The complete upload process
An Arma 3 dedicated server does not normally use the editable mission folder from Eden. It reads a packed multiplayer mission file with the .pbo extension. The reliable sequence is:

Recommended Free Tools
- Export or pack the multiplayer scenario into a PBO.
- Confirm the filename follows
<mission name>.<world name>.pbo. - Identify the MPMissions directory used by the running server.
- Transfer the PBO into that directory.
- Point
class Missionsat the filename without.pbo. - Restart the server, or reload its configuration if your administration method supports that, and select the mission.
For example, a file named ConvoyTraining.Altis.pbo belongs in MPMissions, while the configuration template is ConvoyTraining.Altis. The extension is deliberately omitted in the template value.
Prepare the mission PBO
Export from Eden
Open the scenario in Arma 3’s Eden Editor and use the multiplayer export function. Select the destination appropriate to your installation and confirm that the exported result is a single PBO file. The filename should contain both your mission name and the world (map) name, in this form:

<mission name>.<world name>.pbo
A valid example is MyMission.Altis.pbo. The world portion must identify the terrain on which the scenario was made. Keep the spelling, capitalization, underscores and punctuation consistent when you later enter the template in the server configuration.
Pack an existing mission folder
If you have a mission directory rather than an exported PBO, use a PBO-packing utility that is compatible with Arma 3. Pack the mission’s contents into one archive and retain the same naming convention. Do not upload the uncompressed editor folder as a substitute unless your hosting provider explicitly documents support for unpacked missions; the standard dedicated-server workflow expects the PBO.
Check the archive before transfer
- Verify the file ends in
.pbo, not.pbo.pbo. File extensions can be hidden by the operating system. - Open the archive with your PBO tool and confirm that the mission files are inside the archive’s root rather than nested under an extra directory.
- Keep the filename simple and exact. If you rename the file after packing, use the same final name in
server.cfg. - Include all assets the scenario actually uses, but remove unnecessary large pictures, music and sounds before packing.
Connected players receive multiplayer missions from the server. Large embedded media therefore increases the amount of data the server may need to send before or during connection. The official export guidance recommends avoiding unnecessarily large files.
Find the server’s active MPMissions directory
Default installation path
On a dedicated server using the normal layout, custom mission PBOs go in the installation’s MPMissions directory. This is the folder the server scans for mission templates. Do not assume that the MPMissions folder next to your local game client is the one used by the dedicated instance; locate the directory belonging to the server installation.

When -mpmissions changes the location
A server started with the -mpmissions=... startup parameter uses that alternative MPMissions directory instead of the default. The path is interpreted relative to the Arma 3 directory unless the startup configuration specifies another form supported by the host. If you upload to the default folder while the process has -mpmissions set, the mission will not appear because the server is reading a different directory.
Check the launch script, service definition, command line, or hosting-panel startup parameters for the exact value. Also check which -config parameter is active; editing a different configuration file has the same symptom as uploading to the wrong folder.
Multiple servers on one machine
For separate instances, treat each configured MPMissions path as an independent library. Upload the PBO to the path used by the intended instance, then verify that instance’s -config and -mpmissions arguments. This prevents a mission from appearing on one server while remaining invisible on another.
Transfer the PBO to the server
| Transfer method | What you need | Best use | Important check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hosting control panel | Panel login and file-manager access | Managed game-server hosts where the provider exposes MPMissions directly | Confirm the panel is showing the active instance’s MPMissions folder, not a general account directory. |
| SFTP or FTP | Host, port, account and a transfer client supplied by the administrator | Self-managed servers or hosts that provide remote file access | After upload, refresh the directory and verify the complete filename and file size. |
| Local file copy | Operating-system access to the dedicated-server machine | A server you administer directly | Copy into the MPMissions path used by the running process, including any custom -mpmissions path. |
Use only the transfer method approved for your server. Upload the PBO itself, not a ZIP containing it, unless the panel provides an explicit extraction workflow. A successful upload means the PBO is visible directly inside the active MPMissions directory.

Control-panel workflow
- Stop the server if the host recommends stopping it before changing mission files.
- Open the file manager and navigate to the instance’s
MPMissionsdirectory. - Choose the panel’s upload command and select the prepared
.pbofile. - Wait for the transfer to finish; do not close the page while a progress indicator is active.
- Refresh the directory and check that the filename is exactly what you prepared.
SFTP/FTP workflow
- Connect with the credentials and protocol supplied by the administrator.
- Browse to the server installation and then to the active MPMissions path.
- Transfer the PBO in binary mode when the client offers a transfer-mode choice.
- Refresh the remote listing and compare the remote name and size with your local copy.
- Disconnect only after the client reports a completed transfer.
Add the mission to server.cfg
Use the class Missions template
The server configuration’s mission cycle is defined in class Missions. Each mission entry uses a template value that matches the PBO filename without the extension. For the uploaded file MyMission.Altis.pbo, the relevant value is:
class Missions
{
class MyMission
{
template = "MyMission.Altis";
difficulty = "Regular";
};
};
The outer class name is an identifier in the configuration; the value that must match the file is template. If you do not need to alter the difficulty, use the difficulty convention already present in your configuration or omit that line according to the configuration format you are using. The critical requirement is an exact template-to-PBO match.
Add to an existing mission cycle
If class Missions already contains entries, add another mission class inside the existing block rather than creating conflicting top-level blocks. Keep each class name unique and preserve the semicolon and brace structure used by the file. A cycle containing two missions might look like this:
class Missions
{
class FirstMission
{
template = "FirstMission.Altis";
difficulty = "Regular";
};
class ConvoyMission
{
template = "ConvoyMission.Stratis";
difficulty = "Veteran";
};
};
Here, the server must find FirstMission.Altis.pbo and ConvoyMission.Stratis.pbo in its active MPMissions directory. A typo in either the terrain name or mission name prevents that entry from resolving.

Save the right configuration file
Dedicated servers can have multiple configuration files. Identify the file passed by the active -config startup parameter and edit that file. Saving a correct class Missions block in an unused configuration has no effect on the running process.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Reload, restart and select the mission
- Save the configuration after adding the mission entry.
- Restart the dedicated server, unless your administration method explicitly supports reloading the configuration without a full restart.
- Watch the startup or server log for configuration errors and confirm that the intended config and MPMissions paths are being used.
- Join the server as an administrator or through the normal multiplayer lobby.
- Open the mission-selection screen and look for the uploaded scenario under its terrain. Select it and start the mission.
A restart alone cannot make a PBO appear if it was uploaded to the wrong directory, and a correct upload cannot be selected if the template points to a different filename. Treat the file path, template value and active configuration as one chain to verify.
Optional HTTP mission delivery
Arma 3 also documents an HTTP download method for mission files. In that arrangement, the configuration uses a download value in the form:
download = "missionname.Altis.pbo";
The HTTP documentation specifies an Expected-Size based on the corresponding file in MPMissions. This is an optional delivery mechanism, not a replacement for placing the mission PBO where the server expects it. Configure it only when you operate the required HTTP endpoint and can keep the advertised size synchronized with the actual file.

Why the mission is not showing
| Symptom | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| The mission is absent from the list. | The PBO is in a different MPMissions folder than the running server uses. | Check the launch parameters for -mpmissions, then upload to that exact path. |
| The file is present but the configured mission cannot be selected. | The template does not exactly match the PBO name without .pbo. |
Copy the base filename from the file and use it verbatim in template = "...";. |
Changes to server.cfg do nothing. |
You edited a configuration other than the one passed with -config, or the server has not reloaded it. |
Verify the active startup argument and restart or reload the configuration. |
| Players wait a long time while joining. | The mission contains unnecessarily large pictures, sounds or other assets that the server sends to clients. | Reduce oversized media, repack the PBO and upload the revised file. |
| The server is running, but remote players cannot connect. | NAT or firewall rules do not forward the required game and Steam ports. | Forward the ports configured for the server and allow them through the host firewall, then test connectivity again. |
| The PBO appears in the folder but is ignored. | The archive may have an incorrect extension, an extra directory level or a malformed pack. | Confirm it is a real PBO, inspect its root contents with a PBO tool and repack it if necessary. |
Distinguish a path problem from a naming problem
First, inspect the remote directory: if the file is not there, investigate the transfer and startup path. If it is there, compare the complete filename with the template value character by character, excluding only .pbo. This two-step check avoids changing configuration when the actual error is a misplaced upload.
Check the map name
The world name is part of the expected filename. A mission exported for one terrain and renamed with another terrain’s suffix may not resolve as intended. Use the name produced by the export or by the mission folder’s established naming convention, then use that same base name in the configuration.
Choose an efficient workflow
| Decision | Convenience | Control | When to choose it |
|---|---|---|---|
| In-game/Eden export | Fastest for a mission you are editing in Eden | Uses the editor’s export process and naming | Choose this when the scenario is already open and you need a standard multiplayer PBO. |
| External PBO packing | Requires a separate packing tool | More control over an existing folder and its contents | Choose this when a mission is maintained outside Eden or must be repacked after manual changes. |
| Default MPMissions path | Simplest to locate on a standard installation | Less isolation when several instances share an installation | Use it for a single conventional server. |
Custom -mpmissions path |
Requires checking startup parameters | Separates mission libraries between instances | Use it when multiple servers or administrators need independent mission sets. |
| Hosting panel upload | Most convenient when the host exposes the folder | Dependent on provider labels and permissions | Use it on managed hosting; follow the provider’s current interface documentation. |
| Direct SFTP/FTP or local copy | More setup | Direct visibility of the server filesystem | Use it when you administer the machine or the host provides remote file access. |
Pre-launch checklist
- The scenario is exported or packed as one multiplayer
.pbo. - The filename follows
<mission name>.<world name>.pbo. - The PBO is directly inside the MPMissions directory read by this server.
- Any
-mpmissionsoverride has been checked. - The edited configuration is the file selected by
-config. - Every
templatematches its PBO filename without.pbo. - The server has been restarted or its configuration has been reloaded.
- Large, unnecessary media files have been removed or reduced.
- Required game and Steam ports are forwarded when the server is behind NAT or a firewall.
Worked example
Suppose Eden exports CoastalRescue.Altis.pbo. The server starts with a custom parameter, -mpmissions=instances/co-op/MPMissions, and uses configs/co-op.cfg through -config. Upload the PBO to instances/co-op/MPMissions, not to a similarly named default folder. In configs/co-op.cfg, add:
class Missions
{
class CoastalRescue
{
template = "CoastalRescue.Altis";
difficulty = "Regular";
};
};
After restarting the instance, the mission should be available in the multiplayer selection screen. If it is not, verify the custom path and active config first, then compare CoastalRescue.Altis.pbo with CoastalRescue.Altis in the template.
The Bottom Line
For a dependable upload, pack the multiplayer scenario as <mission>.<world>.pbo, place it in the MPMissions directory selected by the server’s startup parameters, and use the matching extension-free name in class Missions. Restart or reload the active configuration, then troubleshoot paths, names and network forwarding in that order.
