Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThe standard PS5 update takes only a few menu selections: open Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings > Update System Software. If the download fails, retry it from Downloads/Uploads, then work through Sony’s network, Safe Mode and USB procedures in that order. Do not switch off the console while installation is running.
Before updating: check the version and protect the console
An update can be installed through the PS5’s internet connection or manually with a USB drive. The network method is simplest when the Home screen and Settings are available. The USB method is useful when the console cannot complete a normal download or when Sony’s support instructions specifically direct you to a manual update.

Check which system software is installed
To see the installed version, open Settings > System > System Software > Console Information. Sony displays “Up to date” under the version when the latest available system software is installed. If that message is present, there is no newer update for the console to install at that moment.
Keep power connected during installation
Once installation begins, leave the PS5 powered and connected to its power source. Sony’s update guidance states: Don’t turn off your console during the installation. Interrupting the installation can cause the console to be damaged.
A download that is still in progress can be retried; an interrupted installation can create a much more serious recovery problem.

What you need for a manual update
- A PC or Mac with an internet connection to obtain the official system software file.
- A USB drive formatted as FAT32 or exFAT.
- About 1.1 GB of free space for the update file, according to Sony Interactive Entertainment’s PlayStation Support guidance accessed in 2026. Required space and file versions can change, so check the live PlayStation support page when you download it.
- A controller connected to the PS5 with a USB cable for Safe Mode navigation.
Use only the official PlayStation system software file. A file from an unofficial mirror, a renamed personal file or an incomplete download is not a safe substitute.
Update the PS5 normally from Settings
- From the Home screen, open Settings.
- Select System.
- Open System Software.
- Choose System Software Update and Settings.
- Select Update System Software.
- Allow the PS5 to download and install the update. Do not turn the console off while installation is taking place.
If the console reports that it is already up to date, use Settings > System > System Software > Console Information to confirm the status rather than repeatedly starting the same check.
What to do when a download fails
Start with the least disruptive recovery step. A failed download does not by itself mean that the PS5 needs to be reset or that its storage is damaged.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Retry the individual update
- Open Downloads/Uploads from the PS5 control centre or the screen shown for the failed transfer.
- Highlight the system software update.
- Open its Error Information to see the displayed code and details.
- Choose the option to try the download again.
Record the exact error code before dismissing it. The code determines whether the next useful step is a connection check, a Safe Mode update or a USB file check.
Use a wired connection when the Home screen still works
For a failed update when you can still reach the Home screen, Sony recommends connecting the console to the router with a LAN cable and then trying the Settings update again. A wired connection removes the wireless link between the PS5 and router from this particular download attempt; it does not guarantee that every error has a network cause.
Restart the network equipment if Sony’s error guidance calls for it
Some error-code instructions tell you to restart the modem or router. When following that route, wait at least five minutes before powering the equipment back on, then retry the update. Keep the console’s displayed code with your notes so that you do not mistake an error-specific instruction for a universal diagnosis.
Move to manual update steps after repeated failures
Sony directs users who have multiple failed downloads to its manual update procedure. At that point, use Safe Mode and, if necessary, the USB file method below rather than repeatedly starting the same failed download from the Home screen.
Choose the least destructive update route
| Situation | Recommended route | Data impact |
|---|---|---|
| Home screen and Settings work | Update System Software from Settings | Normal update; no reset |
| One download failure | View Error Information and retry | No reset |
| Repeated download failures | Try a LAN connection, then Sony’s manual procedure | No reset |
| Normal interface will not complete the update | Enter Safe Mode and choose Update System Software | No reset when using the update option |
| Safe Mode online update fails or a file is required | Use the USB update file | No reset when using Update from USB Storage Device |
| Official update routes fail | Consider Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software) | Deletes user data |
This order matters. A reset does not make a routine download faster, and it removes the user data that less destructive steps preserve. Stop at the first route that completes successfully and verify the result under Console Information.
Update system software through Safe Mode
Safe Mode starts the PS5 with a limited menu of maintenance tools. It is the route Sony specifies when a normal Settings update is not completing or when you need to select a USB update file.
Enter Safe Mode
- Turn the PS5 completely off.
- Press and hold the power button. Keep holding it until you hear the second beep.
- Connect the controller to the console with a USB cable.
- Press the controller’s PS button when prompted.
The controller must be connected by USB for Safe Mode navigation. A wireless connection that works on the Home screen should not be treated as a replacement for this step.
Use Safe Mode’s online update option
When the Safe Mode menu offers Update System Software, select it and follow the on-screen instructions. This is still an official update route, but it starts from the maintenance menu instead of the normal Settings interface. If the online update fails again, prepare the USB method rather than interrupting installation or jumping straight to a reset.
Update the PS5 from a USB drive
A manual USB update uses a specific drive format, folder hierarchy and filename. The PS5 will not recognize a file merely because it is present somewhere on the drive.

- WHAT WILL YOU GET: 1PCS 32GB FAT32 USB 3.0 drive, 1PCS USB C 3.0 adapter,1PCS key chain.
Prepare the drive on a PC or Mac
- Format the USB drive as FAT32 or exFAT. Formatting removes existing data from the drive, so copy anything you need before formatting.
- At the top level of the drive, create a folder named
PS5. - Inside
PS5, create a folder namedUPDATE. - Download the official PS5 system software file from PlayStation’s system software support page.
- Save the file inside the
UPDATEfolder with the exact namePS5UPDATE.PUP.
The resulting path must be PS5/UPDATE/PS5UPDATE.PUP. Use the uppercase folder and filename shown by Sony. A file saved at the drive’s top level, inside an extra folder or under a different name may not be detected.
Install the file in Safe Mode
- Safely eject the USB drive from the computer and connect it to the PS5.
- Turn the PS5 off if it is running.
- Hold the power button until the second beep to enter Safe Mode.
- Connect the controller with a USB cable and press the PS button.
- Choose Update System Software.
- Select Update from USB Storage Device.
- Choose OK and let the PS5 verify and install the file.
Do not remove the drive or turn off the console during installation. If the console begins installing, allow the process to finish even if the screen appears inactive for a while.
If the PS5 does not recognize the USB file
- Confirm that the drive is FAT32 or exFAT rather than another filesystem.
- Check that the folders are exactly
PS5andUPDATE, nested in that order. - Check that the file is exactly
PS5UPDATE.PUP, including uppercase lettering. - Make sure the file is inside
PS5/UPDATE, not beside the folders or in a second nested directory. - Download the official file again if the first download may be incomplete or corrupted.
- Reconnect the controller by USB before selecting the Safe Mode option.
These checks address recognition problems; they do not establish that every failure is caused by the USB drive. If the exact error code points to another remedy, follow that code’s guidance instead.

Before returning to the PS5, inspect the drive in the computer’s file manager. The drive should open to the PS5 folder, that folder should contain only the UPDATE folder used for this procedure, and the update folder should contain PS5UPDATE.PUP. Check the full filename rather than relying on an icon or a shortened display. Some computers hide file extensions, so a file that appears to be named PS5UPDATE.PUP can still have an additional extension; use the exact name shown in Sony’s instructions. Do not place multiple update files in different folders and expect the console to choose between them.
The USB route is optional, not a requirement for every PS5 owner. A network update remains the normal choice when it works. A USB flash drive is useful because Sony documents this recovery route, but no particular brand, capacity or transfer speed is required by the instructions beyond having enough free space for the approximately 1.1 GB file.
Error WS-116522-7: steps Sony specifically recommends
WS-116522-7 has its own PlayStation support guidance. Because an error code is more useful than a guess about symptoms, follow the steps that match the route you used:
- Restart the PS5 and try the update again.
- Prefer a wired LAN connection where possible.
- If you are using Wi-Fi, check the console’s placement in relation to the wireless equipment.
- Restart the modem or router, waiting at least five minutes before turning it back on.
- If you are updating from USB, verify the filename and folder location:
PS5/UPDATE/PS5UPDATE.PUP.
Do not apply the USB filename check to a purely network error as though it were a diagnosis. Conversely, do not assume a network restart will fix a USB file that is in the wrong directory.

How to use an error code productively
Write down the code exactly, including hyphens and numbers, and note whether it appeared during download, verification or installation. Then use Sony’s support instructions for that code. The same symptom—an update stopping—can lead to different next steps depending on whether the console was using Wi-Fi, a LAN cable, Safe Mode or USB storage. Avoid replacing a missing diagnosis with repeated resets or random file changes.
Safe Mode options and the data-loss boundary
Safe Mode includes maintenance choices with different consequences. Read the option name and its warning before confirming. The distinction between repairing storage and resetting the console is important:
| Safe Mode option | Effect described by Sony’s guidance | Data consequence |
|---|---|---|
| Repair Console Storage | Repairs console storage without being a reset or system-software reinstall. | Does not erase data. |
| Reset PS5 | Resets the console. | Deletes user data. |
| Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software) | Resets the console and reinstalls the system software. | Deletes user data. |
Back up data before using a destructive option if the console still allows you to do so. A reset is not the next step merely because an update took longer than expected; use it only after the less destructive update and troubleshooting routes have failed.
Do not confuse Repair Console Storage with a firmware reinstall. Sony identifies the storage-repair choice as non-destructive, while both reset choices delete user data. If the menu presents a warning, stop and reread it before confirming; choosing the wrong item cannot be undone by returning to the previous menu.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →When reinstalling system software is justified
Sony identifies Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software) as a last troubleshooting step. It is materially different from updating: the reinstall option deletes user data, so it should not be selected casually or used as a shortcut for a normal firmware download.

- Read the Safe Mode warning for Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software) and confirm that you accept the deletion of user data.
- Use only Sony’s current official reinstall instructions and system software file.
- Leave the console powered throughout the reinstall process.
If the reinstall itself fails, Sony says the console may need repair. Use official PlayStation repair support rather than opening the console or relying on unverified hardware-repair procedures.
A practical decision path
- Settings is available and no error is shown: use the normal Settings route, then verify the result under Console Information.
- A download failed once: open Downloads/Uploads, view Error Information and retry.
- Downloads fail repeatedly: connect the PS5 to the router by LAN cable and retry, then move to Sony’s manual update procedure.
- The Home screen is unavailable or the normal route will not complete: enter Safe Mode with the second-beep procedure and choose Update System Software.
- Safe Mode needs a file or the online method still fails: prepare FAT32 or exFAT media with
PS5/UPDATE/PS5UPDATE.PUP, then choose Update from USB Storage Device. - The update still cannot be completed: consider the destructive reinstall option only after backing up and reading its warning.
- Reinstallation fails: escalate to official repair support.
Common mistakes that stop an update
Turning the console off during installation
A download can be retried, but installation must not be interrupted. Wait for the console to complete its own restart or completion message before disconnecting power or changing cables.
Using the wrong USB path
The required hierarchy is two folders deep: PS5, then UPDATE, then the file PS5UPDATE.PUP. An extra folder level is enough to make a correctly downloaded file invisible to the console.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Changing the filename’s capitalization
Use Sony’s uppercase spelling exactly. Do not add a second extension, a space or a descriptive suffix.
Choosing reset before preserving data
Repair Console Storage does not erase data, while both reset options delete user data. Read the option name carefully before pressing OK.
Treating one error code as a universal explanation
WS-116522-7 has network and USB checks in its Sony guidance, but another code may require a different route. Capture the exact code and use the support instructions for that code.
Using an unofficial or stale file
Download the file from PlayStation’s official system software page each time you prepare USB media. Firmware versions and required file sizes can change, so do not rely on an old file saved from a previous update attempt when Sony has published a newer package.
Skipping the controller cable
Safe Mode navigation requires the controller to be connected by USB. Pairing that works during ordinary PS5 use does not replace the cable requirement at the Safe Mode menu.
How to confirm the update succeeded
After the PS5 returns to the Home screen, open Settings > System > System Software > Console Information. The words “Up to date” under the installed version confirm that the console reports the latest available system software. If the message is absent or the same update prompt returns, note the new error information and continue from the relevant troubleshooting branch instead of repeating unrelated steps.
Frequently asked questions
Can I update a PS5 without a USB drive?
Yes. The normal method is through Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings > Update System Software. USB media is an alternative when the network route fails repeatedly or Sony’s instructions direct you to use a manual update.
How much free space does the USB update file need?
Sony’s current guidance specifies approximately 1.1 GB of free space for the update file. Check the live PlayStation support page because file sizes and firmware versions can change.

Do I need a special USB flash-drive brand?
No brand, capacity or transfer speed is specified in Sony’s instructions. The drive must be formatted FAT32 or exFAT and have enough free space for the official file. A USB drive is optional if the PS5 can update over the network.
What does the second beep mean?
With the PS5 powered off, hold the power button until the second beep to enter Safe Mode. Connect the controller with a USB cable and press the PS button before selecting the update option.
Will Repair Console Storage delete my games and saves?
Sony identifies Repair Console Storage as a non-destructive Safe Mode option that does not erase data. The options named Reset PS5 and Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software) do delete user data.
Should I reinstall system software after one failed download?
No. First view Error Information and retry the download. If failures continue, try a LAN connection, then Safe Mode and the official USB procedure. Sony treats reinstalling as a last troubleshooting step.
What if reinstalling also fails?
Sony says the console may need repair if reinstallation fails. Use official PlayStation repair support rather than opening the console or following unverified hardware-repair instructions.
Is WS-116522-7 always a network problem?
Not necessarily. Sony’s guidance for this code includes restarting the PS5, preferring wired networking, checking wireless placement, restarting the modem or router after at least five minutes, and verifying the USB filename and folder when updating from USB. Follow the step that matches the route you used.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the safest first step when a PS5 update fails?
Open Downloads/Uploads, select the failed update, view Error Information and try the download again. Do not reset the console after a single failed download.
Can I use Safe Mode to update online?
Yes. Turn the PS5 off, hold the power button until the second beep, connect the controller by USB and choose Update System Software.
What exact USB folders and filename does Sony require?
Use a FAT32- or exFAT-formatted drive and create PS5, then UPDATE. Save the official file as PS5UPDATE.PUP, producing PS5/UPDATE/PS5UPDATE.PUP.
Will resetting the PS5 preserve my user data?
No. Reset PS5 and Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software) delete user data. Back up first if possible.
How do I verify that the update installed?
Open Settings > System > System Software > Console Information. Sony displays “Up to date” under the version when the latest available software is installed.
What should I do if the USB update is not recognized?
Recheck the FAT32 or exFAT format, uppercase folder names, exact filename, folder nesting and download integrity. Make sure the controller is connected by USB in Safe Mode.
The Bottom Line
Use Settings first, retry a failed download before escalating, and then move through LAN, Safe Mode and the official USB procedure. Keep the path PS5/UPDATE/PS5UPDATE.PUP exact, never interrupt installation, and reserve Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software) for last because it deletes user data. If reinstallation fails, contact official PlayStation repair support.
