Update supported SteelSeries devices through Engine inside the SteelSeries GG desktop app. Connect the device to a Windows or Mac computer by USB, open GG → Engine, select the device, and follow the firmware-update banner. Keep the device—and, for wireless headsets, the transmitter or dongle—connected until GG confirms that the update is complete.
What you need before updating
SteelSeries Engine is now a device-management section within SteelSeries GG, not usually a separate modern application. GG also includes tools such as Sonar and Moments.
Firmware is the low-level software stored on the device or its wireless receiver. Updating GG itself updates the computer application; it does not necessarily update the device firmware until you run the device-specific update.

Current GG-compatible categories include headsets, mice, keyboards, speakers, and microphones. Older or discontinued products may instead require legacy Engine software or a product-specific update tool.
Supported computers
- Windows 10 or later: the preferred platform for the fullest current GG experience.
- macOS 11 or later: still supported for compatible products, but SteelSeries says macOS no longer receives new GG features or regular ongoing updates. Critical fixes and some critical firmware support may remain available.
- Linux: SteelSeries GG is not supported.
- Chromebooks and mobile phones: the GG desktop installer is not supported. The Arctis Companion mobile app is separate and should not be treated as a universal firmware updater.
- PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo Switch: these are generally the device’s destination platforms, not the normal firmware-update host.
Download GG only from the official SteelSeries website. Windows is the safer choice if you have access to it, particularly for a new product, a wireless headset-and-receiver update, or an update that does not appear on Mac.

Prepare the hardware
- Use the supplied or a known-good USB cable.
- Connect directly to the computer rather than through a USB hub.
- For wireless headsets, power on the headset and connect its transmitter, receiver, or dongle too.
- For Arctis GameBuds, connect the charging case with the earbuds inside.
- Close other device-management utilities that might compete for USB access.
- Capture or back up important profiles, macros, DPI settings, and lighting configurations before reinstalling GG. SteelSeries warns that reset or reinstall procedures can remove custom configurations.
- Do not disconnect, power off, or restart the device while firmware is being written unless GG specifically instructs you to do so.
How to update SteelSeries firmware in GG
- Install or update GG. Download the current app from SteelSeries’ Engine page, install it, and launch it. Let GG finish updating itself before troubleshooting the device.
- Connect the hardware. Plug a wired device directly into the computer. For a wireless headset, connect both the headset and its wireless transmitter or dongle. Keep the headset powered on.
- Open Engine. In GG, select Engine and wait for the device card to appear.
- Check the device card. If firmware is available, GG displays an update banner. Depending on the product and GG version, it may be red, orange, or labelled something such as Critical Update.
- Start the update. Click the banner and follow the on-screen instructions. Some wireless products may ask you to unplug and reconnect a component during the guided process. Do this only when GG tells you to.
- Wait without interrupting it. Keep every required component connected. The device may restart during the process. Do not close GG, unplug the cable, turn off the headset, or restart the computer while the firmware is being written.
- Verify completion. Wait for GG to rediscover the device, confirm that the update banner has disappeared, and check the device settings or gear menu for a firmware version if your product exposes one.
- Test the device. Check audio, microphone input, buttons, lighting, wireless connection, and the console mode you use. Reconnect or restart the device if GG instructs you to.
There is no universal update duration for every SteelSeries product. Treat the progress screen and completion message as the authority rather than unplugging after a fixed number of minutes.
How to tell whether the firmware is already current
If GG correctly detects the device and its card has no firmware-update banner, SteelSeries’ guidance treats the device as up to date. The exact color and wording vary by product and app version.

This conclusion applies only after successful detection. If the device does not appear in Engine, you have a detection problem—not proof that no firmware update exists.
- Confirm that the correct device or wireless receiver appears in Engine.
- Update GG itself.
- Reconnect the device and, where applicable, its transmitter or dongle.
- Try another USB port and cable.
- Restart GG and check again.
See SteelSeries’ guidance for checking firmware status and confirming whether a product is up to date.
Updating a wireless SteelSeries headset
Wireless headset updates can involve two pieces of hardware: the headset and its transmitter or dongle. Connect both to the computer when the product’s instructions require it. Updating only the headset may leave the receiver on different firmware.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →If the headset works after updating but no longer connects to its transmitter, use the model-specific pairing instructions rather than a generic reset. For Arctis Pro Wireless only, SteelSeries documents this procedure:
- On the transmitter, select Options → System → Reset.
- On the transmitter, select Options → Pairing → Next → Next.
- Power on the headset and hold its volume wheel for more than six seconds.
- Wait for the pairing confirmation.
Do not apply that sequence to other SteelSeries headsets unless SteelSeries specifically lists it for your model. Product-specific instructions are available in the supported-headset firmware guide.
If Engine does not detect your device
Engine must see the device before it can offer its firmware. Work through these steps in order:

- STUNNING RGB — Radiant 3-zone PrismSync RGB shines in 16.8 million configurable colors
- ULTRA LIGHTWEIGHT — Purposefully designed holey shell reduces weight to 59g for effortless, fast gameplay
- AQUABARRIER — Mouse interiors are shielded from water splashes, dust, and dirt, technology rated IP54

- 9 PROGRAMMABLE BUTTONS — Natural comfort with fully customizable buttons which include a side panel and an up/down flick switch
- Connect the device directly to a computer USB port, preferably a rear port on a desktop.
- Try a different USB port.
- Try a different known-good USB cable.
- Remove the USB hub or dock from the connection.
- Update GG to the current version.
- Quit GG completely from the taskbar or system tray, then reopen it.
- Unplug the device for 10–15 seconds, reconnect it, and wait for GG to rescan.
- Restart the computer.
- On Windows, check whether USB power-saving is turning off the port and disable that power management temporarily if necessary.
Only after preserving profiles and macros should you consider reinstalling GG. SteelSeries’ device-detection guide and reinstall/reset guide provide the relevant recovery steps.
If the firmware update freezes or fails
Do not repeatedly unplug a device while it may still be writing firmware. First allow a reasonable period for the update to complete and check whether GG is genuinely frozen. Then use this least-destructive recovery ladder:
- Quit and reopen GG.
- Restart the computer.
- Move the device to another USB port.
- Try both USB 2.0 and USB 3.0 ports if available.
- Connect directly rather than through a hub.
- Try a second computer, preferably Windows.
- Temporarily test with VPN or firewall software disabled only if necessary, then re-enable it immediately afterward.
- Fully uninstall and reinstall GG after recording or backing up custom settings.
- Contact SteelSeries Support if the device remains unusable or the update repeatedly fails.
SteelSeries’ failed-update guidance recommends these kinds of port, computer, software, and network checks. It does not establish one universal recovery flash or factory-reset method for every product.
Mac-specific caution
macOS support is product- and app-dependent in 2026. Confirm GG has the permissions it requests, restart GG and the Mac, and try Windows if possible. SteelSeries’ older failure article contains Windows executable names in a Mac-related section, so do not copy those executable-exclusion instructions as a universal Mac fix. Contact SteelSeries Support before changing security exclusions or attempting product-specific recovery.

Current GG products versus older SteelSeries hardware
Use current GG for current GG-compatible products. Do not install Engine 2 or Engine 3 merely because an online guide mentions them.

When to contact SteelSeries Support
Escalate to SteelSeries when:
- Engine still cannot see the device after trying different ports, cables, computers, and a current GG installation.
- The update fails repeatedly on more than one computer.
- The device no longer powers on, reconnects, or appears after an interrupted update.
- A wireless headset updates but cannot pair with its receiver and the product-specific instructions do not resolve it.
- You cannot determine whether the product is current GG-compatible or legacy.
- A Mac permission or security issue remains unresolved.
When contacting support, include the exact model, operating system, GG version, whether the device appears in Engine, the point at which the update failed, and which USB ports, cables, and computers you tried.
