- A protected Windows component is damaged: run DISM, then SFC.
- Antivirus removed the file: verify the original path and publisher before restoring it.
What pscript.dll does
Historically, Microsoft identified PSCRIPT.DLL as its PostScript printer driver for Windows NT. It was part of a printer-driver set that also included a user-interface component and printer-description data.
Current Microsoft documentation more often refers to the modern PostScript renderer as pscript5.dll. That does not prove that every older pscript.dll belongs to current Windows or that every copy should be replaced with pscript5.dll.

The filename is also used by some older third-party software. Legacy Autodesk and Delcam ArtCAM installations, for instance, used a file named pscript.dll for a PostScript interpreter. Therefore, the filename alone cannot identify the correct owner.
pscript.dll is not a Visual C++ Redistributable file. Do not try to fix this error by installing a Visual C++ package unless the error also names a genuine Visual C++ runtime such as vcruntime140.dll, msvcp140.dll, or ucrtbase.dll.
Identify which program owns the file first
Before changing Windows files, identify the executable and path involved. This prevents you from repairing a printer driver when the actual problem is a private application DLL.
Check the error window
Look at the title bar and the wording of the message. Note whether it appears when you:
- Start a particular application or game
- Print a document
- Add or reinstall a printer
- Open the print dialog
- Start the Print Spooler
- Launch Windows after an update or restore
Common messages include:
- “The program can’t start because pscript.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “The code execution cannot proceed because pscript.dll was not found.”
- “There was a problem starting pscript.dll.”
- “Error loading pscript.dll.”
- “pscript.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
These are generic Windows loader messages. They do not establish whether the file belongs to Windows, a printer package, or an application.
Inspect the path
If a copy of the file exists, right-click it, select Properties, and check General, Details, and Digital Signatures.
A file beside the affected application executable is usually a private application component. A file under a printer-driver or spooler directory is more likely to belong to a printer package. A file under C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64 may be a Windows component, but the folder alone does not prove that the file is correct.
On 64-bit Windows:
C:WindowsSystem32normally contains 64-bit system components.C:WindowsSysWOW64normally contains 32-bit system components.
Do not copy an arbitrary DLL into either directory.
Check the publisher shown in the signature. A Microsoft-signed file, a printer-vendor file, an application-vendor file, and an unsigned file require different decisions. Also check whether the application is 32-bit or 64-bit. A 32-bit application may need a 32-bit private DLL even when Windows itself is 64-bit.
1. Reinstall the affected printer driver
Time needed: 10–20 minutes, plus a restart
This is the first fix when the error appears during printing, printer installation, or spooler activity. Printer drivers are installed as packages containing an INF file, catalog, renderer, user-interface components, and other supporting files. Replacing only pscript.dll can leave the package mismatched.
Remove and add the printer again
- Open Settings.
- Select Bluetooth & devices.
- Select Printers & scanners.
- Select the affected printer.
- Choose Remove.
- Confirm the removal.
- Restart Windows.
- Return to Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
- Select Add device.
- Allow Windows to search for the printer.
- Add the printer and print a test page.
If Windows supplies a compatible package, let Windows install the complete driver rather than selecting an individual DLL.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsInstall the manufacturer’s package
If Windows does not find the correct driver:
- Identify the exact printer model and Windows architecture.
- Download the driver only from the printer manufacturer’s official support channel.
- Close open applications.
- Run the manufacturer’s installer.
- Follow its removal or replacement prompts.
- Restart Windows if requested.
- Print a test page.
Do not choose a driver merely because it contains the word “PostScript.” The package must match the printer model, connection method, and Windows architecture.
Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated or mismatched drivers when hunting through several hardware packages manually is impractical; its free scan shows what it finds, while driver installation through the full version is optional, and the exact printer manufacturer package remains the definitive choice for printer-specific files.
Use the Windows Update Catalog for an older package
If the printer is old and the normal wizard does not list its driver, Microsoft documents using Windows Update or the Microsoft Update Catalog.
You can also try the legacy wizard:
- Open Control Panel.
- Select Devices and Printers.
- Select Add a printer.
- Choose The printer that I want isn’t listed.
- Select Add a local printer or network printer with manual settings.
- Choose an existing port or create the appropriate port.
- Select Have Disk.
- Browse to the extracted driver package.
- Select the package’s INF file.
- Complete the installation.
- Print a test page.
Use this route only with a verified driver package for the exact printer. A random INF or DLL is not a substitute for the complete package.

2. Repair or reinstall the application
Time needed: 5–30 minutes
Use this fix when only one older application reports pscript.dll, especially if the file is located beside that program’s executable. Some legacy PostScript-capable applications use their own copy of the filename, separate from Microsoft’s printer-driver components.
Try Windows’ repair option
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Find the affected application.
- Select the three-dot menu.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
- Start the application again.
Repair normally preserves the application’s settings and data. If the error remains, return to the same page and use Reset only if you understand that it may remove application data.
Use the classic repair installer
Some desktop applications do not expose repair controls in Settings.
- Open Control Panel.
- Select Programs.
- Select Programs and Features.
- Right-click the affected application.
- Choose Repair or Change.
- Follow the installer prompts.
- Restart Windows if requested.
- Launch the application.
If repair is unavailable, uninstall and reinstall the application from its original vendor installer or another trusted installation source. For a game or application with a built-in Verify files, Repair, or Verify integrity option, run that function before manually replacing files.
If the application is very old, confirm that you are installing the edition intended for your Windows architecture. A 32-bit application may require its 32-bit support files even on 64-bit Windows.
3. Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
Time needed: 10–30 minutes
Use these commands when the file is associated with Windows servicing locations, several Windows components are failing, or the problem began after an interrupted update or system repair. DISM and SFC are not a reliable repair method for a private DLL installed by a third-party application.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC because DISM can repair the Windows component store that SFC uses as its repair source.
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for DISM to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Repeat the action that originally produced the error.
Do not close the Command Prompt while either scan is running. A successful result means Windows repaired or verified protected system components. It does not prove that a third-party application’s copy of pscript.dll has been restored.
Recommended Free Tools
Outbyte PC Repair can reduce the guesswork when repeatedly running SFC and DISM does not show what changed; its free scan identifies reported issues, while repairs through the full version are optional, and reinstalling the owning application remains the definitive fix for an application-private DLL.
If DISM reports that it cannot find source files, run Windows Update, restart, and try the command again. If SFC reports that it found corrupt files but could not repair some of them, review the repair result, restart, and repeat the driver or application repair rather than copying a downloaded DLL.
4. Check Windows Security quarantine
Time needed: 5–15 minutes
Antivirus removal is a possible cause, but do not assume it was the cause unless Protection History shows that Windows Security removed or quarantined the file.

Time needed: 10–30 minutes
A failed driver installation, Windows update, disk cleanup, migration, or restored backup can leave an incomplete printer or application installation.
First, reinstall the affected package. If the problem began immediately after a system change and a restore point exists:
- Open Control Panel.
- Select Recovery.
- Select Open System Restore.
- Choose a restore point from before the error began.
- Select Next.
- Review the affected programs.
- Select Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart.
You can also open the System Restore interface by pressing Windows key + R, entering:
rstrui.exe
and selecting OK.
System Restore does not replace personal files, but it can remove recently installed drivers and applications. Afterward, reinstall the correct printer or application package if required.
Do not use regsvr32 as a default fix
regsvr32 is for registering DLLs that provide the DllRegisterServer entry point. Printer renderers and application-support DLLs commonly do not expose that function.
Running a command such as this is therefore usually irrelevant:
regsvr32 pscript.dll
It may produce an error saying that the module was loaded but the entry point could not be found. That does not mean the file needs registration.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

Only use regsvr32 when the software vendor specifically instructs you to register that exact DLL and the DLL is documented to support registration. Reinstalling the complete driver or application package is the correct repair for this file in most cases.
Why downloading pscript.dll is unsafe
Random DLL download sites sites can provide:
- The wrong file owner
- The wrong architecture
- An incompatible file generation
- A modified or unsigned binary
- A file with missing dependencies
- A replacement that bypasses normal driver servicing
Copying it into System32, SysWOW64, or an application folder can also create version conflicts and make later updates harder.
There is no verified current Microsoft standalone download intended as a universal replacement for pscript.dll. Safe sources are:
- Windows Update
- The Microsoft Update Catalog
- The printer manufacturer’s official driver package
- The original application installer
- A verified Windows installation or recovery source
The only defensible manual replacement is an exact file extracted from the verified package that owns it, followed by normal package installation.

If the error remains after reinstalling
Identify the executable that is loading the file. Check the dialog title, Event Viewer, application logs, and the installation directory. A message naming pscript.dll can sometimes be the visible symptom of another missing dependency or an incompatible same-named DLL.
Also check:
- Whether the affected program is 32-bit or 64-bit
- Whether the installed driver matches the Windows architecture
- Whether the file has a valid publisher signature
- Whether the printer package includes its INF, catalog, renderer, UI component, and printer-description data
- Whether a recent cleanup tool removed a private application file
- Whether the error occurs for every application or only one
Do not enable random Windows features to compensate for a missing DLL. Windows Features is intended for optional Windows components, not for installing arbitrary printer-driver files. To inspect it, open Control Panel > Programs > Turn Windows features on or off, but change a feature only when the affected software’s documentation specifically requires it.
FAQ
Is pscript.dll a Windows system file?
Historically, Microsoft used PSCRIPT.DLL as a Windows NT PostScript printer driver. However, the same filename is also used by some legacy applications. The path, signature, executable, and triggering action determine ownership.
Why do I see pscript5.dll in current Microsoft documentation?
Microsoft’s current PostScript documentation describes the newer Pscript component as pscript5.dll. Older systems and legacy packages may refer to pscript.dll. Do not rename one file to the other or substitute them manually.
Should I copy the file into System32?
No. A file in System32 is not automatically correct, and manually copying a DLL can introduce architecture and version mismatches. Reinstall the owning package.
What is the difference between System32 and SysWOW64?
On 64-bit Windows, System32 normally contains 64-bit system components and SysWOW64 contains 32-bit system components. The names are confusing, but neither folder is a safe destination for a random download.
Does SFC repair every pscript.dll error?
No. SFC repairs protected Windows components. It will not reliably restore a private copy installed by a printer package or legacy application.
What does “not designed to run on Windows” mean?
It can indicate a wrong architecture, corrupted or truncated file, invalid signature, or an incompatible same-named DLL. The message alone does not identify the cause.
Is this a Visual C++ Redistributable problem?
Not normally. pscript.dll is associated with PostScript printing or certain legacy applications, not the Visual C++ runtime.
Should I restore the file from antivirus quarantine?
Only after verifying the original path, publisher, signature, and source. If those details are unclear, reinstall the owning package and perform a full scan instead.
What is the most likely fix?
If printing or printer installation triggers the error, reinstall the exact printer-driver package. If one legacy application triggers it, repair or reinstall that application. Use DISM and SFC only when the evidence points to Windows component corruption.
