Yes—you can use the original Nintendo Switch Pro Controller with an iPhone or iPad over Bluetooth. Your device must run iOS 16 or later or iPadOS 16 or later, and the game or app must support external controllers. Pairing the controller with iOS or iPadOS does not guarantee that every game, button, or feature will work.

What you need

  • An iPhone running iOS 16 or later, or an iPad running iPadOS 16 or later.
  • A charged Nintendo Switch Pro Controller.
  • Bluetooth enabled on the Apple device.
  • A game or app with controller support.

Update to the newest iOS or iPadOS version available for your device rather than deliberately staying on the minimum version. The controller does not need to remain paired with a Nintendo Switch while you connect it to an iPhone or iPad.

How to pair the Switch Pro Controller with an iPhone or iPad

  1. Wake the controller. Press a button. If nothing happens, charge it first. Nintendo says a full charge takes approximately six hours; see its power and charging guidance.
  2. Put the controller into pairing mode. Hold the small SYNC button on the controller’s top edge for at least one second. The four player LEDs should begin cycling.
  3. On the iPhone or iPad, open Settings > Bluetooth and turn Bluetooth on.
  4. Wait for the controller to appear under Other Devices. It may be listed as Pro Controller, Nintendo Switch Pro Controller, or a similar name.
  5. Tap the controller’s name.
  6. After pairing, it should move to My Devices and show as connected.

These steps combine Apple’s Bluetooth controller instructions with Nintendo’s Pro Controller pairing procedure.

How to confirm that it works

Pairing at the Bluetooth level is only the first test. Open a game that supports controllers and try the analog sticks, face buttons, shoulder buttons, and triggers. If the controller works in one game but not another, the Bluetooth connection is probably fine; the difference is usually the app’s controller implementation.

Look for a controller icon on an App Store game page. Apple says this icon can indicate controller support. You can also check the game’s settings for an input or controller section. Controller support can differ between native App Store games, Apple Arcade titles, remote-play apps, Steam Link, Moonlight, Xbox Cloud Gaming, GeForce NOW, and other streaming services.

A streaming app may accept the Pro Controller even when the streamed game does not expose every feature. Conversely, an app may recognize the controller but support only some buttons.

The Nintendo button layout can be confusing

The Pro Controller’s physical face-button layout is:

  • A on the right
  • B on the bottom
  • X on the top
  • Y on the left

Many mobile games use Xbox-style prompts or assume an Xbox-style interpretation of those positions. As a result, an on-screen A prompt may not correspond to the button printed A on your Nintendo controller. This can look like a connection problem even when the controller is working correctly.

Check the game’s control settings and use its remapping options if available. Apple provides controller customization at Settings > General > Game Controller for a growing number of compatible controllers and software configurations, but that screen will not necessarily offer every option for every Switch Pro Controller or iOS/iPadOS release. Apple’s controller support page explains the available options.

Which Pro Controller features may not work?

Apple warns that button and feature support varies by controller and app. Do not assume that every function available on a Nintendo Switch will be available on an iPhone or iPad.

  • Vibration: Depends on the game and its controller implementation. HD rumble should not be expected.
  • Motion controls: Gyro or motion input may not be exposed to the app.
  • Home and Capture buttons: They may not perform useful iPhone or iPad actions.
  • Player LEDs: Their behavior outside a Switch console may be limited or inconsistent.
  • NFC and Amiibo: These are not normal iPhone or iPad game-input features.
  • Audio: Controller audio-jack support varies by controller and app.

The controller also does not provide access to Nintendo Switch games or turn an iPhone or iPad into a Switch. It is simply acting as a Bluetooth input device for compatible Apple software.

Troubleshooting

The controller does not appear in Bluetooth

  1. Charge the controller and press a button to wake it.
  2. Turn off the nearby Nintendo Switch, Mac, PC, or other device that may reclaim the controller.
  3. Hold the SYNC button again until the player LEDs cycle.
  4. Toggle Bluetooth off and on in Settings > Bluetooth.
  5. Restart the iPhone or iPad.
  6. Move closer to the Apple device and reduce nearby Bluetooth activity.
  7. Install the latest available Apple software and update the controller firmware if possible.

To update the official controller through a Switch, use System Settings > Controllers and Sensors > Update Controllers. Nintendo documents this process in its controller-update guidance.

It appears but will not connect

Put the controller back into pairing mode and select it again. Make sure it is not connected to the Switch or another phone. If it was previously saved by the Apple device, open Settings > Bluetooth, tap the information button beside the controller, choose Forget This Device, and pair it again.

Restart both devices if necessary. Pressing the SYNC button and then another controller button can also wake the controller before you retry the connection. Apple recommends updating both devices, forgetting the controller, pairing again, and reducing Bluetooth congestion.

It connects, but the game does nothing

This usually points to an app-support issue rather than a Bluetooth issue. Test the controller in another known controller-compatible game, check the original game’s App Store listing for the controller icon, and inspect its input settings. Update the game and reconnect the controller after launching it. If the controller works elsewhere, contact the game developer rather than repeatedly pairing the controller.

Only some buttons or features work

Partial support is possible. A game may accept the sticks and face buttons but ignore vibration, motion input, Home, Capture, or other controls. This is normal when the app does not implement those inputs.

It works in one app but not another

Apps implement controller support independently. Record the app name, iOS or iPadOS version, controller firmware version, and the specific controls that fail before contacting the developer.

Can you use it with a USB cable?

Wireless Bluetooth pairing is the normal method to try with the Nintendo Switch Pro Controller. A USB-C or USB-A cable may charge it, but charging does not guarantee wired controller input on an iPhone or iPad.

Apple supports compatible wired controllers in some setups, and an iPad may require a USB-C adapter or hub depending on its port and cable. Older iPhones may need a Lightning-to-USB adapter. However, do not assume that the official Nintendo Pro Controller will work as a wired controller in every configuration. If wired play is essential, use a controller whose manufacturer explicitly advertises iPhone or iPad compatibility.

Is the Pro Controller a good choice for iPhone and iPad?

It makes sense if you already own one, prefer its larger grips, mainly play on Switch, and occasionally use Apple Arcade, cloud gaming, or compatible mobile games. It is less convenient if you need guaranteed support across every game, dependable vibration or gyro controls, a phone-mounted design, or frequent switching among several devices.

For broader Apple documentation, consider an Xbox Wireless Controller or PlayStation DualSense/DualShock 4. Apple maintains dedicated guidance for supported Xbox controllers and PlayStation controllers. A Backbone One is more suitable for iPhone users who want a controller that physically surrounds the phone, while 8BitDo offers compact and multipurpose options—but compatibility depends on the exact model, mode, and firmware. See the manufacturers’ sites for Backbone and 8BitDo.

Important model distinction

This guide concerns the original Nintendo Switch Pro Controller. Do not automatically apply the same result to the Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller or to third-party “Switch-style” controllers. Those are separate products and may use different pairing procedures, firmware, or compatibility rules.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use the Switch Pro Controller with Apple Arcade?

Yes, when the individual Apple Arcade game supports external controllers. Pairing the controller with the iPhone or iPad does not make every Apple Arcade game controller-compatible.

Can I connect it without a Nintendo Switch?

Yes. Put the Pro Controller into pairing mode with its SYNC button, then select it under Settings > Bluetooth on the iPhone or iPad.

Why are the A and B buttons reversed?

The Pro Controller uses Nintendo’s physical layout, while many games display Xbox-style prompts. Check the game’s control settings or remap the controls if the game allows it.

Can I use two controllers with an iPad?

Multiple-controller support depends on the iPadOS version, the controllers, and the game. The game must be designed to accept multiple players and multiple controllers.

Does the Home button control the iPhone?

Do not expect it to perform a standard iPhone or iPad system action. Home, Capture, LEDs, vibration, motion controls, and other features vary by app and controller support.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I use it with Steam Link or cloud gaming?

Often, if the streaming app accepts Bluetooth controllers, but support still depends on the app and the streamed game. Test the specific service and title.
