What “upgrade from disc to digital” means on Xbox
Xbox describes the process as claiming a digital entitlement from a supported physical disc, not as an automatic upgrade for every Xbox game. Jason Ronald, Xbox’s vice president for next generation, wrote that players can claim a digital entitlement by inserting a supported disc into an Xbox One or Xbox Series X console and launching the game. The same Xbox announcement says the program starts with thousands of titles and that more will be added, but it also warns that not every title is available.

That distinction matters for Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds. The official Xbox and SEGA pages reviewed for this article show that CrossWorlds supports Smart Delivery, but they do not confirm that this particular disc is included in Xbox’s disc-to-digital entitlement program. Until Xbox publishes title-level confirmation or your console displays the claim flow, eligibility remains unresolved.

Check these requirements before trying
- Use an Xbox One or Xbox Series X with a working disc drive. Those are the consoles named in Xbox’s feature description.
- Have the physical CrossWorlds disc available. The stated process begins by inserting a supported disc; a product code, a digital save, or a Smart Delivery label is not a substitute for that check.
- Use the console on which you intend to test the entitlement. Xbox’s announcement describes the action on the console itself, so the practical eligibility test is the current disc-insertion flow.
- Do not use an Xbox Series S for this procedure. Series S has no disc drive and therefore cannot perform the required insertion step.
- Expect rollout differences. Xbox announced Insider testing beginning August 31, 2026, after the August 26 announcement. Availability can change as the feature expands.
If you have a Series S, the disc route ends before it starts. The Xbox Store’s digital listing is the relevant alternative, subject to the price and availability shown for your region when you check it.

Also distinguish a disc that is unreadable from a disc that is unsupported. A drive error, damaged disc or incompatible console can prevent the game from launching before Xbox has any opportunity to evaluate entitlement status. Testing another known-good game disc can help identify a hardware problem, but it cannot establish that CrossWorlds itself is included in the program.
How to test the CrossWorlds disc-to-digital entitlement
- Start the Xbox One or Xbox Series X. Confirm that the console can read other game discs if you have any available. A drive problem can look like a title-eligibility problem.
- Insert the Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds disc. Wait for the console to recognize it. Xbox’s public description does not provide a universal menu path or a guaranteed wording for the entitlement screen, so use the current on-screen instructions rather than a remembered guide.
- Launch CrossWorlds from the disc prompt or your game library. Launching the game is part of Xbox’s stated claim process.
- Look for an entitlement-claim offer. A qualifying title should present the console’s disc-to-digital flow. Read the confirmation carefully before accepting it; the Xbox announcement does not establish a CrossWorlds-specific redemption deadline, discount, or account-license condition.
- Complete only the claim that the console explicitly offers. If the system identifies the disc as supported and provides a digital entitlement, follow that flow to completion. Keep the disc until you have confirmed that the digital installation starts and the game launches as expected.
- If no claim appears, stop treating Smart Delivery as proof. Exit the game and check the Xbox Store listing for the separate digital edition. No prompt is the practical sign that the current disc, console, or rollout does not provide the entitlement.
Because Xbox has not published a definitive CrossWorlds eligibility list in the cited announcement, there is no reliable button sequence that can force the offer to appear. Reinstalling the game, changing the console generation, or repeatedly inserting the disc cannot create support that Xbox has not enabled.
Do not confuse an ordinary game update with an entitlement claim. A disc game may download patches or a version optimized for your console while remaining licensed through the physical disc. The useful evidence is an explicit Xbox message that a digital entitlement has been claimed, followed by a digital installation or library entry that works as described by the console.

Read the title and edition carefully
Make sure the offer refers to Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds and the Xbox edition you own. The public sources establish that the Xbox Store listing supports Smart Delivery and is optimized for Xbox Series X|S, but they do not document every edition or regional variation that the new entitlement system might accept.
Keep the physical disc during the transition
Xbox’s feature description says the physical disc continues to work as before. It does not say that you may discard or sell the disc after claiming a digital entitlement, nor does it explain whether an entitlement remains attached to your account if the disc is transferred. Keep the disc until Xbox publishes those terms or provides an explicit account-license statement.
Verify the result before relying on it
After the console reports a successful claim, check that the digital installation is available in your library or begins downloading, then start the game. If the console still asks for the disc, or if the installation does not appear, treat the process as incomplete and use Xbox support for the exact message shown. Do not buy a second copy until you have checked whether the original claim is pending; conversely, do not assume that a disc icon disappearing means a permanent digital license has been issued.

Take a screenshot or note the exact wording of any confirmation, error or eligibility notice. Xbox’s announcement does not provide a universal script for every title, so precise wording is more useful to support than a general description such as “it did not work.” Avoid accepting an offer for a different edition or a similarly named product without checking the title, platform and region shown on screen.
Smart Delivery is not the same as disc-to-digital
CrossWorlds is marked as Smart Delivery on its Xbox Store listing. SEGA’s Xbox CrossWorlds save-data FAQ also says Smart Delivery is supported. Smart Delivery generally identifies the Xbox version-selection and entitlement system for supported purchases; in the sources available here, neither statement says that every physical CrossWorlds disc receives a digital license.
The two concepts answer different questions:

In practical terms, “Smart Delivery” is a reason to expect the appropriate Xbox version for an eligible purchase, not a promise that a disc owner receives a download without buying it.
The same caution applies when moving between Xbox One and Xbox Series X. Smart Delivery may identify the versions offered for an eligible purchase, but it does not replace the physical-disc eligibility check. Use the console that has the disc drive and rely on the entitlement message, not on the generation of the hardware alone.
Compare the two access routes

The digital listing is therefore a fallback purchase route, not a confirmation that your physical copy should have converted. Check the live store page for your country before budgeting: the official material does not establish a universal price, promotion, or purchase deadline.
If your goal is to play without inserting a disc, compare the cost of that separate purchase with keeping the physical copy. There is no documented automatic discount for disc owners, and no stated price that applies in every region. A store page can change by country, edition or date, so record the exact product and price before completing checkout.

Troubleshoot the most common outcomes
The console does not read the disc
- Eject and reinsert the disc, checking that it is clean and free of visible damage.
- Try another known-good game disc. If other discs also fail, troubleshoot the console drive rather than CrossWorlds eligibility.
- Confirm that you are using an Xbox One or Series X. A Series S cannot read the disc.
CrossWorlds launches but no entitlement appears
This is not proof that you made a mistake. Xbox says only supported discs qualify and has not identified CrossWorlds as eligible in the cited announcement. Check the current store listing if you want the digital edition; do not infer conversion from Smart Delivery.
The game installs, but the console still requests the disc
That behavior is consistent with ordinary disc-based access and does not by itself demonstrate a digital claim. Look for an explicit entitlement confirmation in the console flow. If none exists, the installation should be treated as disc-dependent unless Xbox provides different instructions for your title.
You are testing during the rollout
Xbox announced Insider testing for August 31, 2026, and said the program would begin with thousands of titles and expand over time. A feature may therefore appear for some supported games or accounts before it is broadly available. If Xbox later publishes a title list, use that list as the authoritative check rather than third-party compatibility claims.

Do not make that decision based solely on a successful installation. The official description says the physical disc continues to work as before, but the reviewed sources do not explain whether a claimed entitlement stays with your account after the disc changes hands. Retain the disc until Xbox states the transfer rule.
You see a price instead of a claim
A normal purchase button or price on the Xbox Store is not an entitlement confirmation. It means the digital edition is being offered as a separate transaction unless the console explicitly identifies a no-cost claim tied to your supported disc. Check the product name and transaction total before accepting anything.
You cannot find the digital version after claiming
Return to the console’s library and the Store listing, then review the exact status message. A download that has not started, a pending transaction or a request for the disc should not be treated as proof of a completed conversion. If support is needed, provide the title, console model and the wording shown by Xbox; do not assume a generic Smart Delivery explanation resolves a disc-entitlement issue.

Do not apply the Nintendo Switch upgrade policy to Xbox
SEGA’s June 9, 2025 release announcement discusses CrossWorlds platform plans and distinguishes Nintendo Switch upgrade arrangements from the Xbox release. A Switch upgrade route cannot be used as evidence for Xbox disc-to-digital eligibility. Xbox hardware, Xbox Store licensing, and Xbox’s supported-disc list govern this procedure.

These unknowns are important because they affect the value of the two routes. The feature’s broad “thousands of titles” starting point does not identify CrossWorlds, and the August 31 Insider date is a rollout milestone rather than a promise that every player can claim the game immediately. Treat a later Xbox announcement or an explicit console offer as stronger evidence than assumptions based on another platform or another title.
The shortest reliable decision
- Have an Xbox One or Xbox Series X with a disc drive? Insert the CrossWorlds disc and launch the game.
- Does Xbox present a disc-to-digital entitlement claim? Follow that on-screen flow and keep the disc until the result is verified.
- No claim? Treat the disc as disc-based. Smart Delivery does not change that conclusion.
- Want a download-only copy anyway? Purchase the separate digital edition through the live Xbox Store listing, after checking your region’s price and availability.
Until Xbox confirms CrossWorlds in a title list or the console presents the claim, the honest answer is that an upgrade is possible only if the current supported-disc flow says so. Everything else—including Smart Delivery, a successful installation or a Switch policy—falls short of proof.

What should I do if no entitlement prompt appears?
