The best way to use an original GameCube controller on a Windows PC is with a USB GameCube adapter. For Dolphin Emulator, set a compatible adapter to Wii U/Switch mode, install the WinUSB driver with Zadig when Windows requires it, and select GameCube Adapter for Wii U in Dolphin. For ordinary PC games, PC/DirectInput mode or an XInput-compatible controller is usually more practical.
What you need
- An original wired GameCube controller and a compatible USB adapter.
- A wireless GameCube-style controller with its compatible USB receiver, if applicable.
- Dolphin Emulator if you are playing GameCube games.
- Zadig only when the Windows native-adapter setup requires the WinUSB driver.
An original GameCube controller cannot connect directly to a PC. Its connector and signals are not USB, so an adapter is required to translate them into a protocol the computer can use.
If a GameCube controller is not recognized, Outbyte Driver Updater can optionally scan for missing or outdated USB drivers.

| Goal | Recommended setup | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Play GameCube games in Dolphin | Wii U/Switch-compatible adapter in native mode | Windows may require Zadig and WinUSB |
| Use two original controllers | Two-port adapter such as the Mayflash W013 | Fewer ports; Windows vibration may require a driver |
| Use four controllers | Four-port adapter such as the Mayflash W012 | More mode and firmware considerations |
| Play many ordinary Windows games | PC/DirectInput mode or an XInput-capable controller | May require manual mapping and may not reproduce native Dolphin behavior |
| Avoid adapters | USB or Bluetooth GameCube-style controller | Analog triggers, stick gates, rumble, and latency may differ from the original |
A native Wii U/Switch-mode adapter is optimized for Dolphin. A PC-mode adapter usually behaves like a generic DirectInput device, which can be easier for older PC games but may expose inconsistent button labels, trigger axes, or rumble support.
Best method for Dolphin on Windows
1. Connect and select the adapter mode
Close Dolphin and other controller utilities. Connect the adapter directly to the PC rather than through an unpowered hub. Set a compatible third-party adapter to Wii U or Switch mode. On Mayflash units, the mode switch is important: PC mode and Wii U/Switch mode use different setup paths.

2. Install WinUSB with Zadig
Dolphin has native support for Nintendo’s Wii U and Switch GameCube adapter and compatible third-party adapters. On Windows, the adapter is generally identified as WUP-028 with USB ID 057E 0337. Follow Dolphin’s official adapter guide and use the verified official Zadig project download.
- Launch Zadig with Dolphin closed.
- Open Options → List All Devices.
- Select
WUP-028with USB ID057E 0337. - Choose WinUSB.
- Select Replace Driver.
Do not install UsbDk as a current alternative. Dolphin’s documentation says UsbDk is no longer supported in current versions. Older Dolphin releases used it in a limited version range, but it is not the modern default.

- Open Dolphin and go to Options → Controller Settings, or open the GameCube controller configuration screen used by your release.
- Set the relevant GameCube port to GameCube Adapter for Wii U.
- Enable the physical ports you want to use.
- Open Configure, if available, and enable rumble if required.
- Start a game and test every connected controller.
Native mode normally configures the GameCube layout automatically and supports calibration, rumble, wireless controllers, and compatible bongos. The adapter’s physical port order can be easy to misread, so test each port rather than assuming the leftmost connector is the first port based on the adapter’s orientation.
Dolphin’s built-in support for the official adapter has been available since version 4.0-4599. Exact menu labels can vary between Dolphin releases and operating systems.

- Open Dolphin’s GameCube controller settings.
- Set the port to Standard Controller.
- Click Configure.
- Choose the adapter from the Device menu.
- Select each input field, then press the corresponding button or move the relevant axis.
- Save the profile.
Check the analog sticks, C-stick, L and R trigger axes, and Z button individually. Some generic adapters expose triggers as digital buttons or assign unusual axis names. Use Dolphin’s configuration screen to confirm that an axis moves smoothly and returns to its center or resting position.

Using a GameCube controller with Steam and other PC games
A controller working in Dolphin does not automatically work in every Windows game. Dolphin’s native adapter mode exposes the adapter’s native interface, not necessarily an Xbox-style XInput controller. Many modern PC games expect XInput, while older games and emulators may accept DirectInput.
For broader Windows compatibility, choose an adapter with a reliable PC/DirectInput mode or a GameCube-style controller that explicitly supports XInput. Steam Input may translate some generic devices, but support varies by adapter, driver, game, and Steam configuration. It is not a guarantee that every Steam game will recognize the controller.

If a Dolphin game is launched through Steam, first launch it directly from Dolphin and confirm that the controller works. Steam Input, overlays, and additional remapping layers can interfere with native adapter access. Avoid running vJoy, a GameCube USB adapter utility, and Dolphin’s native adapter mode at the same time unless you specifically need that arrangement; Dolphin warns that vJoy-based tools can conflict with native support and may remove features such as native rumble.
Linux and macOS
On Linux, Dolphin generally does not need a special adapter driver when it is built with libusb support. If Dolphin cannot access the adapter, the distribution may need a udev permission rule. Use the rule supplied by your distribution or Dolphin’s current documentation rather than applying a broad rule that grants unnecessary USB access.
macOS instructions are version-sensitive. Dolphin’s adapter guide includes macOS-specific caveats, including procedures that apply only to older system versions. Follow the current instructions for the installed macOS and Dolphin release rather than copying an old kernel-extension recipe.
Verify the setup before troubleshooting games
- Dolphin lists the adapter or selected input device.
- Each physical controller appears on the expected Dolphin port.
- A, B, X, Y, Start, and Z register correctly.
- Both analog sticks reach their full range and return to center.
- L and R register as analog triggers, not only digital buttons.
- The C-stick returns to center.
- Rumble works when enabled.
- The controller remains connected after launching a game.
- Background input works if you have enabled that option.
If the controller works in Dolphin’s configuration screen but not in one game, investigate the game profile, Steam Input, an overlay, or another input layer before changing the adapter driver.

Troubleshooting
The adapter does not appear in Zadig
- Confirm that the adapter is in Wii U/Switch mode.
- Enable Options → List All Devices in Zadig.
- Look for
WUP-028, not just a generic USB device. - Try another direct USB port.
- Close Dolphin and all controller utilities, then reconnect the adapter.
- If necessary, remove the existing device and driver through Windows Device Manager and repeat the setup.
Dolphin says the device is busy
Close other emulators, controller utilities, vJoy-based software, and games that might have claimed the adapter. Use one input method at a time. A different Dolphin input backend can also claim the device; restarting Dolphin after closing the competing program may release it.
Mayflash works in PC mode but not Wii U/Switch mode
Check the physical mode switch, reconnect the adapter after changing modes, and confirm that Zadig was run while the adapter was in Wii U/Switch mode. Dolphin must be set to GameCube Adapter for Wii U, not Standard Controller. Firmware behavior can vary by model; consult the manufacturer’s W012 firmware documentation before updating.

The adapter may be in DirectInput mode, the game may expect XInput, or the axes may have been mapped incorrectly. Recheck the axis assignments in Dolphin. If the adapter presents triggers only as digital buttons, software remapping cannot recreate a true analog trigger range.
Rumble does not work
Confirm that native adapter mode and rumble are enabled. In PC mode, install the manufacturer’s driver if required; Mayflash states that Windows vibration support may require one. Also close competing drivers and remapping utilities that may intercept force feedback.

Steam detects the controller but the game does not
Steam detecting a device is not the same as Steam translating it into a protocol the game accepts. Test the game outside Steam, then review that game’s Steam Input setting. For the most consistent compatibility across Windows games, an XInput-capable controller is usually a better fit than a native Dolphin adapter.
Only one controller is detected
Enable the required ports in Dolphin, verify the adapter is in native mode, and check the adapter’s physical port order. Do not assume that two adapters or multiple driver layers will cooperate automatically; test with one adapter and one input method first.
The controller disconnects during play
Move the adapter to a direct USB port, avoid an unpowered hub, close software that may reclaim the device, and test the cable and controller separately. If the problem occurs only through Steam, test by launching Dolphin directly.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I plug a GameCube controller directly into a PC?
No. An original controller requires a USB adapter that converts its proprietary connector and signals into a PC-readable interface.
Do I need Zadig for every adapter?
No. Zadig is mainly needed for the Windows native Wii U/Switch adapter path when Dolphin cannot use the default driver. PC-mode adapters and standard USB controllers may not need it.
Is Wii U/Switch mode or PC mode better?
Wii U/Switch mode is generally better for Dolphin’s native support. PC/DirectInput mode is often more convenient for ordinary Windows games, but may require manual mapping and may not provide the same features.
Can I use a wireless GameCube controller?
Yes, if it has a compatible USB receiver or works through an adapter supported by Dolphin. Compatibility depends on the specific controller and mode.
