Lower view-distance for chunk-loading pressure, tune entity-activation-range for expensive mob AI, merge or despawn item entities when drops are accumulating, and adjust hopper, TNT, collision, or tick budgets only when those workloads appear in timings. Every optimization trades performance for something—simulation detail, farm behavior, item recovery, throughput, visibility, or responsiveness—so test one related group at a time and keep a rollback copy.

What spigot.yml can—and cannot—fix
spigot.yml controls several server-wide limits and simulation distances. It can reduce work caused by loaded chunks, entity AI, item entities, hoppers, explosions, collisions, and overloaded ticks. It cannot automatically repair a leaking plugin, an undersized machine, slow storage, network congestion, or a world-generation spike. A lower value is not inherently better: it may simply move the symptom into slower farms, missing drops, delayed redstone, or visible mob stutter.

That principle matters because the same setting has different consequences on a survival server, a minigame network, a technical-farm world, and a server with many small worlds.
Before editing: establish a baseline
Back up the configuration and record the environment
Stop the server cleanly and copy spigot.yml to a dated file such as spigot.yml.before-lag-test. Also record the exact server software and build, Minecraft version, Java version, plugin list, world count, normal and peak player counts, and whether villagers, mob farms, hoppers, item sorters, or TNT machines are central to gameplay. Configuration keys and defaults evolve; Paper’s current reference includes categories and wake-up controls that are absent from older Spigot examples.

Capture timings under the real workload
Use Spigot Timings while the problem is happening, not immediately after a restart with an empty world. Record the same scenario each time: approximate players, worlds, farms running, and the activity that causes the lag. Look for evidence of:
- chunk loading or generation around moving players;
- entity ticking and AI, especially villagers, monsters, water mobs, raiders, or flying mobs;
- large counts of dropped items or experience orbs;
- hopper transfers and inventory checks;
- TNT or other explosion bursts;
- tile-entity or entity tick time approaching the server’s per-tick budget; and
- a plugin task that remains expensive regardless of these settings.
Change one related group, then retest
- Save the current file as a rollback copy.
- Edit one setting or one tightly related group, preserving YAML indentation and spelling.
- Restart the server; do not assume every value is safely reloadable.
- Repeat the same workload and compare timings, tick time, player experience, and gameplay behavior.
- Keep the change only if it addresses the measured bottleneck without unacceptable side effects.
After each test, inspect farms, villager trading and movement, item pickup and recovery, mob visibility, redstone timing, hopper throughput, and TNT contraptions. There is no independently measured percentage improvement or universal configuration proven to eliminate lag; the examples below are starting points for controlled experiments.
Reference values and what each setting controls
The following defaults come from Spigot’s configuration reference (published in 2016 unless noted). They are not guaranteed to match your build, and a current Paper or Spigot configuration may expose additional keys.
| Setting | Documented default or example | Primary workload | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
view-distance |
10 chunks; reference range 1–15 | Chunks loaded around each player | Lower terrain visibility and less surrounding simulation |
entity-activation-range |
Animals 32, monsters 32, misc 16 blocks | Normal entity AI ticking distance | Distant AI, farms, and behavior may become less responsive |
entity-tracking-range |
Players 48, animals 48, monsters 48, misc 32, other 64 blocks | Entity data sent to clients | Shorter visibility; little or no server-TPS gain |

Reduce chunk-loading pressure with view-distance
How it works
view-distance controls how many chunks the server loads around each player. Spigot documents a default of 10 and constrains the value to 1–15 in that reference. More players spread across more locations can multiply loaded chunks, so lowering this value is useful when timings show chunk loading or generation pressure.
How to choose a value
Reduce it one or two chunks at a time, restart, and test exploration, teleportation, and normal travel with your peak player count. A lower distance can reduce server work, but it is not a remedy for entity AI, hoppers, or a plugin that dominates tick time. If players report that terrain appears too close or loads visibly while traveling, restore the previous value or address world-generation and storage performance instead.

Tune entity activation without breaking farms
Activation range versus tracking range
entity-activation-range determines how far from a player an entity ticks normally. Outside the range, entities tick at a reduced rate. The documented defaults are 32 blocks for animals, 32 for monsters, and 16 for miscellaneous entities. Lowering them can produce a major performance boost when entity AI is the measured problem, but distant mobs may pathfind less often, villagers may behave differently, and farms that depend on active entities can slow or fail.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →An aggressive example from Spigot’s lag guide is:
entity-activation-range:
animals: 8
monsters: 10
misc: 2
Treat those numbers as an experiment, not a universal recommendation. Start with a modest reduction in the category shown by timings, then test villager halls, breeding, iron farms, hostile-mob farms, passive-animal pens, and any redstone mechanism that relies on entity movement. Paper’s current reference separates more categories—including raiders, water mobs, villagers, and flying monsters—and documents wake-up controls. Do not paste an older three-category block over a newer configuration without checking the keys supported by your exact build.
entity-tracking-range is different: it controls how far entity updates are sent to clients. Spigot’s documented defaults are players 48, animals 48, monsters 48, miscellaneous 32, and other 64 blocks. Lowering tracking distance mainly reduces client visibility and bandwidth; the reference specifically says it does not improve server performance. Use it for client-side rendering or network concerns, not as a substitute for activation tuning.
Control item and experience-entity buildup
Merge nearby drops sooner
merge-radius combines nearby item and experience entities. The documented defaults are 2.5 blocks for items and 3.0 blocks for experience. A lag-guide example uses 4 for items and 6 for experience when timings show thousands of drops or orbs. Larger radii reduce entity counts, but they can change where items collect, whether a hopper catches a particular stack, and how XP reaches players. Test sorting systems, mob farms, and collection water streams after every change.

Shorten item lifetime only when loss is acceptable
item-despawn-rate defaults to 6000 ticks in the reference. The lag guide gives 1200 ticks—one minute—as an example for worlds with many loaded entities. A shorter lifetime reduces the time dropped items consume entity processing, but players may be unable to recover items after death, mining interruptions, or temporary server lag, especially when keep-inventory is disabled. Warn players before using an aggressive value and avoid it on worlds where item recovery is a core expectation.
Adjust spawning only when spawning is the bottleneck
mob-spawn-range is the radius, in chunks, around players in which mobs can spawn; the documented default is 4 chunks. Lowering it reduces the area with valid spawn locations, which can reduce workload but can also prevent desired spawns or make farms stop working. Increasing it disperses mobs over a larger area, so they may appear rarer at a particular location while the server still processes them.
Change this setting only when timings and observations show that spawn distribution or spawn processing is the problem. A low value cannot repair a farm built outside the active area, and it is not a general replacement for reducing entity activation. Test hostile, passive, aquatic, and spawner-based farms separately.
Use chunk and growth controls carefully
chunks-per-tick
The documented default for chunks-per-tick is 650. Lowering it can save resources by limiting chunk work per tick, but crop and plant growth can take longer. Measure whether chunk processing is actually expensive, then compare a full growth cycle and any redstone clock that depends on crops or scheduled block updates.
Growth modifiers
Spigot documents growth modifiers with defaults of 100. Its reference explicitly states that changing these values does not improve performance by itself; they are gameplay controls. Do not lower them as a supposed lag fix unless your design goal is intentionally slower growth.

Target hopper-heavy systems
Hoppers perform repeated inventory checks and transfers, so a dense storage system can be expensive even when few players are online. Spigot’s lag guide suggests testing:
ticks-per:
hopper-transfer: 24
hopper-check: 24
hopper-amount: 3
The exact nesting and key names must match the configuration generated by your server version. The hopper-amount value is the maximum number of items moved in one hopper tick cycle. Raising the transfer interval or lowering the amount reduces work and throughput together. Test item sorters, furnace arrays, minecart loaders, filters, and redstone clocks for missed timing assumptions. If hoppers are not present in timings, these changes only add gameplay friction.

Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Cap explosion bursts and crowded collisions
max-tnt-per-tick
max-tnt-per-tick limits how many TNT entities can explode in one tick. The lag guide suggests 10 when player TNT creates burst lag. This is a workload-specific cap: it can smooth a large detonation, but it also changes the timing and output of TNT cannons, quarry machines, and contraptions. Test the largest permitted build rather than a single block of TNT.
max-entity-collisions
max-entity-collisions limits collision processing for entities packed into a small space; the documented default is 8. It is relevant to overcrowded animal pens, mob grinders, and minecart arrangements. Lowering it can reduce collision work, but packed entities may no longer push or interact as players expect. Improving the physical design—fewer entities, wider pens, or better collection—often preserves behavior better than an aggressive global limit.
nerf-spawner-mobs
nerf-spawner-mobs disables most AI for mobs originating from spawners. That can reduce AI work in a spawner room, but it changes the farm itself: mobs may not move, pathfind, or trigger mechanics that rely on normal behavior. Enable it only when spawner mobs are identified as the source and the altered farm behavior is acceptable.

Set tick budgets only as a last-resort containment measure
max-tick-time provides separate tile and entity budgets in milliseconds before the server skips to the next task. The documented defaults are 50 ms for each. Spigot’s lag guide shows tile 8 and entity 16 as an aggressive example. Lower values can keep one pathological workload from consuming an entire tick, but skipped work can produce delayed machines, incomplete updates, and entities that appear to lag or stutter. Because this setting hides overload rather than removing its cause, use it after profiling and keep the rollback file ready.
Recommended Free Tools
If timings show a single plugin or machine consuming the budget, fix or remove that source first. A low budget may make the server look responsive while silently changing simulation results.
A practical tuning sequence
- Classify the symptom. Separate low TPS or high tick time from client FPS, network delay, chunk-generation pauses, and ordinary redstone timing.
- Profile. Run Timings during the peak scenario and identify chunk, entity, item, hopper, explosion, collision, or plugin pressure.
- Choose the narrowest control. Use
view-distancefor loaded chunks, activation ranges for AI, merge or despawn settings for item entities, hopper settings for hopper work, TNT limits for explosions, and collision or spawner settings for those specific populations. - Make a reversible edit. Keep the original file, change one group, and note the date and reason.
- Restart and reproduce. Use the same player count, world, farm state, and duration as the baseline.
- Check gameplay contracts. Verify drops, farms, villagers, mob visibility, hopper throughput, crop timing, redstone, and TNT behavior.
- Keep, refine, or roll back. If the bottleneck did not move or the side effect is unacceptable, restore the prior value before testing another category.
Common mistakes and recovery
- Copying an “optimized” block wholesale: restore the backup, then reintroduce only settings linked to a measured workload.
- Using tracking range to fix TPS: tracking mainly changes client updates; profile activation, chunks, entities, or plugins instead.
- Lowering every range at once: you cannot tell which change helped, and farms can fail in several unrelated ways. Roll back and test sequentially.
- Shortening despawn time without player notice: restore 6000 ticks or choose a less aggressive value if players lose legitimate drops.
- Changing growth modifiers for performance: Spigot states that these do not improve performance by themselves; restore 100 unless slower growth is intentional.
- Ignoring version differences: compare the generated file and the current reference for your exact Spigot or Paper build before adding categories such as raiders, villagers, water mobs, or wake-up settings.
- Blaming spigot.yml for plugin lag: if the same plugin task dominates timings after configuration changes, investigate that plugin, its settings, or its replacement.
Choosing a sensible target configuration
For a general survival server, begin with the documented defaults, profile, and consider only a small view-distance reduction if loaded chunks dominate. For an entity-heavy server, test activation ranges by category and preserve the range needed by farms. For an item-heavy world, test merging before shortening despawn time, because merging reduces entity count without making drops disappear. For technical storage, measure hopper checks and throughput before changing hopper cadence. For TNT events, cap explosions only during the affected activity or accept that large contraptions will run differently. Keep tick-budget changes as containment, not as a substitute for removing the expensive workload.
Version-specific behavior is decisive. Older Spigot examples commonly show three activation categories and historical tracking ranges, while current Paper documentation exposes more categories and wake-up controls. Always compare the keys, defaults, and comments generated by the server you actually run.
Final checklist
- Backup made and exact software version recorded.
- Timings captured during the real lag event.
- One cause-specific setting group changed.
- Server restarted and the same workload reproduced.
- TPS or tick time compared with the baseline.
- Farms, villagers, drops, hoppers, redstone, mob visibility, and TNT checked.
- Rollback completed if the gain was unmeasured or the side effect was unacceptable.
The best spigot.yml is therefore not the most aggressive one. It is the smallest, version-appropriate change that removes measured work while preserving the gameplay your server promises.
