To start Project M in Pokémon Legends: Z-A, finish the main story, then claim the Project M Mystery Gift containing Mewtwonite X and Mewtwonite Y. Take both stones to Lysandre Café and explore the deepest areas of Lysandre Labs. Completing the mission adds Mewtwo to your team.
What you need before Project M
- Finish the main story; Project M is an extra side mission that requires story completion.
- Claim both Mewtwonite X and Mewtwonite Y through Mystery Gift.
- Connect your Switch or Switch 2 to the internet. The Pokémon Company says the player profile also needs to be linked to a Nintendo Account.
The Pokémon Company announced the gift on December 2, 2025. Its announcement does not give an end date, so check the in-game Mystery Gift menu if you are unsure whether it is still available. The mission is supported in Pokémon Legends: Z-A and Pokémon Legends: Z-A – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition, in both physical and digital versions. Read the official announcement.
Claim the Project M Mystery Gift
- Connect the console to the internet and open the X menu.
- Select Link Play > Mystery Gift > Get via Internet.
- Choose the Project M gift and claim Mewtwonite X and Mewtwonite Y.
- Open the Satchel and check the Mega Stones pocket to confirm that both stones are there.
If Link Play is missing, unlock the Rewards feature in Mable’s Research first. Nintendo Support estimates this takes approximately 1 to 1.5 hours of play time; The Pokémon Company describes Mystery Gift access as taking approximately one hour. These are approximate guidance figures, not a fixed mission requirement. See Nintendo’s Mystery Gift instructions.
Where to find Project M in Lysandre Labs
Travel to Lysandre Café and enter Lysandre Labs. The Pokémon Company’s instructions say to venture into the deepest areas of the Labs, where systems reactivate in response to the two Mewtwonite stones.

For a more specific route, a December 3, 2025 walkthrough from Insider Gaming directs players to take the red elevator to B3F and approach the blue screen. Follow the prompts to activate the locks and continue the sequence. The Café and Labs are the official location guidance; the B3F and screen details come from this secondary walkthrough.
How to battle and catch Mewtwo
- After activating the sequence in the Labs, approach Mewtwo to trigger the battle.
- Complete the battle sequence and throw a Poké Ball to attempt the capture.
- If the capture fails, Insider Gaming reports that the mission resets so you can try again.
No catch-rate percentage is given in the reviewed official instructions or the walkthrough. A retry is reported, but that does not make any individual capture attempt guaranteed.

What Project M rewards
The Pokémon Company says, “If you beat this mission, you’ll be able to add the Legendary Pokémon Mewtwo to your team.” Mewtwo can Mega Evolve into Mega Mewtwo X or Mega Mewtwo Y while holding the corresponding Mewtwonite stone. You need both stones to meet the mission’s gift requirement; X and Y are separate Mega Evolution choices, not different ways to unlock Project M.
