The Pro Controller is the easier option: pair it in macOS, verify it under Game Controllers, then configure it in the game or Steam. Joy-Cons pair separately, and macOS or a game may not combine them into one conventional gamepad.
Pairing is not the same as universal game support. A controller can appear in macOS yet fail in a particular game because of the game’s input standard, Steam Input settings, button mapping, or limited Joy-Con support.
Compatibility at a glance
| Controller | Bluetooth | USB option | Mac recognition | Main complication |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Original Switch Pro Controller | Yes, normally | Usually, with a data-capable cable | Often recognized by macOS and Steam | Game-specific mapping and button prompts |
| Left Joy-Con | Yes, separately | Not normally through its rail | May appear as an individual controller | Limited buttons and unusual orientation |
| Right Joy-Con | Yes, separately | Not normally through its rail | May appear as an individual controller | Limited buttons and unusual orientation |
| Two original Joy-Cons | Pair each one separately | Requires specialized hardware | May remain two independent devices | macOS does not universally merge them into one gamepad |
| Switch 2 Pro Controller 2 or Joy-Con 2 | Do not assume original-model support | Varies by model and software | Not explicitly confirmed by Apple’s current Mac documentation | Separate compatibility question |
These instructions concern the original Nintendo Switch Pro Controller and original Joy-Cons. Apple’s current controller documentation does not explicitly guarantee support for Switch 2 controllers. A third-party Mac utility claims support for newer hardware, but that is not the same as an Apple compatibility guarantee.
Apple says controller buttons and features vary by controller and app, so rumble, motion controls, lights, battery reporting, the Capture and Home buttons, and other features may not work everywhere.

- Take your game sessions up a notch with the Nintendo Switch Pro Controller
- Handheld Nintendo Switch gaming at a great price
- Comes with charging cable (USB C to USB A)
Before you begin
- Charge the controller.
- Make sure Bluetooth works on the Mac.
- Install a reasonably current version of macOS. Apple’s listed controller-customization settings require macOS Ventura 13 or later.
- Close the game while pairing and configuring the controller. Relaunch it after macOS recognizes the device.
- For wired use, have a USB-C or USB-A-to-USB-C cable that supports data, not just charging.
- Check whether the target game supports controllers. Steam Input or another Mac-compatible mapper may help, but cannot turn every keyboard-and-mouse game into a perfect controller experience.
Apple recommends keeping the Mac and controller software current. If a connection remains unreliable, forgetting the device and pairing it again is one of the standard recovery steps.
Pair an original Switch Pro Controller over Bluetooth
- Wake the Pro Controller.
- Hold the small SYNC button on the controller’s top edge for several seconds. The player LEDs should begin cycling or flashing.
- On the Mac, choose Apple menu → System Settings → Bluetooth.
- Wait for Pro Controller to appear in the nearby-devices list.
- Click Connect.
- Open System Settings → Game Controllers and select the controller.
- Press the face buttons, shoulder buttons, sticks, and D-pad directions to confirm that inputs are detected.
- Launch the game only after the controller is connected.
Nintendo documents the physical SYNC-button procedure for pairing the Pro Controller with a Switch. On a Mac, the Bluetooth menu is the host-specific part of the process; the same SYNC button places the controller into discovery mode.
Apple’s Mac Games guide covers Bluetooth pairing and the Game Controllers settings panel.
Pair original Joy-Cons with a Mac
Each original Joy-Con is a separate Bluetooth controller. macOS may therefore show the left and right controllers as separate devices rather than presenting them under one combined name.
Repeat these steps for each Joy-Con:
- Remove the Joy-Con from the Switch or grip if it is attached.
- Hold the small SYNC button on the rail edge until the indicator LEDs begin moving.
- On the Mac, open Apple menu → System Settings → Bluetooth.
- Select the Joy-Con when it appears.
- Click Connect.
- Repeat the process for the other Joy-Con.
After pairing, check whether the game sees one controller or two. A single Joy-Con has fewer controls than a full gamepad, and its layout may not match the orientation expected by the game. The left and right Joy-Cons also have different button and stick arrangements.

Do not confuse this with Apple’s Buddy Controller feature. Buddy Controller lets two connected controllers control the same player, which is useful for accessibility or assistance. It does not universally transform two Joy-Cons into one Nintendo-style dual-stick controller.
Connect the Pro Controller by USB
A wired connection can avoid Bluetooth interference and is useful when troubleshooting.
- Connect the Pro Controller to the Mac with a known data-capable USB cable.
- Wait for macOS to identify it.
- Open System Settings → Game Controllers.
- Check whether the controller appears and responds to button presses.
- If it does not appear, try another cable, USB port, or USB-C adapter.
- If both Bluetooth and USB connections are active, disconnect or forget the Bluetooth connection if the game selects the wrong device.
Not every cable carries data, and not every game exposes identical controller features over USB and Bluetooth. Joy-Cons also do not become a normal wired pair simply by attaching them to a standard charging grip; wired use generally requires specialized hardware or software support.

Apple documents both Bluetooth and wired controller connections on Mac and notes that some Macs require an adapter.
Verify that macOS sees every input
Pairing only proves that the Mac established a connection. Before troubleshooting a game, verify the controller at the operating-system level:

Controllers Lite is an optional Mac App Store diagnostic utility. Its listing claims support for several Switch controller models, including newer models; treat those compatibility claims as the developer’s claims rather than Apple’s guarantee.
macOS’s Game Controllers panel and a tester are useful for separating a connection problem from a game problem. If every input works there but not in one title, the controller and Bluetooth connection are probably not the underlying failure.

Steam is usually the most practical route for Mac games because Steam Input can provide layouts and translation when a game’s native controller support is inconsistent.
- Pair the controller with macOS first.
- Open Steam and choose Steam → Settings → Controller.
- Confirm that Steam detects the Pro Controller or Joy-Con.
- Enable the relevant Nintendo or Switch controller support or Steam Input option if Steam presents one.
- Open the game’s controller settings.
- Use the game’s Controller Layout or Steam Input configuration.
- Relaunch the game after changing the input mode.
- Test both the game and the Steam overlay.
Steam’s current Big Picture documentation lists the official Nintendo Switch Pro Controller as supported on macOS 12 or later. That does not guarantee that every Steam game supports the controller, nor does it guarantee identical support for every Joy-Con arrangement.
Steam Input can remap buttons, but it cannot force every game to display Nintendo-style button glyphs. Many Mac games show Xbox-style A/B/X/Y prompts even when the physical controller has Nintendo’s different button arrangement. That is usually a display or layout issue, not a pairing failure.

- WIRELESS CONNECTIVITY: Get the freedom to game anywhere with a 30-foot wireless range, and without the hassle of wires.
- RECHARGEABLE BATTERY: Save money and never need to buy, or waste, batteries again.
- UP TO 40 HOURS OF BATTERY LIFE: Enjoy longer game play before needing to recharge.
- PRISMATIC LED LIGHTING: Customize the look of your controller to match your mood with the full color range and four lighting modes.
- MOTION-CONTROLS: Enhance your gaming experience to play the way the developer intended.
Steam Input also cannot give a genuinely keyboard-only game the same behavior as a native gamepad. It can translate buttons into keyboard or mouse commands, but analog movement, simultaneous inputs, camera control, and triggers may feel limited.
Use the Pro Controller or Joy-Cons with native Mac games and Apple Games
For a native Mac game or an Apple Games title, start with the game’s own controller settings:
- Connect the controller before launching the game.
- Open the game’s settings or controls menu.
- Enable gamepad or controller input if there is a separate toggle.
- Assign buttons if the game provides a mapping screen.
- Quit and relaunch the game if it was open during pairing.
The game must support controllers independently of macOS. A controller that appears under Game Controllers may still be ignored by a title that accepts only keyboard and mouse input, expects another input standard, or has incomplete Mac support.
For conventional games requiring two analog sticks, a full D-pad, and a standard trigger layout, the Pro Controller is generally a better fit than one Joy-Con. Use Joy-Cons when the particular game supports their arrangement or when their detached form factor is important.
Use the controller with emulators
Emulators often have their own input systems. Configure the controller inside the emulator rather than assuming that a mapping made in macOS or Steam will automatically apply.

A controller may work in Steam but require a separate mapping in an emulator. Conversely, an emulator may recognize an input that a commercial game does not.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Bluetooth versus USB
| Connection | Advantages | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|
| Bluetooth | No cable; convenient for the Pro Controller and individual Joy-Cons | Can suffer from interference, reconnect issues, separate Joy-Con devices, or inconsistent game mappings |
| USB | Useful for troubleshooting and avoids some Bluetooth problems | Requires a data cable and possibly an adapter; game and controller support can still vary |
If Bluetooth is unreliable, reduce competing wireless devices, move the Switch away temporarily, forget the controller in Bluetooth, and pair it again. Apple notes that the practical number of connected controllers depends on the device, setup, and wireless environment; there is no single Mac-wide maximum to rely on.
Fix common problems
| Symptom | What to try |
|---|---|
| The controller never appears | Hold SYNC again, charge it, reduce Bluetooth interference, and check that another device is not actively reconnecting to it. |
| It appears but will not connect | Use Bluetooth’s forget/remove option, then put the controller back into discovery mode and pair it again. |
| macOS sees it but the game does not | Enable the game’s controller support, check its input settings, relaunch it, and inspect Steam Input if using Steam. |
| Only one Joy-Con works | Pair the second Joy-Con separately; do not expect the first pairing to add both devices automatically. |
| Two Joy-Cons do not act as one gamepad | Use a Pro Controller or a game/application with compatible Joy-Con handling. Buddy Controller is not a universal Joy-Con merger. |
| Wrong buttons are displayed | Check the Steam or in-game layout. The game may continue to show Xbox-style prompts even when the controller is working. |
| USB connection fails | Try a known data cable, another port, or an adapter. A charging-only cable will not provide a wired controller connection. |
| The controller reconnects to the Switch | Turn off or move the Switch away temporarily and pair while it is not trying to use the controller. |
| Some inputs are missing | Test the controller in Game Controllers, check battery level, relaunch the game, disable conflicting mapper utilities, and verify that you are not using a Switch 2 controller with original-model instructions. |
If the controller works in macOS but not in one game, test another compatible game. This distinguishes a system-wide Bluetooth problem from a title-specific limitation. Also disconnect other controllers and mapping utilities while testing, since competing input layers can cause duplicate or missing inputs.
Do not confuse original Switch controllers with Switch 2 controllers
The original Switch Pro Controller and original Joy-Cons are the models covered by the normal Bluetooth instructions above. Switch 2 Pro Controller 2 and Joy-Con 2 should be treated separately. Apple’s current Mac documentation does not explicitly promise compatibility with those newer controllers.
A third-party App Store listing claims support for original and newer Switch controllers, including USB-connected configurations. That may be useful evidence when investigating a particular setup, but it is not an official Apple or Nintendo Mac driver and should not be treated as a universal compatibility guarantee.
Should you install a third-party mapper?
Usually, start without one:
- Steam game: Try Steam Input first.
- Native Mac game: Use the game’s built-in controller configuration.
- Emulator: Configure the controller in the emulator.
- Keyboard-only game: Consider a reputable Mac-compatible mapper, accepting that analog and simultaneous-input behavior may be imperfect.
Do not install BetterJoy as the normal Mac solution. The project’s documented setup is Windows-oriented, using Windows executables and ViGEmBus driver tooling. It is not a native macOS installation path.
Third-party utilities may also require macOS input or accessibility permissions. Grant those permissions only to software you trust, and remove competing mappers while diagnosing a connection.
Best setup for each use case
- Pro Controller with Steam: Pair it, verify it in Game Controllers, enable Steam Input if needed, select a Controller Layout, and relaunch the game.
- Pro Controller with a native Mac game: Pair it, check Game Controllers, then enable and configure controller support inside the game.
- One Joy-Con: Pair it individually and expect limited or unusual input.
- Two Joy-Cons: Pair both independently, then confirm whether the game supports two devices as intended. Do not assume they become one standard gamepad.
- No native controller support: Try Steam Input where applicable or a Mac-compatible mapper, understanding the limitations of keyboard/mouse translation.
- Switch 2 controller: Stop and verify support for that exact model instead of applying original Switch instructions automatically.
For most Mac gaming, the original Pro Controller is the least complicated choice. Joy-Cons are useful when you already own them or specifically need separate small controllers, but their independent pairing and nonstandard layouts make them a less predictable general-purpose option.
