Use SDU tokens in the in-game Storage Deck Upgrade menu to expand your Backpack and weapon-ammo reserves. Earn more tokens by exploring and completing optional activities; the game’s storage upgrades also include Bank and Lost Loot capacity.
How to upgrade your Backpack and ammo capacity

Open the in-game SDU (Storage Deck Upgrade) menu.

Choose Backpack to carry more unequipped items, or select the upgrade for the weapon-ammo type whose maximum reserve you want to increase.

Spend your SDU tokens on the upgrades you need. Backpack space and ammunition reserves are separate upgrade choices.
The available guide does not establish current token costs per tier, the number of slots or ammo added by each upgrade, or the maximum capacities. Check the values shown in your own SDU menu rather than relying on an assumed total. GameSpot’s SDU guide, dated September 11, 2025, explains the upgrade categories and token sources.

How to get more SDU tokens
Explore the world and take on optional activities. The guide lists these sources of SDU points:
- Safehouses
- Order Silos
- Survivalist Caches
- Evocariums
- Propaganda Speakers
- Lost Capsules
The guide does not give a token amount for each source, so treat these as opportunities to find tokens rather than fixed payouts.
What each storage upgrade does

Which upgrades should you buy first?
GameSpot recommends prioritizing Backpack capacity, then Lost Loot and Bank storage, with ammo upgrades later if ammunition and vending machines are readily available. That is a recommendation, not a required order.

Choose based on the problem you encounter most. If you regularly have to leave useful drops behind, more Backpack space may help; if you miss loot, Lost Loot storage may be more useful. An ammo upgrade can make sense earlier if you rely on a particular weapon type or often run out of its ammunition. How often you return to vending machines is another practical factor.

What changes when you play multiple characters?
In official update notes published March 26, 2026, Gearbox added Shared Character Progression: SDU tokens, collectibles, activities, and Big Map progress apply automatically across characters. This means SDU token progression is shared rather than something you need to earn separately for each character. See the official Borderlands 4 news and update notes.
If an upgrade seems to disappear or a vending machine misbehaves
Official support notes for the December 11, 2025 update, published December 8 and later updated July 2, 2026, list fixes for Lost Loot SDUs failing to persist after save/load, vending reliability, and Backpack SDUs resetting after vending-machine use. If you encounter a similar issue, make sure the game is updated and check the official December 11, 2025 update notes for the fixes. An earlier support notice described cases where an upgrade might not register if a vending machine was opened before item inventory; the later notes list relevant fixes, so that older warning should not be treated as current behavior. 2K’s Borderlands 4 known-issues page provides the earlier support context.
