Equip a charm in an open charm slot and it activates automatically when its listed trigger occurs, provided it has enough charges. Read the charm’s trigger, effect, duration, and charge details before choosing it; you do not manually activate charms.
How charms work
A charm is a defensive item that responds to a specific condition, such as taking a particular kind of damage. When its trigger condition occurs and it has enough charges, it grants the listed effect for the stated duration. For example, the Path of Exile 2 Wiki lists Ruby Charm as triggering when you take fire damage from a hit and granting 25% fire resistance for four seconds. That example describes Ruby Charm, not a standard duration for every charm. Path of Exile 2 Wiki
How to equip a charm
- Open your character equipment and locate the charm slots on your belt.
- Place the charm in an available slot. Belt and passive-skill sources can provide slots, and the Ancient Vows quest is listed as granting one. Path of Exile 2 Wiki
- Read the charm’s trigger and effect text so you know what situation it addresses.
- Check its charge capacity and the charges required per use; without enough charges, it cannot trigger.
Charms are automatic once equipped. You do not press a button to activate one. The Wiki says two equipped charms of the same type will not both activate at once, while different charm types can activate simultaneously. Path of Exile 2 Wiki
How charges work and how to restore them
A charm spends charges when it activates. The Wiki lists killing monsters, using Wells, and activating checkpoints as ways to restore charges; unequipping a charm removes its charges. Path of Exile 2 Wiki

Charm balance has changed between patches. In its April 15, 2025 notes for patch 0.2.0f, Grinding Gear Games said the maximum charges and charges per use were halved for all charms except Golden Charm. The same notes increased Stone Charm’s base duration from 2.5 seconds to 3 seconds. These are patch-specific changes, so older guides may show different values. How to choose the right charm
Match a charm to the danger you are actually encountering rather than treating one option as universally best. Compare the following details on the item:

- Trigger: What must happen for the charm to activate?
- Effect: Which damage type, ailment, or condition does it counter?
- Charge cost and capacity: How often can it activate before it needs charges restored?
- Duration: How long does its protection last after activation?
For instance, the Ruby Charm example is relevant if fire hits are a concern. Other charms should be judged by their own trigger and effect text; the available references do not establish a complete current ranking.

Slots can come from belts and passive skills, and the Wiki identifies the Ancient Vows quest as another source. The Wiki’s three-slot maximum should be treated as historical guidance, not a confirmed current cap: in the April 2025 0.2.0f announcement, Grinding Gear Games said it planned to expand the possible maximum to six through Bijouborne. The cited announcement does not confirm whether that planned expansion later shipped. Check the slots shown in your current game rather than relying on an older guide.
