The safest way to update an ASUS ROG Ally BIOS is through MyASUS, Armoury Crate SE, or the official ASUS Windows BIOS installer. Use the manual ASUS Firmware Update/EZ Flash method only when a Windows-based update is unavailable. First identify your exact model: the 2023 ROG Ally is RC71L, while the 2024 ROG Ally X is RC72LA. Their BIOS files are not interchangeable.

Connect the Ally to AC power, make sure its battery is charged, back up important files, and do not shut down or disconnect the device while the firmware is being written.

Identify your ROG Ally model

Do not install an RC71L BIOS on an RC72LA, or vice versa. Always treat the support page for the exact model as the authoritative source for available BIOS releases.

Check your current BIOS version

Using MyASUS

  1. Search Windows for MyASUS and open it.
  2. Select System info.
  3. Expand or locate the Firmware section and read the BIOS version.

Using Windows System Information

  1. Search Windows for System Information.
  2. Open the app.
  3. Find BIOS Version/Date.

From the BIOS screen

  1. Turn off the Ally.
  2. Press and hold Volume Down (-).
  3. Press the Power button.
  4. Keep holding Volume Down until the BIOS screen appears.

You can also enter firmware settings from Windows through Settings > Recovery > Advanced Startup > Restart Now > Troubleshoot > Advanced Options > UEFI Firmware Settings. Menu names can vary slightly by firmware version.

Latest BIOS versions listed by ASUS

As of August 8, 2026, ASUS lists these latest versions on the US support pages:

Model Latest listed version Release date
ROG Ally (2023), RC71L 342 March 7, 2025
ROG Ally X (2024), RC72LA 312 June 11, 2025

Regional ASUS pages and later releases may differ. Check the current support page for your model rather than relying only on these version numbers.

Prepare before updating

  • Connect the original or compatible AC adapter and leave it connected throughout the update.
  • For the EZ Flash method, ASUS specifies at least 20% battery in addition to AC power.
  • Save open work and back up important files.
  • Have your BitLocker or Device Encryption recovery key available. A firmware change can cause Windows to request it after reboot.
  • Do not press the Power button, force a shutdown, disconnect power, or remove a USB drive during the update.

ASUS documents disabling Device Encryption or standard BitLocker Encryption before updating and re-enabling it afterward. If you leave encryption enabled, make sure the recovery key is accessible first. The recovery-key prompt does not mean that the BIOS update erased the drive.

Method 1: Update with MyASUS

Use this method when MyASUS offers a BIOS package for your Ally.

  1. Open MyASUS from Windows Search.
  2. Select System Update.
  3. Allow MyASUS to check for updates.
  4. Select BIOS Update for Windows or BIOS Installer for Windows.
  5. Click Update Selected Items, review the details, and click Confirm to download.
  6. When the download finishes, click Restart.
  7. On the standard UEFI update screen, select Yes. On systems using MyASUS in UEFI, select Confirm.
  8. Wait for the update to finish. The Ally should restart into Windows when complete.

If MyASUS has no System Update tab or does not list a BIOS update, use the ASUS support-site installer or EZ Flash instead. See ASUS’s Windows BIOS update instructions.

Method 2: Update with Armoury Crate SE

ASUS’s current documented Armoury Crate SE route is through Update Center, not the normal Game Library screen.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Armoury Crate SE.
  2. Open Settings.
  3. Select Update Center.
  4. Click Check for Updates.
  5. If a BIOS or firmware update is offered, select it and follow the on-screen prompts.

ASUS’s current documentation lists Armoury Crate SE version 2.1.10.0 or later for the stated ROG Ally-series support. The update name and final confirmation controls can vary by version. Refer to ASUS’s Armoury Crate SE documentation.

Method 3: Run the BIOS installer downloaded from ASUS

This is useful when MyASUS does not offer the update.

  1. Open the ASUS BIOS page for the exact model.
  2. Expand BIOS & FIRMWARE.
  3. Download the package labeled BIOS Update for Windows.
  4. If it is a ZIP file, right-click it and choose Extract All.
  5. Open the extracted BIOS Update application.
  6. Proceed through the wizard: click Next, accept the license agreement, and continue.
  7. Choose Yes, restart the computer now, then click Finish.
  8. When the BIOS-update screen appears, choose Yes, or Confirm on a MyASUS-in-UEFI screen.
  9. Leave the Ally connected to power until the process finishes.

ASUS does not provide a universal command-line syntax for this procedure. The supported Windows process uses the downloaded application and its graphical setup wizard.

Method 4: Update manually with ASUS Firmware Update or EZ Flash

Use this route when Windows updating is unavailable or no Windows BIOS installer is offered.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Prepare the USB drive

  1. Open the exact model’s ASUS support page.
  2. Download the package labeled BIOS for ASUS EZ Flash Utility.
  3. Extract the download.
  4. Format a USB flash drive as FAT32.
  5. Copy the extracted BIOS file to the USB drive’s root directory, not inside another folder.

Run EZ Flash

  1. Turn off the Ally.
  2. Hold Volume Down (-) and press Power.
  3. Keep holding Volume Down until BIOS opens.
  4. If the simplified screen appears, press F7 or choose Advanced Mode.
  5. Select Advanced > ASUS Firmware Update. Some versions call this ASUS EZ Flash 3 Utility.
  6. Select the USB storage device and then the BIOS file.
  7. Select Yes to begin, verify the displayed file information, and select Yes again.
  8. Wait for the update to finish and for the Ally to restart automatically.

ASUS says EZ Flash requires at least 20% battery and AC power. BIOS downgrading is not allowed under ASUS’s current EZ Flash guidance.

Can Windows Update install the BIOS?

On eligible ASUS systems originally supplied with Windows 10 or Windows 11, ASUS may deliver BIOS firmware through Windows Update. Check:

Device Manager > Firmware > System Firmware > Properties

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If Windows has downloaded a firmware update and is waiting for a restart, reboot the Ally while it is connected to power. The update proceeds automatically. See ASUS’s Windows Update BIOS instructions.

If an update fails or the screen appears stuck

Do not assume that a motionless screen means the process has stopped. Do not force a shutdown or disconnect power while the BIOS is being written.

If the Ally shows a recovery or resume-update screen

  1. Connect the AC adapter.
  2. If prompted to resume, wait 60 seconds or select Yes, depending on the message.
  3. Allow the recovery update to finish without interruption.

If the failed-update screen appears

  1. On another computer, download the BIOS file for the affected model.
  2. Format a USB drive as FAT32.
  3. Place the BIOS file in the drive’s root directory.
  4. Turn off the Ally.
  5. Hold the Power button for 15 seconds, until the power LED turns off.
  6. Insert the USB drive and connect AC power.
  7. Turn on the Ally and allow BIOS recovery to start automatically.

If the screen specifies a recommended recovery BIOS version, use that version. If it does not, ASUS says to use the latest BIOS version. Follow ASUS’s interrupted BIOS update recovery instructions.

Which update method should you choose?

  • MyASUS: best first choice when the BIOS update is listed.
  • Armoury Crate SE: convenient when Update Center offers the firmware update.
  • ASUS Windows installer: useful when MyASUS does not show the BIOS package.
  • EZ Flash: the fallback for manual updating, unavailable Windows installations, and some recovery cases.
  • Windows Update: use it when ASUS and Windows provide an eligible firmware update.

A USB drive is not required for every BIOS update. It is required for the manual EZ Flash method and may be required for recovery.
