To move a Sons of the Forest world to a dedicated server, back up the local save, make sure it is a multiplayer save, upload the numbered world folder to the server’s Saves/DedicatedServer/Multiplayer location, set SaveSlot to that folder’s number, and restart the server in Continue mode. The exact path and control-panel labels vary by host.
Keep the original save untouched until you have joined the server and confirmed that the expected buildings, items, and progression load.

What you can transfer—and what may not follow
A dedicated server can use the numbered world folder created by the game, but the folder must be in the multiplayer save structure the server expects. A co-op world is already multiplayer. A single-player world needs conversion on the local PC before upload; Game Host Bros states, “You MUST convert any single player save to a multiplayer save on your local PC before uploading it to your server” (guide updated May 27, 2026).

The original host’s character, inventory, or other player-specific state may not migrate exactly. Do not discard the original save or carry irreplaceable items only in your character inventory. Store valuables in the world first, then retain the untouched local copy until the dedicated-server copy is verified.

Before you touch the server
- Have access to the server’s file manager or FTP account and its startup settings.
- Know whether your host accepts a folder upload or expects a
.ziparchive. - Record the world’s numbered folder name; that number is normally the value you will use for
SaveSlot. - Plan a maintenance window. All of the provider procedures covered here put the server shutdown before save-file changes.
Step 1: Back up the local save
On Windows, Game Host Bros places local saves at:
%USERPROFILE%AppDataLocalLowEndnightSonsOfTheForestSavesInside that directory, locate the folder named for your SteamID64. The multiplayer world is in that account folder’s Multiplayer subfolder. Copy the entire relevant save folder to a separate location such as another drive or a dated backup directory. Do not edit the only copy.
A separate backup lets you retry conversion, packaging, or uploading without damaging the source. It also gives you a rollback if the server starts a new world or if player data behaves unexpectedly.
Step 2: Prepare the world folder
For an existing co-op world
Open the multiplayer save directory and identify the numbered folder for the world you want. If several folders exist, use their timestamps and contents to distinguish the current world. Leave the folder name unchanged; the server’s slot setting will refer to that number.

For a single-player world
Convert the single-player save to a multiplayer save on your local PC before copying it. The dedicated-server directory is designed for multiplayer saves, so uploading an unconverted single-player folder can result in a world that fails to load or is not available to the server. Keep both the original backup and the converted copy until the migration is complete.

Package the folder
Nodecraft recommends creating a .zip archive before uploading. Archiving keeps the folder together and is useful when a panel cannot transfer a directory tree in one operation. Some panels accept the folder directly, so follow the upload control’s requirements. The archive should contain the numbered world folder at the level the host’s file manager expects, not an extra layer of unrelated parent folders.
Step 3: Stop the server
Use the provider’s Stop or Shutdown control and wait until the status shows that the process has fully stopped. Kinetic Hosting, Nitrado, and Legion Hosting all place shutdown before file edits. Uploading while the game is running can leave the server with a partially written save or cause it to overwrite the copy you just uploaded during the next autosave.
Step 4: Upload to the correct destination
The common logical destination is Saves/DedicatedServer/Multiplayer, but hosts add different root folders. Use the path that matches your panel:

If the panel offers an Upload button, select the zipped archive or the folder as required. After upload, extract the archive in the destination directory. Extraction should leave the numbered world folder directly inside Multiplayer. For example, a correct layout resembles:

.../Saves/DedicatedServer/Multiplayer/3/A common mistake is extracting to Multiplayer/world-folder/3/ or leaving the archive itself in place. The server will not find the slot if the numbered directory is one level too deep.
Step 5: Select the uploaded slot
Set the server’s Save Slot control to the same number as the uploaded world folder. If the host exposes the setting in a web panel, enter the number there. If it uses a configuration file, open dedicatedserver.cfg and set:
SaveSlot=3Replace 3 with your folder’s actual number. Do not rename the world folder to match a setting; make the setting and the existing folder agree.
Some panels also expose Save Mode. Choose Continue rather than a mode that creates a fresh world. Save the configuration after changing it. If the panel writes settings only when the server is stopped, make the change before starting it again.

Step 6: Start and verify the migration
- Confirm that the numbered folder is directly under the server’s
Multiplayerdirectory and that the archive has been extracted if necessary. - Confirm that
SaveSlotmatches the folder number and that Save Mode is Continue where available. - Save the settings, then start the server.
- Join the server and inspect recognizable structures, storage containers, progression, and the surrounding terrain.
- Only after the expected world loads should you make the server copy your primary save.
Nitrado describes the intended result this way: “If everything works, your server should load your local world!” (Nitrado, How To Upload a Sons Of The Forest World, 2023).
How host panels differ
The same game files are presented through different interfaces. The following comparison sticks to differences documented by the providers rather than assuming that one panel’s labels exist in another.

Across hosts, the practical checks are the same: identify the real save directory, place the numbered folder at the correct depth, set the matching slot, and restart only after the files and settings are saved.

The server starts a new world
- Stop the server again.
- Verify that the uploaded numbered folder is directly inside
Saves/DedicatedServer/Multiplayer(with the host-specific prefix). - Check that the folder number exactly matches
SaveSlot, including leading digits if your file manager displays them. - Ensure Save Mode is Continue rather than a new-world option.
- Start the server and test again.
The world is missing from the server
Inspect the extraction level first. If you uploaded world.zip, the archive must be extracted on the server; leaving only the zip file does not create a usable slot. Then check that you uploaded the converted multiplayer save, not the original single-player directory. If the panel’s file manager reports success but the files are absent or incomplete, Nodecraft recommends trying FTP.

The panel rejects the upload
Stop the server, create a zip of the numbered world folder, and upload the archive if the panel cannot transfer directories. Extract it in the multiplayer directory and verify the resulting path before changing the slot. An FTP transfer is another documented fallback for Nodecraft users when the web upload fails.
Buildings load but the original player inventory does not
This can be a player-state migration limitation rather than a bad path. The provider guidance does not promise complete transfer of the original host’s character data. Retrieve valuables from world storage, keep the source save, and avoid deleting the backup until every player has confirmed what carried over.
The instructions do not match the current panel
Control panels are redesigned independently of the game’s save layout, and some provider guides may use an older interface. Look for the server file manager, the save directory, a Save Slot field, and a configuration editor for dedicatedserver.cfg. Use the documented destination as a structural example, then follow the current labels shown by your host.
