The Laboratory shows the levels you can research and the current cost and time for your village.
Research a spell in the Laboratory

Open your Laboratory.

Choose the spell that shows an available upgrade.

Review the cost and research time shown in the game, then start the upgrade if you want to proceed.

Wait for the timer to finish. The spell’s level is then permanently increased.
Spell levels available to you depend on your progression. Supercell’s April 27, 2026 update notes also report reductions to upgrade costs and times for multiple upgrades at multiple Town Hall levels, so older figures may no longer match your game.

Spell research and Spell Factory upgrades are different
Laboratory research raises the level of a spell you already have access to. Upgrading the Spell Factory or Dark Spell Factory develops the building and can unlock spells or meet their unlock requirements; it does not research a spell’s level.

In Supercell’s June 2025 update, Ice Block is listed as unlocking at Town Hall 14 and requiring Dark Spell Factory level 7.

In Supercell’s February 2024 update, Overgrowth is listed as unlocking at Town Hall 12 when the Dark Spell Factory reaches level 6.
Supercell’s October 2022 release notes said Spell Factories could continue training at half speed while being upgraded. That concerns spell production in the building, not Laboratory research.

Use a Research Potion to speed an active timer, a Book of Spells to finish that timer instantly, or a Hammer of Spells to advance a spell immediately. A Power Potion is only a temporary boost. These effects are listed on Supercell Support’s Magic Items & The Trader page.

Why older spell cost tables may not match your game
Spell research costs and durations vary by spell and level. Supercell’s December 2023 table, for example, listed Lightning Spell level 6 at 1.5M Elixir and 3 days, and level 10 at 16M Elixir and 12 days 12 hours. It listed Healing Spell level 6 at 1.8M Elixir and 3 days, and level 9 at 17M Elixir and 13 days 6 hours. Those are historical examples from 2023, not a complete or guaranteed current price list. Use the cost and timer displayed in your Laboratory for the upgrade you are considering.
Training Potions do not speed Laboratory research
Supercell’s March 24, 2025 Clash Anytime update removed training times for troops, spells, and siege machines, and removed the Training Potion, Training Treat, and Training Boost perks. For Laboratory research, the relevant speed-up is the Research Potion, not a Training Potion.
