Neither console has a documented, universal ease-of-use winner. The PS5 is organized around a clear split between Games and Media, game-specific hubs, and a Control Center that appears over a running game. Xbox Home is organized around shortcuts, pinned games, and user-created groups; an April 30, 2026 update lets players place up to ten groups on Home. In practice, the PS5 is the better fit if you prefer separated content areas and game information, while Xbox is the better fit if you want to arrange Home around shortcuts and collections.
That is a feature-based recommendation, not a measured usability result. Sony and Microsoft document what their interfaces do, but the cited material does not report a controlled PS5-versus-Xbox navigation test or a numerical ease-of-use score.

What this comparison can—and cannot—prove
The official descriptions establish the available navigation tools, organization models, and accessibility controls. They do not establish how many seconds a task takes, how many button presses are required in every software version, or which dashboard every player will find easier. Console updates, language, region, account state, and the app or game currently open can change what appears.

How the PS5 home screen is organized
Separate Games and Media areas
Sony’s PS5 quick-start documentation divides the home experience into two top-level areas. Games contains games, PlayStation Store, and other game-related apps. Media contains music, video, and other non-game apps. This split keeps entertainment apps from occupying the same primary row as games.
For someone who mainly plays games and only occasionally opens streaming or music apps, the separation is a straightforward mental model: go to Games for play and purchases, and Media for non-game entertainment. Someone who wants every destination mixed into one customizable launch surface may find the split less flexible.
Game hubs, activities, and challenges
Each game can have a hub that gathers information about it. Sony also describes activities and challenges that can be reached through the Control Center. These surfaces are intended to put game-specific information closer to the game itself rather than making you search through a general library or separate help page.
The Tool Desk

The PS5 Welcome hub is customizable with widgets, presets, and backgrounds. It gives the home screen a personalization layer beyond the Games/Media division. The practical choice is whether you want to spend time arranging a set of widgets or simply use the default layout.
Control Center from the PS button
Pressing the PS button opens the Control Center without requiring you to leave the current game. Sony lists Home, Switcher, Notifications, Game Base, Music, Sound, Mic, Accessories, Profile, and Power among the available controls. Availability can depend on context. Some controls can be rearranged or hidden, so the bar does not have to remain in its initial order.

This design puts common system actions in an overlay rather than making you return to the full home screen. It is especially relevant when you want to switch activities, adjust audio or microphone settings, check notifications, manage friends, or power down while remaining aware of the running game.
How the Xbox dashboard is organized
Shortcuts at the top level
Microsoft’s July 2023 Xbox Home description places quick-access destinations at the top level, including Library, Microsoft Store, Game Pass, Search, and Settings. The same design also includes pinned games, groups, personalized game lists, community updates, and media discovery.
That approach treats Home as a launchpad you can shape around the destinations you use most. A player who regularly jumps between a small set of games can pin them; a player with larger collections can arrange groups instead of relying on one long, fixed list.
Groups and the April 2026 expansion
In an April 30, 2026 update, Microsoft said players could place up to ten groups on Home, customize a console color, and disable Quick Resume on a per-game basis. Microsoft said the expanded group feature was available to all players with that update.
Because these are software features, check the console’s current system version before assuming that every account or older installation has exactly the same layout. The ten-group limit applies to groups on Home; it is not a claim that a group can contain only ten games.

Guide Quick Settings
Xbox documents Quick Settings in the Guide as a way to toggle accessibility features without leaving a game or app. This is the Xbox counterpart to the general idea of making important controls available as an overlay rather than forcing a full return to Home.

PS5 and Xbox side by side
| Comparison point | PS5 | Xbox | What the difference means |
|---|---|---|---|
| Primary organization | Separate Games and Media areas, with game hubs | Home built around shortcuts, pinned games, and groups | PS5 favors a category split; Xbox favors a user-arranged launch surface. |
| Common destinations | Games, PlayStation Store, game-related apps, Media apps, and Control Center tools | Library, Microsoft Store, Game Pass, Search, Settings, pinned games, and groups | Both expose core destinations, but they emphasize different starting points. |
| In-game access | PS button opens Control Center; listed controls include Switcher, Notifications, Game Base, Music, Sound, Mic, Accessories, Profile, and Power | Guide Quick Settings provides in-game access to accessibility toggles; Home also supports pinned content and groups | PS5 documents a broader named set of general console controls in its overlay; Xbox documents a focused accessibility shortcut in the Guide. |
| Personalization | Welcome hub widgets, presets, backgrounds, and some reorderable or hideable Control Center controls | Pinned games, groups, personalized game lists, console color, and up to ten Home groups after the April 30, 2026 update | Choose PS5 for widget-and-background customization or Xbox for collection-and-shortcut organization. |
| Accessibility controls | Screen reader, text and display settings, display-area enlargement, controller settings, captions, chat transcription, and mono audio | Guide Quick Settings plus controller-action remapping in the Xbox Accessories app | Both provide documented accessibility paths, but the named features and entry points differ. |
Which is easier for common tasks?
Finding a game
PS5’s Games area gives games a dedicated home area, while Xbox places Library among its top-level shortcuts and supports pinned games and groups. If you prefer a distinct game-first location, PS5’s structure is more immediately legible. If you want a personally curated list that places selected games near the top, Xbox’s pins and groups are the more direct match.
Opening a store or subscription catalog
Both systems expose their stores from Home-level navigation. On PS5, the PlayStation Store is part of the Games area. On Xbox, Microsoft Store and Game Pass are explicitly listed in the Home quick-access menu. The choice is less about whether the destinations exist than whether you prefer category navigation or a shortcut menu.
Searching for something
Xbox’s documented Home design names Search as a top-level quick-access destination. Sony’s cited descriptions emphasize Games, Media, game hubs, and Control Center functions rather than identifying a comparable dedicated Search shortcut in the same Home list. If your routine begins with a search rather than a pinned item, Xbox’s stated layout is the clearer fit.
Switching while a game is running
On PS5, press the PS button to open Control Center and use Switcher or another available control. The overlay is designed to provide console functions without leaving the game. Xbox’s Guide also provides an overlay, with Quick Settings specifically documented for accessibility toggles. The available Xbox Guide entries can vary by context, so do not assume that every action is presented in the same place in every game.

Managing audio and microphone controls
PS5’s documented Control Center list includes Music, Sound, and Mic, along with Accessories. These named controls make the intended path explicit. Xbox’s cited material establishes Guide Quick Settings for accessibility, but it does not provide a directly comparable list of audio and microphone controls in the Home announcement. A player who frequently changes sound or microphone settings in-game has more explicitly documented options on the PS5 overlay.
Checking notifications, friends, or profile actions
PS5 names Notifications, Game Base, Profile, and Power as Control Center options. Xbox’s Home description emphasizes Library, store, Game Pass, Search, Settings, pins, groups, community updates, and media discovery. Both systems have social and account functions, but the supplied Xbox description does not map each one to a single named overlay control, so the exact path can depend on the current dashboard version.
Accessibility: choose by the control you need
PS5 accessibility features
Sony lists controller settings, display-area enlargement, text and display settings, a screen reader, captions, chat transcription, and mono audio. The screen reader reads on-screen text and provides spoken operating guidance. Sony also says that adding Accessibility to Control Center allows quicker adjustments.
Screen-reader language support is limited and tied to the console language. Sony notes that availability can vary by region, so verify the language and regional options on the specific console before relying on a particular voice or translation.

Microsoft documents Quick Settings in the Guide for toggling accessibility features without leaving a game or app. A March 2022 update also described remapping Xbox Wireless Controller actions in the Xbox Accessories app, including remaps that can assist players with disabilities.

The Xbox documentation cited here does not provide a complete feature-by-feature list equivalent to Sony’s screen-reader, caption, chat-transcription, and mono-audio list. That is not evidence that an unlisted feature is absent; it means the published descriptions cover different sets of controls.
How to decide for an accessibility workflow
- Choose PS5 when the specific requirement is a documented screen reader, spoken operating guidance, chat transcription, mono audio, or the ability to place Accessibility in Control Center.
- Choose Xbox when the priority is reaching accessibility toggles from the Guide or remapping controller actions through the Xbox Accessories app.
- For either console, confirm language, region, controller model, and current system software before purchase or setup.
Personalization and maintenance
If you want a curated visual home
PS5’s Welcome hub offers widgets, presets, and backgrounds, and some Control Center controls can be reordered or hidden. This suits a player who wants the home screen and overlay to feel visually arranged.
If you want collections to drive navigation
Xbox’s groups and pins are designed for collection management. After the April 30, 2026 update, Microsoft says up to ten groups can appear on Home, with a customizable console color. This is useful when your preferred organization is “my current games,” “co-op,” “backlog,” or another set of collections rather than a fixed manufacturer category.

When Quick Resume gets in the way
Microsoft’s April 2026 update adds a per-game option to turn off Quick Resume. That is useful for titles that behave poorly when resumed or for players who want a clean launch each time. It is a game-by-game setting, not a statement that Quick Resume must be disabled globally.
Practical navigation recipes
PS5: reach an in-game control
- Press the PS button on the controller.
- Use the Control Center row to select the needed control, such as Switcher, Sound, Mic, Notifications, Game Base, Accessories, Profile, or Power, when that control is available in the current context.
- Rearrange or hide eligible controls if you want frequently used actions closer to your preferred position.
PS5: move between games and media
- Return to the PS5 home screen.
- Use the Games area for games, PlayStation Store, and game-related apps.
- Use the Media area for music, video, and other non-game apps.
Xbox: organize Home around groups
- Open Xbox Home and identify the games or destinations you use most often.
- Pin frequently used games and arrange related content into groups.
- After installing the April 30, 2026 update, place up to ten groups on Home and set a console color if those options are available on your system.
- For a title that should not resume from its previous state, use the per-game option to disable Quick Resume.
Xbox: change accessibility settings without leaving a game
- Open the Xbox Guide while the game or app is running.
- Open Quick Settings.
- Toggle the accessibility feature you need, then return to the game or app.
Xbox: remap controller actions
- Open the Xbox Accessories app.
- Select the Xbox Wireless Controller profile you want to change.
- Use the remapping controls described by the app to assign actions to different buttons or inputs.
- Test the profile in a game before relying on it for a longer session.
Decision guide: which interface fits your habits?
Pick PS5 if these statements sound like you
- You want Games and Media separated at the top level.
- You prefer game-specific hubs, activities, and challenges near the game.
- You regularly adjust sound, microphone, notifications, friends, or power controls from an in-game overlay.
- You need the documented combination of screen reader, captions, chat transcription, mono audio, and display adjustments.
- You would rather personalize widgets, presets, backgrounds, and the order of Control Center controls.
Pick Xbox if these statements sound like you
- You want Library, Microsoft Store, Game Pass, Search, and Settings available as top-level Home shortcuts.
- You organize games into pinned collections and groups.
- You want up to ten Home groups, a custom console color, and per-game Quick Resume control after installing the April 30, 2026 update.
- You want accessibility toggles reachable through Guide Quick Settings while remaining in a game or app.
- You expect to tailor controller actions in the Xbox Accessories app.
Important software-version caveats
The PS5 Games/Media distinction comes from Sony’s quick-start documentation, which is useful for the basic model but may not describe every later interface change. Sony’s feature pages describe the Welcome hub, game hubs, activities, challenges, and Control Center behavior; individual controls can vary by context.
Xbox Home details in this comparison combine a July 2023 design announcement with the April 30, 2026 update. The 2026 group, color, and Quick Resume options depend on receiving that system software. Before publishing or troubleshooting a precise path, check the console’s installed version and the account’s region.
Bottom line
PS5 is easier to understand if your preferred model is “games in one area, media in another, with a rich in-game Control Center.” Xbox is easier to make your own if your preferred model is “put my library, shortcuts, pins, and groups on Home.” Neither manufacturer has published a direct usability measurement that overrides those personal preferences, so the right choice is the one whose organization matches how you actually launch, switch, and manage content.
