To upgrade eligible gear in World of Warcraft: The War Within, take the item to an item upgrade vendor and check the options and costs shown for that item. Blizzard names Cuzolth in Dornogal as one vendor who can use Valorstones to empower equipment; other item upgrade vendors also provide the service. Exact currencies, costs, and upgrade limits depend on the live game version and the item.
How to upgrade an item
- Check the item. Identify the piece you want to improve and inspect its displayed upgrade options. Not every item necessarily has the same options or limit.
- Visit an item upgrade vendor. Blizzard names Cuzolth in Dornogal as one example, and says other item upgrade vendors can also empower equipment. See Blizzard’s Ghosts of K’aresh content update notes.
- Review the live costs and available levels. Use the vendor interface for that item as the authority: requirements and possible upgrade levels can vary by patch, season, and gear. Confirm the displayed costs before applying an upgrade.
- Choose an available upgrade. If the interface shows the required resources and the next level you want, select the upgrade there. Blizzard’s cited update specifies Valorstones, but it does not establish that the same currency or rules apply to every later game version.
What changed during The War Within Season 3
Season 3’s 11.2.5 Turbo-Boost changes are historical context, not confirmed Midnight rules. Blizzard announced that Hero and Myth gear tracks would each gain two upgrade steps, that the Crest cap would be lifted, and that Valorstones would become Warbound. The announcement also described further recrafting for eligible crafted items using an Augmentation Matrix. See Blizzard’s 11.2.5 content update announcement and Turbo-Boost details.
Ordinary gear upgrades
The Season 3 announcement said Hero and Myth tracks would extend by two steps, from six to eight. That applied to those named tracks in that season; it should not be treated as a universal current upgrade ceiling.
Crafted-item recrafting
For eligible crafted items, Blizzard described using an Augmentation Matrix for additional recrafting. This was a crafted-gear option, distinct from upgrading other equipment through the item upgrade vendor, and its availability should be checked in the relevant version of the game.

Are those rules still current?
No: the cited Season 3 changes should not be presented as verified rules for the current expansion. Blizzard announced that Midnight launched worldwide on March 2, 2026, and noted that some Season 3 rewards would end or become more difficult to obtain at launch. The announcement does not, by itself, establish the complete replacement gear-upgrade system. Check the live vendor interface or current Blizzard guidance for post-launch currencies, costs, vendors, and track limits. See Blizzard’s Midnight launch announcement.
