Upgrade the Java runtime only when your server software requires or supports Java 25. Paper lists Java 21 for Minecraft 1.20 through 1.21.11 and Java 25 for Minecraft 26.1 and newer. The safe sequence is: confirm the requirement, stop the server, make a complete backup, install a 64-bit Java 25 runtime, point the actual launcher or panel image at it, verify with java -version, then test before reopening the server.
Prefer not to run the server on your own PC? Godlike.Host offers hosted Minecraft Java servers with free DDoS protection and up to three free backups a day.
Changing Java does not convert a world or update the Minecraft server JAR. Those are separate migrations, and the server implementation’s release notes remain authoritative.

First determine whether Java 25 is required
Java 25 is not an automatic upgrade target simply because it is newer. Check both the Minecraft version and the server implementation you run. Paper’s current requirements table lists Java 21 for Minecraft 1.20 through 1.21.11, and Java 25 for Minecraft 26.1 and later. A Paper server on an older supported release can normally remain on Java 21; a Paper build for 26.1 or newer requires Java 25.
| Server software and Minecraft version | Java version listed by the cited requirements | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Paper, Minecraft 1.20–1.21.11 | Java 21 | Do not change runtimes solely because Java 25 exists. Upgrade when your chosen build supports or requires it. |
| Paper, Minecraft 26.1 and newer | Java 25 | Install a 64-bit Java 25 runtime and select it in the launch environment before starting the server. |
| Vanilla, Fabric, Forge, or another implementation | Not stated in the cited Paper table | Use that project’s requirements and release notes; do not assume Paper’s matrix applies. |
If you are moving the server software to a new Minecraft release at the same time, treat that as a second change. Follow the release notes for the server JAR, world format, plugins, mods, and datapacks. A Java replacement by itself does not upgrade any of them.

What changes when you replace Java
Java is the runtime that executes the server process. Replacing Java changes the executable and its libraries, not the data files in the server directory. Your worlds, server.properties, allowlist, operator list, plugin or mod folders, and logs remain where they were unless you separately move or restore them.
- Runtime change: the process starts with a different Java installation, such as a 64-bit OpenJDK 25 distribution.
- Separate server-software change: replacing
paper.jar, a Vanilla JAR, or a mod-loader JAR follows that project’s upgrade procedure. - Separate content change: plugins, mods, datapacks, and worlds may have their own compatibility requirements.
Do not use a Java upgrade as a shortcut for a world conversion. Conversely, do not replace a server JAR and assume that it selected a newer Java binary. These operations can be staged independently, which makes failures much easier to diagnose.
Record the current installation before making changes
Capture the state that works on Java 21. This gives you a comparison point if startup behavior changes and tells you exactly how to restore the old process.
- Write down the Minecraft version and server implementation version.
- Copy the complete startup command, including
-Xms,-Xmx, garbage-collection options, and the JAR filename. - Record the Java path resolved by the current launch method. An interactive shell, a system service, and a container can resolve different binaries.
- List installed plugins or mods and note any that are especially sensitive to server or Java versions.
- For a hosting panel, record the selected Docker image, startup variables, and the account or role that can change them.
- Save a clean console log from a successful Java 21 start.
- Decide where the backup will live. An external SSD is a practical destination for a complete physical copy.
Do this while the server is healthy. A log captured after the migration cannot tell you whether a warning was already present.
Stop the server and make a complete backup
Stop the server cleanly before replacing a runtime, JAR, or panel image. Use the server’s normal stop command or panel control and wait until the process has finished saving chunks and closed. Paper’s migration guidance begins with stopping the server and creating a full backup; that order prevents a live write from leaving an incomplete world copy.

- The server JAR and launch scripts, if you may need to return to the previous process.
- Logs and crash reports, which help identify whether a later failure is caused by Java or an extension.
Keep the Java 21 installation and this backup until the Java 25 process has passed your operational checks. Do not overwrite the only copy while experimenting with a new server JAR or plugin set.
Install a 64-bit Java 25 runtime
Install a 64-bit OpenJDK 25 distribution appropriate for the operating system that actually runs the server. The important properties are the major version and architecture, not a particular vendor name. Paper’s installation example verifies a result beginning with openjdk version "25" and reports a 64-bit virtual machine.
After installation, identify the executable path. If multiple JDKs are present, do not rely on whichever java happens to be first on a user’s PATH. Keep the old Java 21 path available for rollback and write down the new Java 25 path for the launch configuration.
Microsoft’s Java 25 migration guidance recommends reviewing changes between major releases. A direct move from Java 21 to Java 25 is the relevant path here; guidance for older starting points discusses the Java 11, 17, 21, and 25 transitions. That migration material does not replace the requirements published by your Minecraft server implementation.

Point each launch environment at Java 25
Self-hosted shell or script
Use the absolute path to the Java 25 executable when more than one JDK is installed. A Paper-style command is:
/path/to/java25/bin/java -Xms4G -Xmx4G -jar paper.jar --nogui
Keep your existing memory settings unless you have a separate reason to change them. In a script, replacing only the Java executable is the smallest, most reversible edit. If the script uses JAVA_HOME, set it to the Java 25 installation and ensure the script’s PATH resolves that directory. An explicit executable path is less ambiguous.
System service
Services often run as a dedicated account with a different environment from your login shell. Update the service unit’s Java executable or JAVA_HOME setting, reload the service configuration as required by the operating system, and verify from the service context before starting the production process. Testing java -version in your own terminal is not sufficient if the service resolves another binary.
Pterodactyl
In the server’s Startup settings, select the Java 25 Docker image from the Docker Image dropdown. Older Pterodactyl installations may require an administrator account to change the image. Save the setting, confirm the image is still selected after leaving and reopening the page, and then perform the verification and startup checks below.

Verify the runtime that will actually launch the server
Run the version check from the same shell, service account, container, or panel environment that starts Minecraft:
java -version
Confirm that the output reports Java or OpenJDK 25 and a 64-bit VM. A result showing Java 21 means the launch environment still resolves the old binary, even if Java 25 is installed elsewhere. Common causes include an unchanged absolute path in a script, a service-level JAVA_HOME, a panel image that was not saved, or a container that was never recreated with the new tag.

For a panel, inspect the startup log and the image or runtime information exposed by the panel. The check must describe the process environment, not merely the host operating system.
Start with the existing settings and validate in stages
- Start the server with the same memory allocation and arguments used on Java 21.
- Read the complete startup log rather than stopping at the first successful-looking line.
- Check for class-version errors, plugin or mod exceptions, failed datapack loads, authentication errors, and port-binding failures.
- Log in with an administrator account and inspect several worlds, inventories, command permissions, teleportation, and other operations your community relies on.
- Check that scheduled tasks, backups, permissions, voice or map integrations, and other extensions report healthy status.
- Leave the server restricted to administrators or a test group until these checks pass.
- Only then reopen it to all players and continue monitoring the console and logs.
Changing only Java first gives you a clean diagnostic boundary. If you also upgraded the Minecraft JAR, plugins, or mods, test those changes in a separate stage or on a copied server directory so a failure can be attributed correctly.

Choose the upgrade path that matches who controls Java
| Path | Who controls the Java binary | How Java 25 is selected | Backup and rollback access | Separate JAR upgrade? | Best staging approach |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Self-hosted shell or service | You or the system administrator | Absolute Java 25 path, or service JAVA_HOME/executable configuration |
Direct access to files and the old installation; easiest to retain a parallel Java 21 path | Yes. Java does not replace the server JAR. | Clone the directory or stop production, change only the executable, then test the copy or restricted instance. |
| Pterodactyl | The selected container image controls Java | Choose the Java 25 Docker image under Startup; older panels may require an administrator | Depends on panel permissions and host storage; keep an external copy before changing the image | Yes. Change the image and JAR as separate operations. | Duplicate the server or restrict access, select the image, inspect logs, then test plugins and worlds. |
| PufferPanel with Docker | The server definition’s Docker image controls Java | Edit Environment and change the image tag to 25; administrator permissions are required |
Export or copy the server data before editing the definition; restore the prior tag for a runtime rollback | Yes. The image tag does not update the JAR. | Use a copied definition or maintenance window and validate from inside the resulting container. |
In every path, the backup and rollback decision belongs to the operator, not the Java installer. A panel image change can be easy to reverse, but it does not restore files changed by a simultaneous server or plugin upgrade.

Troubleshoot a failed or apparently unchanged upgrade
The server still reports Java 21
- Run
java -versionfrom the exact launch context, not a different terminal. - Inspect the script for a hard-coded Java 21 path.
- Check the service unit’s executable and
JAVA_HOME. - Confirm that Pterodactyl’s Docker image selection was saved, or that PufferPanel’s tag is exactly
25. - Restart or recreate the container or service if the environment caches its previous image or variables.
A class-version error appears
This usually means the process is using an older Java than the server or an extension was compiled for. Verify the runtime first, then check the server implementation’s supported Java version. Do not delete files or restore the world until you know which executable launched the failed process.
A plugin or mod fails after startup
Read the first exception and identify the affected extension. There is no official guarantee that every third-party plugin or mod is compatible with Java 25. Test a copy, check the extension’s own compatibility statement, and update or temporarily remove only the identified extension. Avoid changing several unrelated plugins at once.
Worlds or datapacks fail to load
Stop the server and compare the error with the Java 21 log. Java replacement does not convert a world, and a datapack or world-format problem may instead come from a simultaneous server-JAR upgrade. Preserve the untouched backup while you isolate the change.
Authentication or port errors appear
Check the complete startup log for configuration, firewall, bind-address, and account-service errors. These are not automatically Java failures. Confirm that the new container or service retained the old network and authentication settings before reverting files.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsRoll back without losing the working server
- Stop the failed Java 25 process cleanly if it is running.
- Restore the Java 21 executable or select the previous panel image.
- Start the server against the same data directory and memory settings used before the change.
- If files were altered during a concurrent JAR or extension upgrade, stop again and restore the pre-upgrade backup rather than mixing new files with old data.
- Compare logs to determine whether the cause was the runtime, server JAR, plugin, mod, datapack, or launch configuration.
Keep both the Java 21 installation and the backup until the Java 25 process has been stable through normal player activity. Rollback is safest when the runtime change is isolated; restoring a world should be a deliberate response to identified file corruption or an incompatible software migration, not the first reaction to a wrong Java path.
Keep client requirements separate from server requirements
Minecraft’s July 21, 2026 announcement about client system requirements concerns the hardware and software used by players. It is not a server-runtime requirement and does not, by itself, tell you to install Java 25. For a server, use the requirement table and release notes for the exact implementation and Minecraft version you run.
There is no independent performance benchmark or adoption statistic establishing that Java 25 makes every Minecraft server faster. The reason to migrate is compatibility with the server build, support for the required Minecraft version, or a deliberate operational policy—not an assumed performance gain.
Quick Recap
Final pre-opening checklist
- The implementation and Minecraft version have been checked against their Java requirements.
- A complete, restorable copy of worlds, configuration, plugins or mods, JARs, and logs exists outside the live directory.
- The Java 25 runtime is 64-bit and
java -versionreports version 25 from the real launch context. - The startup command or panel image points to Java 25, while Java 21 remains available for rollback.
- The server starts with the established memory settings and produces no unresolved startup exceptions.
- Administrators have inspected worlds, permissions, commands, datapacks, plugins or mods, networking, and authentication.
- Any Minecraft server-JAR or extension upgrades were tested separately and according to their own release notes.
