release.
  • The Microsoft Store shows no pending Minecraft for Windows update.
  • The version number in the game matches the version expected by your server, Realm, or friends.
  • The game starts normally after a restart.
  • You can connect to the relevant server, Realm, or friend’s world.

A multiplayer error can indicate a version mismatch rather than a damaged installation. Minecraft support recommends updating, restarting, and trying again when clients do not match.

Minecraft will not update: fixes in the safest order

  1. Restart Windows. Close Minecraft, the Launcher, Xbox app, and Microsoft Store first.
  2. Check storage and connectivity. Make sure Windows has enough free space and that the connection is working.
  3. Check Microsoft Store updates. This is essential for Minecraft for Windows and related components.
  4. Check Launcher → Settings → About. Install a pending Launcher update.
  5. Check the account. Sign out and back in with the Microsoft account that owns Minecraft.
  6. Use the stable Java profile. Select Latest Release, not a snapshot or preview, unless you specifically need test content.
  7. Repair the Launcher on Windows. Open Start, search for Minecraft Launcher, right-click it, select App settings, then choose Repair. Reopen the Launcher.
  8. Reset the Launcher if Repair fails. Use the same path and select Reset. Resetting can remove app-specific data or sign-in state, so protect worlds and confirm your credentials first.
  9. Reset the Microsoft Store cache. Press Windows key + R, enter WSReset, select OK, wait for the process to finish, and try the update again. This resets the Store cache; it is not a Minecraft command.
  10. Use Gaming Services troubleshooting. Windows Minecraft updates can depend on Xbox services and Gaming Services. Follow the current official Minecraft Launcher troubleshooting instructions for the Gaming Services Repair Tool rather than relying on outdated button names.
  11. Reinstall last. Back up worlds, confirm the correct account, and then reinstall the Launcher or game if less destructive steps fail.

Updating Minecraft with mods

Updating the base game does not automatically update every mod or mod loader. A new Minecraft release may not yet be supported by your loader, individual mods, shaders, resource packs, or performance tools.

  1. Back up the world.
  2. Record the current Minecraft and mod-loader versions.
  3. Test the new release in a separate installation or profile.
  4. Update the loader and mods only when compatible versions are available.
  5. Keep the older installation for an older server or world that still depends on it.

Snapshots and previews are especially unsuitable for a normal multiplayer or long-running survival profile. They can introduce compatibility problems, so back up first and use a separate installation.

Why Minecraft says “outdated client” or will not join

Check these possibilities:

  • You selected an older Java installation instead of Latest Release.
  • You are using a snapshot or preview while the server expects a stable release.
  • The server, Realm, or friend’s world has not updated yet—or requires a different version.
  • You are using different editions: Java players cannot join ordinary Bedrock sessions, and vice versa.
  • The update installed but the game was not restarted.

Compare the version shown in your game with the version required by the server or friends. If the issue is on Bedrock, finish the Microsoft Store update and restart Minecraft.

Do you need to buy Minecraft again?

Usually, not if you already purchased Minecraft for PC. Install the official Launcher and sign in with the same Microsoft account used for the original purchase. If the game is missing, verify the account before buying anything again. The official PC product and ownership guidance is available on the Minecraft Java & Bedrock Edition for PC page.

Operating-system considerations

Minecraft’s Java system-requirements guidance states that, as of March 2025, players need at least Windows 10 or macOS 10.15 for online play and continued Java updates through the Launcher. This guidance primarily concerns Java Edition and should not be reduced to a blanket statement that every Minecraft feature has identical requirements on every platform. Older unsupported operating systems may not receive the same update or online-play access.

The short decision tree

  • I play Java: Launcher → Java Edition → version selector → Latest Release → Play.
  • I play Minecraft for Windows: Microsoft Store → Library → update check.
  • The Launcher itself is stuck: App settings → Repair, then Reset if necessary.
  • The Store is stuck: run WSReset, then retry.
  • I use mods: back up, use a separate profile, and verify compatibility.
  • I bought Minecraft before: sign in with the original Microsoft account before considering another purchase.
