Different errors are produced by different parts of the connection. Changing every value at once makes diagnosis harder and can conceal the original problem. Capture a screenshot of the disconnect screen and copy the surrounding lines from latest.log before making a change.

A timeout is not proof of a blocked port. It can mean that the server or client did not finish a modded operation before the vanilla deadline. Conversely, a packet decoder error is normally deterministic: the connection reached the decoder, but the received data exceeded a configured limit or was incompatible with the installed software.

Verify Minecraft, loader, and the RandomPatches file
Open the launcher or instance manager and write down the exact Minecraft version and loader (Forge or Fabric). Check the RandomPatches jar name and version in the instance’s mods folder. Every component must belong to the same Minecraft line and loader.
Forge 1.16 releases
The Forge project listing covers Minecraft 1.16.1 through 1.16.5. Its listed latest Forge build for 1.16.5 is RandomPatches 2.4.4-forge, dated February 21, 2021. That date identifies the release shown for that Minecraft line; it is not evidence that the jar is suitable for a newer or older version.

Do not place a 1.16.5 jar in a 1.16.1 instance, or a Forge jar in a Fabric instance. Remove duplicate RandomPatches jars so that only the intended file is loaded. If a launcher automatically downloaded a different build, replace it with the file made for the pack’s exact version and loader.
Check the rest of the pack
RandomPatches is standalone and has no required dependencies listed for the Forge project. That does not make the whole pack dependency-free. Minecraft, the loader, libraries, content mods, and networking mods still need their normal matching versions. A missing library or a mismatched loader can stop the game before any connection is attempted.
Know what must match between client and server
RandomPatches itself is unusual: its documentation says it may run client-only or server-only, and the client and server may use different RandomPatches versions. That exception applies to RandomPatches’ own patches. It does not override the normal requirement for compatible Minecraft versions, loaders, dependencies, protocols, or gameplay mods.

- A server can use RandomPatches without requiring every player to install it.
- A client can use RandomPatches while joining a server that does not use it.
- Different RandomPatches versions on the two sides can still connect, provided the rest of the installation is compatible.
- Unrelated mods that add packets, registries, channels, or dependencies may still require matching versions on both sides.
This distinction prevents a common mistake: removing RandomPatches from one side may hide a conflict, but it cannot repair an unrelated loader or dependency mismatch. Record the complete mod list when asking the server owner or mod author for help.

Close the game and server before editing unless you are deliberately using the reload command. In the instance or server directory, open config/randompatches.toml. Make a copy of the file first, such as randompatches.toml.backup, so you can restore a known-good configuration.
Read the comments beside each option. They identify whether an option is client-sided, server-sided, or intended for both sides. Preserve TOML syntax: keep section headers, quotation marks, brackets, and commas intact. Change one related group at a time, then reproduce the failure so the result is meaningful.
Reloading changes
On the documented branch, run /rpconfigreload after saving the file. The command must be issued in the environment where the setting is loaded, and it may require the relevant permissions. If the command is unavailable or the option is not hot-reloaded, restart the affected client or server. A restart is also the safest way to confirm that the file parsed correctly.
Fix login, read, and KeepAlive timeouts
Use timeout changes only when the log shows a timeout. The 1.16 Fabric README explains that vanilla connection timeouts are hardcoded and can be too short for slower computers or heavier modded instances. RandomPatches documents longer defaults:

When to change the read timeout
A read timeout is relevant when the connection is established but no data arrives for the configured period. A heavily modded client may pause while loading resources, and a server may stall while generating a large area or completing an expensive login task. Increase the read timeout only as far as needed and test again. If the server never responds, a larger number merely makes you wait longer.
When to change the login timeout
The login timeout covers the server-side login phase. The Forge documentation notes that it generally has more impact than the read timeout. It is the setting to inspect when the disconnect occurs during “joining world,” registry synchronization, or another login-stage operation rather than after you are already playing.
Leave the KeepAlive interval alone unless you have a specific reason
KeepAlive timeout and KeepAlive interval are different. The timeout is how long a response may be absent; the interval controls how often a probe is sent. The README recommends the vanilla 15-second interval, and the Forge documentation warns against increasing it without a specific reason. Raising the interval can make an unresponsive route appear healthy for longer and does not increase available bandwidth.
Handle oversized packet and decoder errors
If the log names a compressed packet, NBT compound, client custom payload, DecoderException, or “payload too large,” skip timeout edits. Inspect the packet-size options in randompatches.toml instead. RandomPatches documents higher limits for compressed packets, NBT compound tags, and client custom payloads; the comments identify which values apply to the client, server, or both.
- Copy the original TOML file to a backup.
- Match the log’s wording to the corresponding option. For example, an NBT-size message calls for the NBT limit, not the KeepAlive timeout.
- Raise the smallest relevant value rather than increasing every packet limit.
- Apply the change on every side named in the option’s comment.
- Reload with
/rpconfigreloadwhere supported, or restart the affected process. - Retest the same action that produced the packet, such as joining the world or opening the affected screen.
Packet limits are safeguards as well as compatibility settings. Excessively large values can allow malformed or abusive data to consume more memory, so keep the change targeted and revert it if the error was caused by a mismatched mod rather than a legitimate large payload.

Resolve the Connectivity mixin conflict
Connectivity’s project documentation explicitly describes an overlap with RandomPatches: Connectivity can apply first and cause RandomPatches to crash. This is a mod conflict, not a general Internet outage.
With the game stopped, open config/randompatches.toml and add this exact entry:
mixin_blacklist = ["ServerPlayNetHandlerKeepAlive"]Keep the line as valid TOML and do not add a second mixin_blacklist key. If that key already exists, merge the class name into its existing list rather than creating a duplicate. Save the file and restart, or use /rpconfigreload on a branch where the setting is reloadable.
Connectivity does not have to be installed on both sides for its own features, so check each side’s mods folder when diagnosing the conflict. If the crash continues, remove or update one overlapping networking mod temporarily and compare the new crash report. The name of the first failing mixin in the report is more useful than repeatedly changing timeout values.
Separate a local problem from a network problem
Once versions, configuration, packet limits, and mixin conflicts have been checked, isolate the path between the game and the server. Change one environmental variable at a time and record the result.

- Repair or reinstall the instance. Use the launcher’s repair function if available. If files remain suspect, make a clean copy of the instance and install the same modpack again rather than layering replacement jars over a damaged directory.
- Temporarily close VPN and antivirus software. Security filters and VPN adapters can delay or drop modded traffic. Test briefly with protection disabled only when you understand the risk, then re-enable it and create an appropriate exception instead of leaving it off.
- Check the hosts file and proxy settings. An incorrect hosts entry or system proxy can send the hostname to the wrong address. Reset only entries you can identify as incorrect and keep a backup before editing.
- Try another network. A phone hotspot or another trusted connection is a useful comparison. If the problem disappears there, investigate the normal router, content filter, or ISP rather than changing RandomPatches values indefinitely.
- Use the server’s direct IP address and port. This bypasses hostname resolution and helps expose DNS-specific failures. If direct IP works while the hostname fails, inspect DNS rather than packet limits.
- Compare IPv4 and IPv6 behavior. A broken or incomplete IPv6 route can cause long waits while other services appear normal. Test the address family supported by the server and review operating-system network settings if only one path fails.
A failure that follows the same computer across multiple networks points toward the local instance, proxy, DNS, IPv6, antivirus, or another installed program. A failure limited to one network points toward that network’s router, filtering, or ISP path. A failure affecting every player on the server should be investigated by the server administrator, including server load and the server-side log.
Use logs to prove which fix worked
After each change, save the new latest.log and compare it with the original. Note the timestamp of the disconnect, the first error in the chain, and whether the client reached the “joining world” stage. A later stack trace can be a consequence of an earlier timeout, so start with the earliest relevant exception.

- For a timeout, include the timeout category, the side that disconnected, and the server’s activity at that moment.
- For a packet failure, include the complete decoder message and the named packet, NBT, or payload type.
- For a startup crash, include the crash report’s mixin or class name and the installed versions of all networking-related mods.
- For a configuration issue, include the relevant
randompatches.tomlvalues without omitting the option names.
What to send when escalating
Report unresolved problems through the RandomPatches GitHub issue tracker and test the latest RandomPatches release available for your Minecraft version before filing. A useful report contains:
- Minecraft version and loader.
- RandomPatches file name and version.
- Whether RandomPatches is installed on the client, server, or both.
- The full disconnect or crash text.
- The relevant section of
latest.logand any crash report. - The changed
randompatches.tomloptions, including the exactmixin_blacklistline if Connectivity is present. - The other networking or packet-related mods installed.
- Whether direct IP, another network, or a clean instance changed the result.
Do not upload credentials, session tokens, private IP information, or unrelated personal data. A precise reproduction step—such as “disconnects during registry synchronization after selecting this server”—lets a maintainer distinguish a login timeout from a packet or mixin failure.
