Controls vary from one Roblox experience to another.
Use a controller on Xbox or PlayStation
Launch Roblox, open an experience, and use its in-game Help tab to view the controls. Roblox notes that experiences can have different rules, controls, and mechanics, so check the map for the experience you are playing rather than relying on a universal layout.
Xbox
- Open the Roblox menu while playing an experience.
- Go to Settings, then select Help to view the controller map.
Roblox’s Xbox experience guide explains that controls and mechanics differ between experiences.
PlayStation
- Press Options to open the Roblox menu.
- Press R1 to select Help and view the controller map.
Roblox’s PlayStation experience guide likewise notes that controls vary by experience.

Connect a controller to a PC or laptop
Roblox accepts gamepad input, including from Xbox and PlayStation controllers, and says PC or laptop players may connect a Bluetooth gamepad. Whether a particular controller works depends on the computer and its connection support. Roblox does not provide one universal pairing walkthrough for every operating system and controller, so use your device’s own USB or Bluetooth setup instructions.
- Connect a compatible controller to the computer using USB, or pair it through the computer’s Bluetooth settings.
- Start Roblox and join an experience.
- Try the gamepad controls and check any in-experience help or instructions for that experience’s map.
Roblox Creator Hub’s gamepad input documentation describes how Roblox handles gamepad input, but it is developer documentation rather than a device-specific pairing guide.

What the buttons usually do
Many experiences use familiar gamepad conventions, but these are common mappings rather than guaranteed controls:
- First thumbstick: character movement.
- Second thumbstick: camera movement.
- Button A: accepting prompts or jumping.
- Button B: canceling prompts or performing a secondary action.
- Triggers: primary actions, such as shooting.
An experience may assign buttons differently or support only some gamepad actions. On console, use its Help map; on PC, look for the experience’s own controls or instructions.

Chat with a controller on console
Console chat uses the on-screen keyboard. On Xbox, open Menu, choose Chat, enter a message, then press R2 to send. On PlayStation, press Options, choose Chat, enter a message with the on-screen keyboard, then press R2 to send. The console instructions are in Roblox’s Xbox guide and PlayStation guide.
If the controller does not work
- Check the device’s connection settings to confirm the controller is connected.
- Try the controller in an experience and use that experience’s instructions or Help map to check its gamepad support and button assignments.
- If you are on Xbox or PlayStation, open the Help tab using the steps above.
- On a computer, consult the device maker’s pairing instructions if you cannot connect the gamepad; the steps depend on your operating system and controller.
Roblox’s general gamepad guidance does not establish a single fix for every controller or connection problem.

Do you need to buy a controller?
No. A controller is optional; you can use one you already own if it is supported by your device and the experience. Roblox documents gamepad input, but does not provide a complete list guaranteeing that every controller works on every computer or in every experience. Check device compatibility and the experience’s controls before buying hardware.
