Java and Bedrock worlds are not interchangeable server files. Upload a Java save to Java server software, or a Bedrock world to Bedrock Dedicated Server or Bedrock Realms. Before replacing anything, make a dated backup and stop the destination server.
Godlike.Host offers hosted Minecraft Bedrock servers with its own game panel, SFTP access and free DDoS protection, if you would rather not host it yourself.
For Java, place the complete save folder in the server installation and select it with the server configuration, commonly level-name. For Bedrock Dedicated Server, copy the complete world folder into worlds/, then set level-name to that folder’s exact name. Realms avoids file administration: the owner downloads a backup and uses the world-load or Publish controls to replace a slot.

Choose the right destination first
A world save is tied to its edition. Java Edition uses Java server software and a Java save structure; Bedrock Edition uses Bedrock Dedicated Server or the managed Realms service. Uploading a Java folder into a Bedrock server, or the reverse, does not convert it.
| Route | World and server relationship | How you transfer it | Who manages the server |
|---|---|---|---|
| Java dedicated server | Java save loaded by Java server software | Copy the save folder into the server installation and select it in configuration, normally with level-name |
You manage files, software, backups and networking, or use a host’s control panel |
| Bedrock Dedicated Server | Bedrock world loaded by the official Bedrock server package | Copy the complete folder into worlds/ and set level-name to the folder name |
You manage the server files, permissions, backups and network ports |
| Realms | A managed cloud slot stores the selected world | Use the owner’s world-load controls, or Bedrock Editor’s Download and Publish controls | The service handles the server process; you control worlds and slots through the game interface |
Official server software for both Java and Bedrock is free to download. Running a dedicated server still requires a computer or hosting plan with enough storage, memory, uptime and network access.

Prepare the world and destination
Make a rollback copy
Copy the entire source world to a separate location before uploading. Give the copy a date and keep it outside the destination server directory. If a replacement is interrupted or a server writes over the world during transfer, this copy is your rollback.
- For Java, preserve the folder containing
level.dat, region, playerdata, advancementsand any dimension folders such asDIM-1andDIM1. - For Bedrock, preserve every item in the world folder, including its database and any world-specific packs or settings.
- Do not rely on a screenshot or a launcher listing as a backup; you need the actual files.
Stop the destination before replacing files
Shut down the server cleanly and confirm that its console or control panel reports it has stopped. Copying into a running world can produce partial writes, missing chunks or a save that looks valid but fails on the next startup. Realms is managed differently, but you should still download the current Realm world before replacing its slot.
Check edition, version and capacity
- Match Java clients to the Java server version, and Bedrock clients to the Bedrock server version. A world made by a newer version may require upgrading; a server that is too old may refuse it or behave unpredictably.
- Confirm the destination has enough free disk space for the uncompressed world and for temporary upload files.
- On a hosted server, verify that your account can write to the server directory. On Linux, the server process must be able to read the world files and write new chunks.
- If the world uses mods, plugins, behavior packs or resource packs, install the compatible server-side components separately. Uploading a save does not install those dependencies.
Upload a world to a Java server
1. Locate the Java save
Single-player Java saves normally live in the game directory’s saves folder. Common locations are %APPDATA%.minecraftsaves on Windows, ~/Library/Application Support/minecraft/saves on macOS and ~/.minecraft/saves on Linux. A launcher profile can use a different game directory, so open the profile’s installation location if those folders are empty.
Open the candidate folder and check for level.dat directly inside it. That file, together with the region and player-data folders, identifies the save root. Do not upload only the region folder or only the visible files from inside it.

2. Create and initialize the server
- Download the official Java server JAR that matches the Minecraft version you intend to run.
- Create a new, dedicated server folder and place the JAR there. Keeping server files separate from the client’s
.minecraftdirectory makes backups and upgrades safer. - Install a Java runtime compatible with that server version.
- Run the JAR once from the server folder. A command such as
java -jar server.jar noguiis typical; replaceserver.jarwith the actual filename. - Open the generated
eula.txt. Read the agreement, then changeeula=falsetoeula=trueif you accept it. - Start the server again and let it finish creating its normal files and a temporary default world.
The official Java setup guidance requires the first run, EULA acceptance and a subsequent normal start. If the process stops immediately, read the console before copying your world; a missing or incompatible Java runtime is usually a setup problem, not a bad save.
3. Stop the server and replace its world
- Use the server console’s normal stop command or the host panel’s stop control. Wait until the process exits.
- Identify the server’s current world directory. A freshly initialized vanilla server commonly creates a directory named
world, but the configured name may be different. - Upload the complete local save folder with the host file manager, SFTP, FTP or a local file copy. Preserve its contents and permissions.
- Choose one of two safe layouts: rename the uploaded folder to the name already selected by the server, or keep its name and change the server configuration to match it. Do not leave the old generated world in place if the configuration still points to it.
- Check the final path. The save files must be one level below the server directory, not inside an extra wrapper folder. A correct layout looks like
server-folder/MyWorld/level.dat, notserver-folder/MyWorld/MyWorld/level.dat.
4. Select the save with level-name
Open server.properties and set the world name to the folder you want loaded, for example level-name=MyWorld. Vanilla Java commonly uses this property; modified server implementations may expose an equivalent setting under a different label. Use the exact folder spelling, including capitalization where the operating system is case-sensitive.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsSave the file while the server is stopped. If the property still points to world while your upload is named MyWorld, the server can generate or load a different world and make the upload appear to have failed.
5. Start, verify and connect
- Start the server and watch the console from the first line through world preparation. Look for the selected folder name, successful spawn preparation and any errors about missing files or permissions.
- Join with the same Minecraft Java version as the server. Test the spawn area, a few known builds, inventories and important dimensions before inviting other players.
- Stop and restart once more after verification if you changed configuration, then make a fresh backup of the now-running server world.
Players connecting from another computer may need firewall and router configuration. The official Java FAQ identifies port 25565 for the usual Java server setup, but the actual reachable address also depends on your firewall, port forwarding and host network. Give players the server address and port that your configuration exposes, not merely the local computer name.

Upload a world to Bedrock Dedicated Server
1. Prepare the official Bedrock server
- Download the official Bedrock Dedicated Server package for a supported Windows or Ubuntu Linux system.
- Extract it into an empty server folder. Do not mix it with a Java server installation.
- Launch the server once using the executable included with the package. On Windows this is commonly
bedrock_server.exe; on Linux use the package’s Bedrock server executable according to its permissions. - Allow the first run to generate
worlds/,server.propertiesand the other required folders, then stop the server cleanly.
Microsoft’s Bedrock Dedicated Server documentation states: “Worlds created by Minecraft: Bedrock Edition can be copied to Bedrock Dedicated Server.” That copy is a Bedrock-to-Bedrock operation; it is not a Java conversion.
2. Find the correct local Bedrock world
Bedrock stores local worlds under the game’s minecraftWorlds directory. Folder names there can be cryptic identifiers rather than the name shown in the game menu. Open each candidate folder’s levelname.txt until you find the world you want.
Copy the complete identified folder. Keep its database and all companion files together. If you are moving it between computers, compress the folder first or use a file-transfer service, then extract it on the server machine. Do not edit individual database files or copy only visible chunks.
3. Copy the world into worlds/
- Confirm the Bedrock server process is stopped.
- Inside the Bedrock server installation, open
worlds/. - Copy the complete local world folder into that directory.
- Rename the copied folder to a simple name such as
Survival01. Avoid spaces, punctuation and special characters while you troubleshoot; the name must be used exactly in the configuration. - Check the final layout. The world’s files should be directly inside
worlds/Survival01/, not inside another nested copy ofSurvival01.
4. Set the Bedrock level-name
Open the Bedrock server’s server.properties while the server is stopped and set level-name=Survival01, replacing the example with the exact folder name you chose. Save the file without adding quotation marks or a trailing path.

The folder name and property value must match character for character. If you leave the default value, the server may create a new world beside your upload; if the value contains a typo, the existing world will not be selected.

5. Start and test the Bedrock server
- Start the Bedrock executable and monitor its console for world-loading messages or errors.
- Connect from a Bedrock client with a matching version and confirm that the terrain, builds and player data are present.
- If the server creates a new world instead, stop it before doing anything else. Recheck the
worlds/path, folder nesting and the exactlevel-namevalue.
For players connecting from other machines, review the firewall rules and the ports listed in the Bedrock server’s server.properties. Bedrock’s port values are configuration-dependent rather than a single universal number. The address players use must include the externally reachable port allowed by the host and router.
Use Realms instead of administering a dedicated server
Realms is a managed cloud option. You do not copy files into a server directory or configure a firewall; the owner manages the world assigned to a subscription slot through the game interface. The exact labels can vary by edition and client version, but the safe sequence is always to preserve the current Realm before replacing it.
Standard Realms world replacement
- Open the Realm management screen as the Realm owner.
- Download the current Realm world first. This creates a local rollback copy in case the replacement is wrong or players need the previous state.
- Use the world-selection or load-world control to choose the local world you want on the Realm.
- Confirm the target slot and the replacement warning. Wait for the upload to complete before closing the game.
- Join the Realm and check the spawn, inventories and important areas. Keep the downloaded backup until the replacement has been accepted by everyone who needs it.
Bedrock Editor Realms projects
For a Bedrock Editor project, select the Realm and destination slot, use Download to create a backup, then choose Publish and upload the project to the selected slot. Microsoft Learn defines Publish as: “Publishes the current project to the selected Realms slot using the chosen settings.” Verify that you selected the intended slot before confirming, because publishing changes the cloud copy players use.

Java-to-Bedrock and Bedrock-to-Java transfers
An upload is not a format conversion. Official Java and Bedrock server documentation describes each edition’s own save workflow, not a direct method for loading one edition’s files in the other edition’s server. Treat cross-edition migration as a separate, tool-dependent project.
Keep the untouched original, export or copy it before attempting any converter, and test the converted result in an isolated server. Conversion can change terrain, entities, inventories, command behavior, redstone mechanics, dimensions, packs and player identifiers. Do not overwrite the only copy of the source world while experimenting.
Troubleshooting an upload that fails
The server starts a new world instead of my upload
- Stop the server immediately so it does not add more files to the wrong world.
- Check that the save root contains its expected files directly. Remove an extra level such as
world/world/level.datorworlds/Survival01/Survival01/. - Confirm that
level-namematches the folder name exactly. On Bedrock, this is the most common selection error. - Ensure the configuration file you edited belongs to the server instance you actually start; hosts sometimes provide separate directories for different instances.
The server refuses to start after the upload
- Read the first error in the console, not only the final shutdown line.
- Verify the Java runtime and server version for Java, or the supported operating system and executable for Bedrock.
- Check file permissions, ownership and available disk space. A transfer can appear complete while the server cannot read or extend the database.
- Restore the dated backup if the world was damaged during transfer, then retry with the server stopped and a fresh copy.
The world loads, but builds or players are missing
- Confirm you copied the complete folder rather than only a region or database subfolder.
- Check that you uploaded the intended save by reading Java’s world contents or Bedrock’s
levelname.txtbefore transfer. - Make sure the client is joining the same edition and version used to create the save.
- If packs, mods or plugins supplied blocks or entities, install compatible dependencies; the bare world folder cannot provide them.
Players outside the host cannot connect
- Allow the configured server executable through the host firewall.
- Check router port forwarding and whether the host is behind carrier-grade NAT or another network boundary.
- Give players the external address and configured port, not
localhostor an internal address. - Test locally first. If local connections work but remote ones fail, the world upload is complete and the remaining issue is networking.
The Realm replacement went wrong
Use the backup downloaded immediately before replacement. Load or publish the previous world back to the same slot, then verify it from a player account. Do not delete the backup until the rollback has been tested.
A repeatable maintenance routine
- Announce a maintenance window and stop players from changing the world.
- Download or copy a dated backup of the current destination world.
- Stop the server, or use the Realm download control before replacing a slot.
- Transfer the complete source folder without nesting or renaming it unexpectedly.
- Set the destination’s world-selection setting and verify permissions and free space.
- Start the server, read the console, and test a representative area, player inventory and each important dimension.
- Keep the pre-upload backup until the new copy has survived a restart and a normal play session.
The reliable rule is simple: use the server software that matches the world’s edition, copy the complete save while the destination is stopped, select the exact folder name, and keep a rollback copy before every replacement.
